Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Puck Previews: Spotlighting the key games in NHL action, news and views as well as general frivolity. Make sure to stop back here for the nightly Three Stars when the games are finished.

Preview: Pittsburgh Penguins at Anaheim Ducks, 10 p.m. EST. Former Mighty Duck of Anaheim Dan Bylsma and former Anaheim Duck Chris Kunitz(notes) go back to Cali as Stanley Cup champions. Good news for Anaheim? Pittsburgh is 1-11-3 with a tie since Jan. 16, 1999 in the Golden State, via the AP. The bad news? The Ducks are on a 1-4-1 skid. Rules the Sports Judge: "This is a fragile and confused team right now, trying to steer themselves out of a wet paper bag." Watch The Game Live Via Hockey Night on Y!

Preview: Boston Bruins at Detroit Red Wings, 7 p.m. EST. Your Versus game of the night. The Wings are starting to turn the corner a little bit, even as they lose Brian Rafalski(notes) and Jonathan Ericsson(notes) tonight with flu-like symptoms. Hub Hockey wonders if the Bruins pattern of .500 hockey will continue. James Murphy is live-bloggin' it on NESN.com, if that's what you're into.

• Check out the Y! Sports scores and schedule page for previews of the other three games tonight.

Evening Reading

James Wisniewski(notes)? Not a happy scrappy puppy about this two-game suspension: "I made a hockey play. There's a lot of opinions out there that say that's a clean hit. And then to hear all four referees tell me it was a clean hit. They had a pretty good view of it too." [Ducks Blog]

• Last week, we linked to a story about a Swedish team getting in trouble for "hopping the line" for H1N1 vaccine. Clearly, the Calgary Flames did not read that story. [AP]

Wait ...Phiiiiil? Phil Kessel(notes)? Thought that was you! It's Ned... Ned Ryerson! "Needlenose Ned"? "Ned the Head"? C'mon, buddy! (This has nothing to do with the Pension Plan Puppets post on the Leafs tonight. We have Bill Murray on the brain for some reason.) [PPP]

• The D.C. City Council passed a resolution that declared that November 3, 2009, is "Washington Capitals Day" in the District. Now, how are they going to fit an entire council table on the bandwagon? [Capitals]

Michael Del Zotto(notes) of the New York Rangers is your rookie of the month. [CP]

• After some accusations from Bruce Boudreau, Columbus Blue Jackets Coach Ken Hitchcock confirms that (gasp!) his team was looking to hit Alex Ovechkin(notes) early and often: "That's the name of the game. Why, is that against the rules now?" [Puck-rakers]

• Stan Fischler would like you to rank goalie masks. [MSG]

• John Grigg's story on the Philadelphia Flyers' happy cap accident via injuries is a good read. [THN]

• Guy Lafleur will speak about his new criminal record on a DVD. Hope there are bloopers. We love'em. [CBC Sports]

Carey Price(notes) wins the Cup. No, not that one. [Canadiens]

Puck Buddy Comment of the Day: From Mike in the comments on the top teams of the 2000s post, this could be a comment of the year contender --

"It would be more interesting to know the top 10 'worst' teams to win a Cup in the last decade."

Think about it.

Bold Prediction: Another shootout for the Canadiens, but a win for the Thrashers.

"It would be more interesting to know the top 10 'worst' teams to win a Cup in the last decade."
Something is telling me that it would be the same list as the 10 "best" teams to win a Cup in the last decade?

How about the top 10 teams that did not live up to their potential. (09 Sharks, 07 Sabres, 03 and 06 Senators all for example)

Phil, you changed! Classic BHC reference, just classic. Okay I take back all the things I said about Gagne and Briere as long as they remain injured long-term:) LMAO at puck buddy mike's comment of the day.

No #3 VS. isn't showing a late game tonight. Wish I had Center Ice so I could catch Ducks/Pens.

I"m watching the Wings/Bruins snoozefest. Gotta check my calendar. Because I swear the Way-Back Machine has transported me to 2003.
I mean, we missed a year of hockey for THIS?
If this was the first game I'd ever watched, i'd never watch another hockey game the rest of my life.

Love the Beverly Hills Cop reference on the Kessel article. I had read someplace once that Eddie had ad-libbed that whole part of the scene because he only saw the Phil Collins look-alike actor minutes before shooting and decided to run with it when the camera rolled.

MISSING: Boston Bruins Offense. Last seen Saturday afternoon (10/31) at around 3 PM, on Causeway Street in Boston, MA. May have been kidnapped while trick-or-treating. If found, please return to TD Bank Garden by 7 PM Thursday (at the latest). NOTE: Avidly avoids power-play. Do not search there.

Now that I read the rest of the lines it is a groundhog day reference, my bad. However BHC was much funnier. And I was also incorrect it isn't bull riding it is cage fighting.

On the plus side, higgins got his first goal. On the minus side, the rangers have to stop giving wins away to garbage franchises.

btw, did anyone see Crosby playing goal at the end of the Ducks game? Wow talk about doing it all at both ends of the ice! I'd like to see Ovechkin do that!

@ 15 : You are aware that the NYR have pretty much been the punchline to every hockey joke since the arrival of Sather, right? Well, jokes that do not involve the Leafs that is. Should have been 5-0 for the Canucks, with 6 starters injured. If that's garbage, what would the Rangers be exactly?

The comment's even dumber when you take the lockout into account.
