If nothing else, the Tampa Bay Lightning's front office appears to be learning from their rookie mistakes of last summer. Unfortunately, the Phoenix Coyotes have reached their quota for assuming other teams' bad contracts after taking Radim Vrbata(notes) from the Bolts, so Tampa announced it's going to have to buy out the remaining three years of Vaclav Prospal's(notes) contract.

Prospal's deal last summer is never included with the Lightning's other head-scratchers, but four years and $14 million should qualify. Not for the cap hit, which was a reasonable $3.5 million, but for the four-year commitment to a journeyman enigma who was actually on his third tour of duty with the Lightning.

Of course, his status as one of the "Big Three" with Marty St. Louis and Vincent Lecavalier(notes) earned him trust and loyalty. But Marty had 80 points last season, Vinny had 67 in an injury-riddled year and Prospal managed just 45 and was a minus-20.

Damien Cristodero of Lightning Strikes explains the near future of Prospal, who has to decide if he'd like to be placed on waivers:

If he does not want to be put on waivers, the buyout immediately takes effect and the player is an unrestricted free agent, free to sign with any team. If he prefers to go on waivers, another team can claim him at the full value of his salary. If he is not claimed, the buyout takes place and the player is free to sign with any team. Prospal, a good friend of captain Vinny Lecavalier, had just bought a new home in the Tampa Bay area.

Ouch. Maybe the Buccaneers are hiring. Bottom line is that an available Prospal moves to the head of the class for remaining free-agent centers, and he can obviously play the wing too. His price and contract duration will have to come down, but he could be an asset for a team that needs some secondary scoring.

At least until he's traded back to the Lightning for Round 4.

If the buyout goes through, then Tampa will have "a salary cap hit of $1.167 for the next six seasons," according to Erik Erlendsson of Bolts Report. This decision hasn't really been speculated upon publically during the summer, so the sense is that there may be another skate to drop after buying out Prospal's contract. Tampa has been sniffing around Alex Tanguay(notes) the last few weeks, and that would be an upgrade over Prospal.

Of course, true to form, the Bolts could just use the savings to sign four or five more defensemen.

With the 3m they picked up from the Vrbata trade and now with another 3m on thr Prospal buyout, it looks to me like Alex Tanguay will fit nicely.

Isn't this slated to be his bounce back year, every second year he does really well. They would be better off buying him out next year!

If the price is right, I'd expect the Flyers to make an offer. Vinny had great Chemistry with Danny Briere enroute to the '08 Conference finals.
If they could get him for 1-1.5 million after the rumored Randy Jones trade goes through, I think he'll work out well for his THIRD STINT in the orange and black.

Now that Vrbata and Prospal are gone, do we have enough money to sign both Sykora and Tanguay?

How this shakes out. Prospl ends up an Islander for a 1year contract at a lower cap number then gets traded at the dead line back to TB for a picks which we all know Garth loves. Or substitute TO for NYI as burke already bailed out TB last year with the Kolzig trade.

The Wild need a second line center. These numbers aren't great though, but at least he's got experience. Still if he's coming to Minnesota, I hope it's not because he's claimed at his current salary. Hopefully they can get him under $3M if he ends up a UFA.

I guess compared to Comrie, these numbers are very good, still I don't think anyone should take this contract on Waivers, The Wild would love to get 50 points out of a second liner.

Man I wish I could get a buy out like that...loved the comment about 4-5 more d-men. I'm available if their interested although I haven't played D in nearly 20 years so I'll fit right in...of course they may as well just put me on long term IR right away...but hey think of the cap space it would free up. My agent (read wife) is availble for all offers.
He's still useful but he must be ticked at the timing of the decision. Most teams are pretty much done for the summer so his suitors may be limited.

I'm baffled by this. Just by virtue of trying to limit the buyout cap hit, they should have stuck with him for another season at least.

I was under the impression that the "big three" in Tampa always referred to vinny, st. louis, and brad richards. I have never heard prospal being thrown around as one of the "big three". Correct me if I'm wrong... Or is this a whole new big three created in the post-richards era?

Uncle Fester signed him. The bolts won their only Cup without Prospal. Why? Because he's inconsistent in clutch time and a defensive liability. Ditching Stillman for Prospal and giving Brad Richards the big money over Khabibulin cost this team dearly.

Another reason why the Bolts are stupid. I was going to make the point that he's good every other year, but blubby already laid it out. They should have waited till the trade deadline next year and moved him then. Next year, its 80 points in the bag for Vinny.

NHL teams can only have a maximum roster of 23 players. Before they bought out Prospel, TB had 24 players signed. They obviously needed to get rid of somebody. But they probably should have waited for training camp to see who should be on the roster.

@5, check out www.hockeybuzz.com/cap-central/ it lists all the teams Players salaries vs. the Cap. It's up to date within a few days, take out Prospal and TB has a fair amount of $$$ to spend. Looks like at present Chicago is $5M over the Cap, they're going to have to do some shuffling quickly, not to mention what they're going to have to do after this season. They've picked up a good team, but really wonder about the GM's in the Windy City. Of course I wondered about Tampa prior to last season and those clowns got this team into hot water this past year and carrying forward, but who knows maybe they'll bounce back. They do have some good talent there.

2 weeks into the season... that's how long it'll take Tampa to realize that without him, they still suck, so might as well keep him to have a guy who can (sort of) play hockey

Spock, the next to last sentence by Books is a direct reference to Prospal. The paragraph before that is the 'joke' about playing for T.B. It wasn't well-worded, but there was a 'subject' change, not a homosexual marriage (not that I care....).
