Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Puck Previews: Spotlighting the key games in NHL action, news and views as well as general frivolity. Make sure to stop back here for the nightly Three Stars when the games are finished.

Preview: San Jose Sharks at Detroit Red Wings, 7:30 p.m. EST.

A slow start has turned into the Red Wings grabbing a point in each of their last eight games and putting up a 5-1-3 record in that span. Defenseman Brian Rafalski(notes) is expected to return after battling swine flu while Jonathan Ericsson(notes) is still questionable. San Jose, winners of six in a row and the NHL's highest scoring team, will have to best Chris Osgood(notes) who's won his last two starts and stopped 49 of 50 shots.

Preview: Chicago Blackhawks at Phoenix Coyotes, 9 p.m. EST.

‘Hawks captain Jonathan Toews(notes) will miss his fifth game in a row after a concussion at the hands of Vancouver's Willie Mitchell(notes). With their dads in tow, the Blackhawks will be looking for their seventh straight win over the Coyotes and to pad the attendance numbers at Jobing.com Arena.

Preview: New York Rangers at Edmonton Oilers, 9:30 p.m. EST.

Oilers assistant coach Tom Renney on facing his former team: "It's not quite the same unit, but I'm going to have a hard time looking at the logo and not identifying with it. I'm going to see faces, familiar faces, and be happy to see them again and all that kind of stuff. And I want to beat them."

Check out the Y! Sports scores and schedule page for previews of the other seven games tonight.

Evening Reading

-Bob Hartley has told RDS that Peter Forsberg(notes) has agreed with Ak Bars Kazan of the KHL. That's a quick turnaround after what Ak Bars Kazan VP Ravil Shavaleev said about Russian reports yesterday that Forsberg was signed: “I read that we have supposedly agreed with Forsberg. However, we have conducted no negotiations with him, and I’ll tell you more: We haven’t even thought about inviting him.” [Slap Shots]

-Whoa. "The Columbus Blue Jackets could leave central Ohio if the team can't fix an economic model that is causing losses of $12 million a year, according to a report issued today by the Columbus Chamber. But a deal to keep the hockey team here and the Arena District alive -- the team and the district generated $30 million in taxes last year -- probably will include asking for public dollars, and soon." [Dispatch]

-David Krejci(notes) is the latest player to be affected by swine flu. And thus another member of my fantasy team, "The Best Bellows!" finds themself out of action.[Boston Globe]

-Not long after calling out Nashville Predators fans for low attendance numbers, Denver Post columnist calls out his constituency about their failure to fill the Pepsi Center last night against Phoenix. [All Things Avs]

-Will Wayne Gretzky make an appearance in Toronto this weekend during the Hall of Fame inductions? [Globe & Mail]

Puck Buddy Comment of the Day: From Tom who is being sarcastic or has questionable taste in hockey jersey designs:

"The Oilers "Spawn" jersey is hands down the best third jersey ever created!!!!"

Bold Prediction: Phoenix will break 7,500 in attendance tonight, but lose to Chicago.

Sharks without Blake, Setoguchi, Pavelski, Vesce tonight. Add in the fact that Nabokov is allergic to the Red Wings and it's the second game of a back to back and this could get ugly.

speaking of columbus going under....aren't almost all sports teams basically tax-break/bond fueled, unprofitable advertisements for cities. i remember reading about all the free money the football teams get from cities to keep running and it's questionable at best. really seems like it could be spent on education....of course, then you'd have people smart enough to realize they're wasting their money supporting a sports team they don't need.

why is bob hartley, ex-coach of Forsberg, breaking the news that he has signed with the Russian team? isn't that a little strange, or is he a journalist now?

Wow. It seems like I haven't been able to say this in over a year, but Montreal would be getting killed in that second period if not for the amazing play of Carey Price.
Feels like 2007/2008 all over again. Hopefully he keeps it up.

Apparently Vancouver is aggressively pursuing Forsberg. Just what we need, another soon-to-be-injured forward.

Jacques Martin new defensive system really working well tonight.. Boston only has 40 shots headed to OT....Without their top two centers in Savard and Krejci too!! Hold the fort, Carey. Here they come again.

That's a game you hate to see either goalie lose. Both made amazing, acrobatic saves to keep their teams in it. Glad Carey got a real statement win. He deserved it. The rest of the team - not so much. Still, good to see the youngsters like Carle and Pyatt and White have good, solid games. Andrei Kostitsyn, other than a few defensive gaffes, had a strong, solid game. The GGC top line had it's moments, but wasn't enough of a factor - mostly due to Thomas.
Great win for Price, and Thomas has zero to be ashamed of. That behind-the-back stick save he made on Gionta was SICK.

    Re : Forsberg
The Vancouver Canucks have sent six members of their staff/scouting department overseas to assess Peter and talk with his agent. Mike Gillis has confirmed that the Canucks are interested in acquiring his services. Glen Sather is also on record indicating the same.
Hmmm....the Canucks and Rangers fighting for the services of a former NHL star and Swedish icon who is past his due date...
Haven't we seen this movie before?

@ HotStacey : I think in Howe's day it was more the norm. The crazy curves came along in the 1960's with Bobby Hull and Bernie "Boom Boom" Geofferion. Gretzky was primarily a playmaker (more carrer assists than anyone has points). Wayne was first guy to do "saucer" passes on a regular basis and the straight stick allowed him to do them in either direction. I think Crosby actually opted for a straight stick in order to follow Gretzky. Some of Crosby's best goals have been backhands (his goal against NYR was sick)

hey, thanks for the response. yeah, i was wondering if there was a connection between having an almost straight stick and being the best player in the game. i really don't have a particular theory i just thought it was a strange coincidence. yeah, that backhand changed my life. what a highlight. i thought a cross-ice backhand dish pass he gave to gonchar last year for a goal was one of the best i've ever seen as well. i love the accuracy of a straight stick but i'm just not used to the puck control anymore as i've been using a datsyuk curve for too long. it just feels like i can only go side to side and no chance for toe drag. hmmm......interesting stuff anyway.
on an aside: what's the deal with teams playing for OT now 4/6 games have finished tonight in OT. teams are just playing to ensure their point because the cap has made he league so competitive and instead of going for a win they go for a point. since a SO isn't a real win why not give zero points for a loser so they HAVE to go for a win....the whole game. why would the league not notice this? too many ties. a SO win is not a real hockey win and i think people probably have forgotten this by now.

Does anybody still care about Brett Favre I mean Peter Forsberg? If he had anything left he'd already be playing in the NHL, he's made of glass.
