Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Puck Previews: Spotlighting the key games in NHL action, news and views as well as general frivolity. Make sure to stop back here for the nightly Three Stars when the games are finished.

Preview: Dallas Stars at Detroit Red Wings, 7:30 p.m. EST. Jimmy Howard(notes) gets the start for the Wings, as Chris Osgood(notes) wants you to know that he did not, repeat did not, have the flu. But the big goaltending news is that Marty Turco(notes) is sitting in favor of Alex Auld for Dallas ... OK, not exactly big news, considering Turco hasn't exactly played his best hockey in Detroit historically. The Wings don't have a regulation loss at the Joe (7-0-1) and are looking for their fifth win in a row.

Preview: Phoenix Coyotes at Minnesota Wild, 8 p.m. EST. The Coyotes are trying to snap a seven-game road losing streak against Minnesota. The Wild, meanwhile, are trying to preserve their sellout streak by any means necessary, according to Michael Russo. Watch The Game Live Via Hockey Night on Y!

Preview: Philadelphia Flyers at Los Angeles Kings, 10:30 p.m. EST. All eyes on Alex Frolov tonight, as we mentioned earlier. Broad Street Hockey has everything you need to know about this long distance rivalry. Watch The Game Live Via Hockey Night on Y!

Check out the Y! Sports scores and schedule page for previews of the other three games tonight.

Evening Reading

Sidney Crosby(notes) runs the Olympic torch. [Metro Canada]

• The St. Louis Blues allow fans to narc on rowdy people in their section via text messaging. [Blues]

• Check out former New York Rangers winger Darren Turcotte on Blueshirt Radio this evening. [Blueshirt Banter]

• Good back and forth on the Anaheim Ducks' top line, and whether they're being asked to do too much. [Anaheim Calling]

• It's early in the process, but Theo Fleury(notes) says he wants to pursue charges against Graham James. [Sportsnet]

• Why wasn't Cam Ward(notes) already on long-term injured reserve? [Canes Country]

Puck Buddy Comment of the Day: On the Barry Trotz vs. the arena clock story, here's GT --

"Trotz should know by now that everything moves slower in the south. This ain't fancy like and fast paced Manitoba down in these here parts!"

Bold Prediction: Feelin' a Nathan Horton(notes) goal against Buffalo.

I don't see how playing all the west coast games at 3:00 in the afternoon pacific time would be that big of a problem. Don't these people know some of are actually up and out by 6 am in the morning. I am never gonna make this game tonight.

I'm thinking that this article about a Brazilian's short skirt was definitely more interesting than Cindy running with the torch (from the same website).

Watching the intermission program on NHL is like watching paint dry. The set must be a hand me down from sportcenter circa 1985 and the hosts are as stale as week old bread.

So can Crosby now officially be called a flamer? Flyers 3-2 in OT tonight vs. LA. But tomorrow is the game that matters, gotta beat the Sharks.

LOL at the Flyers/Kings piece and its comments. One comment suggests Randy Jones' comment ran him out of Philly. That's particularly funny because the Flyers now pay HALF his salary, as he plays for the Kings! Thanks, Philly!

Talk to the hand. The Kings helplessly watched a goal scored on them last game where the forward first launched the goaltender's stick into the corner, then waited for a pass and scored on the stickless goaltender. That TIED the game. Fortunately, the Kings won it in the shootout, but Florida did not earn the point they got.

i saw that goal by may.
yes, there's intent to blow the whistle, but the shot went in cleanly...it wasn't loose in the crease or trickling in...so the referee must have had his intent to blow the whistle before the shot was even taken...
in this case, it is impossible for the referee to have intended to blow the whistle before the puck was in the net. let's hope some video gets thrown up here for all to see.

I like how Richards gets punched in the face after the whistle and the Kings get a 5 on 3, awesome.

Watch @ 2:18 there was no intent. The ruling on the ice made no mention of intent. I can't justify how toronto wasnt able to overturn this and make it a goal. It is the worst no goal i have ever seen.
I settle down to watch a hockey game. The refs make a bunch of chincy little useless penalty calls (both ways) so i'm already on edge. Then i see this no goal. It's making a mockery of this great game, and the purpose of having video review in the first place.

If a crystal clear goal can be called off by the referee...
why does the Toronto 'war room' even exist?
In other words, exactly what IS the role of the 'war room'...
to give some guys (with no real authority) a job, while they watch the game(s) on monitors?
To give any referee the 'power of intent' is paving the way for serious issues of mis-trust.
    This is not the 1950's... We have T E C H N O L O G Y now to help insure that the right call is made.
Why is the NHL refusing to use it?

the refs got the call wrong horribly, but with or without the goal, the stars were the better team tonight. the wings certainly did not play well enough to get the win. that doesn't mean puck daddy shouldn't dog the blockheads who blatantly failed at their jobs.

@eric, i believe mickey made a point in the post-game somewhere along the lines of toronto wanting to call it a goal but leaving it to the referee's judgment of whether or not he was intending to blow the whistle. the ref made the call, but i think anyone looking at the replay can see that it was an obvious goal and they should have just stated that clearly to the ref.

It was a goal the replay proved that. Intent to call is the biggest joke since "pulling out".
