Puck Daddy - NHL

NHL season previews often sell you an impressive bill of goods before you realize, at the end of the season, you're holding an empty box. Which makes using advertisements and infomercials the appropriate template for Puck Daddy's 2009-10 NHL Season Previews, presented each day throughout September.

Last Season's Ad Copy: Sixth in the Eastern Conference and second in the Southeast Division (45-30-7, 97 points). Defeated the New Jersey Devils, 4-3, in the conference quarterfinals and the Boston Bruins, 4-3, in the conference semifinals. Swept by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the conference finals, which still wasn't good enough to get them on Versus this season.

It didn't appear the Carolina Hurricanes were headed for that level of success through their first 25 games, as Peter Laviolette was fired after going 12-11-2. Paul Maurice was hired for his second tour of duty with the team and Carolina won at a .623 clip under his coaching.

The primary benefactor of the change behind the bench was goalie Cam Ward(notes), who finally answered the question, "Hey, whatever happened to Cam Ward?" He played himself into the Vezina race with a renewed defensive responsibility in front of him by teammates, sharp mechanics and a bizonkers (tm Gary Bettman) work ethic that saw him end the season with 28 straight starts.

It was also a season that saw career years from players like Chad LaRose(notes) (19 goals) and Tuomo Ruutu(notes) (26 goals, 54 points) overcome a small decline in production from Eric Staal(notes) and an outright stinker from Rod Brind'Amour(notes) (that infamous minus-23).

The Hurricanes showed the Bruins and Devils last postseason they're a team that's taken lightly at your own peril; heck, we haven't seen Marty Brodeur that upset since that time they forgot the extra mayo on his bacon at Denny's. So while there are creeping doubts about capturing lightning in a bottle for a second straight season, can anyone say for certain that the Hurricanes aren't a contender?

Latest Gadgets (Offseason Additions): Most of the praise this summer went to the pimp hand of Canes GM Jim Rutherford, which was stronger than granite. He waited out both LaRose and Erik Cole(notes), getting them back into the fold for lower than their respective asking prices earlier in the free-agent frenzy.

Beyond the re-signings, Rutherford made some intriguing, if not blockbuster, additions. On defense, former Flyer Andrew Alberts(notes) is a bruiser; and former Bruin Aaron Ward(notes), on his second tour with Carolina after being traded by Boston, averaged over 19 minutes a game. He's a solid veteran and a good team guy ... assuming he doesn't feel like a sucker anymore.

The pickup that had the most buzz: Tom Kostopolous, formerly of the Montreal Canadiens. Another gritty guy on a team full of them, and a 30-year-old that could have more offensive upside than his career highs of 22 points.

With regard to center Stephane Yelle(notes), a Carolina signing Adam Proteau of The Hockey News heavily praised, it feels like he should be on his 18th NHL team when it's actually his fourth.

To The Recycle Bin (Offseason Subtractions): Patrick Eaves(notes) was traded for Ward, bought out by the Bruins and then signed with the Detroit Red Wings. Talk about stumbling upward. Also getting a buy out: Defenseman Frantisek Kaberle(notes).

Defenseman Dennis Seidenberg(notes) wasn't re-signed but is practicing with the team. Power-play cannon Anton Babchuk(notes) is a restricted free agent who recently fired his agent and who the Canes are attempting to trade.

The Pitchman (Top Offensive Player): Apologies to Ray "The Wizard" Whitney's outstanding season (24 goals, 77 points), but Eric Staal remains the star here. His 40 goals were a career second-best, even as his points dropped by six from the previous season. He averages 2.32 points per 60 minutes, best on the team. In the postseason, Staal was on a Conn Smythe pace (9 goals in 14 games) before he and the Canes ran into Pittsburgh.

He makes his teammates better, as Ruutu can attest. Getting Erik Cole back obviously made a difference for Staal, too. He's in a comfort zone and entering his prime.

Introducing ... (Potential Breakout Player): Tuomo Ruutu and Chad LaRose were breakout players in 2008-09 for their stellar offensive contributions. This year's potential breakout is much less seasoned and won't likely have the same level of impact, but 5-foot-10 forward Zach Boychuk(notes) could play his way into this lineup at some point this season. His hugely successful WHL career is done; the only things holding Boychuk back from making an NHL impact are a crowded lineup at forward and, perhaps, the need for some AHL seasoning. But he's going to be an outstanding pro.

Operators Are Standing By (The Defensemen): Joni Pitkanen's(notes) first season in Carolina was stellar: 33 points, the team's leader in ice time (including 26:28 per game in the playoffs) and a plus-11, which is a decent number made spectacular when you consider he was a combined minus-28 in the previous two seasons. Both of this primary partners last season, Babchuck and Seidenberg, weren't re-signed; how will that affect him?

Joe Corvo(notes) (14 goals, 38 points, 24:19 TOI) and Tim Gleason(notes) (20:39 TOI) were a solid pairing last season, and Corvo's in a contract year. So is Niclas "Secret Weapon" Wallin, who contributed in 64 games last season. The additions of Ward and Alberts make this a more physical group than last season's.

The Spokesmodel (The Goalies): Cam Ward was being taken for granted by the hockey world, never getting mentioned among the true franchise goalies in the NHL ... despite, you know, that Stanley Cup ring and Conn Smythe. His MVP performance for the Canes down the stretch was his reintroduction, and probably put him back into the Canadian Olympic conversation, too. That outstanding play extended into the postseason, where he posted a 2.67 GAA and a .915 save percentage in outplaying guys like Brodeur and Thomas in their respective battles. Michael Leighton(notes) will have backup duties again.

And Now, a Short Message From Tim Gleason:

The Inventor (The Coach): Maurice made a difference on this team in a way few predicted: Reconfiguring the system, managing the talent well and getting the Hurricanes to buy into a team concept that carried them to the conference finals. Plus, he didn't drop dead of a heart attack during any of their last-second victories, which is always a good thing.

2009-10 Preseason Report Card:

Forwards: A-
Defense: B-
Goaltending: A-
Special Teams: B- (Middle of the road, and the power play loses Babchuk's cannon.)
Coaching: B+
Management: A-

Red And Black Hockey says ...

"For the first time since the lockout, Carolina has made some significant off-season moves.  The common denominator among the new additions is that stuff called "size and toughness".  Hopefully, the result is that they won't get pushed around like they have in years past.  More importantly, we hope that the Hurricanes don't push /each other/ around.  It's refreshing to know that all four forward lines are made up of NHL-calibre players. The Hurricanes should be a more exciting team to watch this season, and there should be fewer 2-1 games.  Barring a catastrophic injury to Alexander Ovechkin(notes), the Canes aren't going to win the SE division, but they should make a return to the playoffs."

Bob from Canes Country says ...

"What team has the third most total wins in the East since the lockout?  The team Versus loves to ignore, the Carolina Hurricanes. The Canes figure to be televised nationally sooner or later though because since the turn of the century they have fared pretty well following the Winter Olympics.  2002- Stanley Cup Finals, 2006- Stanley Cup Championship,  2010-?"

Joe from 850 The Buzz says ...

"Unlike the seasons following 2002 and 2006, the Hurricanes will be a playoff team after a great run in 2009. Hey, third time is the charm."

Ashley from The Life and Times of a Caniac says ...

"The team is essentially the same team that went to the Eastern Conference Final last season, but with some added physicality and without some dead wood on the defense. As long as injuries don't plague the Canes too much, there is no reason that the Canes should not make it as far (or farther) this season."

Carolina On Ice says ...

"While everyone continues to overlook Carolina (‘Hurricanes? meh.') and peg them as Southeast runner-ups, they'll just continue to hammer the competition and eventually ruin your favorite team's Cup chances."

Don Draper Says ...

"Go ahead and keep insulting the Carolina Hurricanes. You'll grin like a fool for a monent, but in the end you'll die alone, sitting in your cheap seats; the partial season-ticket holder with Lucky Strike burns on his sweater, the one who women go home with out of pity."

Results May Vary (Biggest Issues Facing the Team): Did the stars align for the Hurricanes last season in a way that won't again this season? Or were the contributions from Ruutu, LaRose and Sergei Samsonov(notes) (48 points in an uncharacteristic 81 games) aberrations? Can the reconfigured defense be better than last season's? Can Jussi Jokinen(notes) continue to build on his amazing postseason (11 points and that historic game-winner against the Devils)? Will the special teams come close to how good this team is at even strength?

Warranty Expires (Prediction): The Hurricanes are built for another postseason appearance, and unless some of the contract players from last season completely regress it's hard to imagine they won't make the cut in the Southeast. There's a lot to like here, from Staal and the offensive standouts to grit down the lineup from guys like Scott Walker(notes). And once they're in the playoffs ... well, it's still hard to call them a Cup contender with that defense on paper, but they were only eight wins away last season.

I think having a second line scorer and maybe one more puck moving defenseman would make this a team nobody wants to meet in the playoffs. Just ask Boston..

To be fair, their fans do a good job of ignoring them too.

@ 3 and 4, have you ever been to a Hurricanes game? I'm just going to answer for the both of you and say no you haven't. During the Cup run in 2006 it was definitely sold out. Just ask the Oilers, Sabres, Devils, and Canadians how loud it was. Last spring the playoff games that I attended were also sold out and standing room only tickets sold out at a price of over $100. Would an apathetic fan pay over $100 to stand for 3 hours?

I love when people try to dis the Carolina fanbase...Boston only sells out when they win, look at the TD Waterhouse when the Bruins weren't making the playoffs. New Jersey can't sell out the bottom bowl of their new house. Detroit only sells out in the Cup Finals. But yea those fans are soooo much better. Chicago's house was empty a few years ago, but of course, they came up with the excuse that they stayed away because of the crappy owner. Nobody even knows how to find the Nassau Coliseum. I will give props to one team: Minnesota. Other than that, everyone has problem.s So don't give me "this can't sell out" crap. I was there in '06. I tried to get tickets. It was soldout in the finals. But go ahead, I don't care. Carolina doesn't need the New England crowd. Perfectly content without 'em. Go wait for the Whalers to come back. You know, because those teams were so good.

    7) Boston fought to 7 games?? Well they should be really proud of themselves, it's not like they were the #1 seed in the east with a Jack Adam, Veznia and Norse trophy finalists on their teams. I'm sure Boston fans were really proud of the B's effort to fight to 7 games against the hurricanes!!
The Canes were a Cam Ward back injury away from giving Pittsburgh all they could handle in the finals. Or maybe they were just imtimated by a Goalie named Flower...

As a Flyers fan, I hated the day Clarke traded Campbell River B.C.'s favourite son, Rod Brind'amour. I have friends from CR and when they were in the senior years of high school they often had "bush bashes". Basically, someone scores a bunch of booze (or better yet, a keg) and they have a bonfire deep in the woods and get wasted (not much to do in a small town). Anyway, one night my buddy is boozing it up at a bush-bash and he's looking up towards the mountains. The hills are extremely steep yet he sees a man running up the hill. He was scrambling like he was being chased by a bear or a cougar. Up the hill the figure went, never taking a break until he reached the summit. It then dawned on him. He had asked Rod earlier that evening if he was going to go to the party. Rod declined saying he was going to "work out". My buddy assumed this meant the gym. Not so; obviously, scaling rugged mountain terrain with a 70+ degree embankment at midnight on a Friday night is Rod Brind'amour's idea of "working out".
HOFer for sure. Seeing him raise the cup in 2006 was as satisfying, IMO, to seeing Bourque in 2001. Two guys who truly deserved to get their names on there...
Primeau was a good Flyer, but that trade was just wrong. Rod was the Flyers ironman and leader. Huge loss...
I'm not sure how much he has left in the tank (I'm his age and sometimes the day after a hard workout I feel like I'm 80!). That said, I would never count a Brind'amour-lead team out...

@ aaron s : Cheers, and good luck to the Hurricanes this season. I'm a big fan of Brind'amour (obviously) as well as Staal, Ward and Cole. I think Eric Cole could be a real steal as a late round hockey pool selection. He loves playing in Carolina and thrives there. I'm also glad Paul Maurice got another shot. Great coach, quality individual.
Being from Vancouver I am very excited about the upcoming Olympics. I believe Staal will be moved to wing and play on Canada's second line. He will be a very, very important part of the team. I would also select Ward over Fleury as the 3rd goalie (I think Luongo and Brodeur will nab the top two spots).
My next vacation is going to be down your way, I'm looking forward to it, I've heard it is beautiful on the coast and the people are real "salt of the earth" individuals.

Easy Tyler, all true NHL fans appreciate that the Hurricanes are a great franchise. Rutherford is routinely mentiond as one the league's top GM's.
    Ronnie Francis
    Glen Wesley
    Rod Brind'amour
Those three guys alone represent, what, 60 years of NHL experience. There's definitely tradition in Carolina, it may not be the Northwest US or Canada but anyone who lumps the Hurricanes in with the likes of Phoenix is ignorant. From what I saw on TV your barn was absolutely rocking last spring. Very impressive operation you guys have down there, there is probably some jealousy to be sure...

Guy. If you go head to the Nags Head/ Kitty Hawk area. Its in between alot of cool places to visit. Up in Duck you can go to the Rubber Duckie store, Down in the Oragen Inlet you can throw her into 4wd on the beach, Drive by Andy Griffiths house, Go to Brew Threw, a drive through liquer store and grab a Dune Burger across the street. Also check out the kite shop at the outlet center they have kites as big as a bus and if the Huanted pirate ship is still near the Pirates Quay gift center check that out too. , and deffinatly check out the Wright Bros museum. I'm NY born a raised but I love going down there for vay-cay it's a real great place and the beaches a super clean plus the food is to die foor if you like sea food I recomend Awful Arthurs Awful Oyster bar it's all you can eat sea food and the line is out the door so get there early. Other then that I must say if I move out of NY (not sure I see a future for my kids due to taxes and such) that will be my first choice of local to land in.

    Guy-
I hope Staal makes the team this year. It'll be tough, but he's coming along nice and should have a big year. This is his team. Ward over Fluery may be a hard sell. Ward was great, but then his back acted up in the playoffs. Fluery definitely showed he deserves it too. Once Broduer is gone, it won't be such a tough decision.
I hate when people knock on Carolina though. True, it isn't a die hard hockey town, and it never will be. This area is all about college sports. But hockey has found a real home here, and people that come to watch the games, including those from Montreal and buffalo or even Calgary have loved the area. There really isn't a lot to not like about Carolina. Good luck hosting the Olympics this year. And hopefully Luongo rebounds from his past injuries and survives the West this year. Not just for the Canucks, or the Olympics, but mainly for my fantasy team. But shoot man, that is one heck of a haul, coming from Vancouver all the way down to Tobacco road.

As a Lightning fan living in Tampa I had the opportunity to visit the RBC center in Raleigh for a Bolts-Canes game in October two years ago. The arena was pretty much sold out and the fans were terrific, even though we were wearing Lightning jerseys. One fan even apologized for beating us in his best southern accent , saying, "I'm sorry your team lost." Nothing like southern hospitality!

@ aaron : I have a time-share in Scottsdale, however, through Interval International, I am able to trade with others and stay at their time-shares. Anyway, I've done Palm Springs, San Francisco, Jackson Hole, Miami thus far. Word is that Myrtle Beach is as great a destination as there is. Two weeks, with a car rental of course, to experience the surrounding area is supposed to be a fabulous vacation. Yes, it's a bit of a stretch but 6-7 hours in a plane for a lifetime worth of memories is an easy trade-off. I'm going to try to see a NASCAR race (depending on the schedule). Some friends of mine who are NASCAR nuts (yes, they exist in Canada) have travelled to Charlotte to see a race live. They were blow away! Obviously, a NCAA basketball game would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience as well. Even a round of golf ($$$!) at Hilton Head (if I can pull it off, I do not have many connections down there...none actually) would be incredible.
    Cheers.

@ Runnin' up on ya : Thanks for the tips! Every traveller needs a tour guide. I sincerely appreciate it. I will absolutely check out the places mentioned. BTW, I was in NYC in 2006. Wow!!!!!!
You know, you simply cannot explain Manhattan, it needs to be experienced. We tried to skate @ the Rock (no go), then went to Bryant Park (too long a line-up) and ultimately ended up at the rink in Central Park. Afterwards we went for a few drinks in a nearby hotel lobby. It was the Ritz Carlton! After a few too many I decided to get some fresh air so I walked up the street and came upon the NY Athletic club. Oh, btw, there was a sign indicated the Heisman was being awarded that weekend! I was walking along one day, needed to piss and ducked into a hotel. As I was exiting I realized it was the St. Regis! St. Patricks Cathedral, Saks 5th Avenue, Radio City Music Hall, Battery Park, Brooklyn bridge, the village, Wall street, MSG, top of the rock, Empire State building, Central park, Grand central station, the Waldof Astoria etc...etc... We stayed at the Sheraton Manhattan which was right around the corner from Times Square! Saw "Spamalot" at the Schubert Theatre. There for a week, slept about 25-30 hours tops. Simply incomparable. London is awesome but nothing is over 5 stories. Hong Kong is mind blowing but lacks history. I'm no small-town kid (Vancouver's population, including the surrounding areas, is about 2.5 million) but NYC makes everything look like a truck stop town.

There are lots of supposedly great teams who wish they had the kind of success this decade that the Hurricanes have had. Teams like the Flyers, Rangers, Sabres, Canadiens, Bruins, Capitals, and a bunch of teams in the West wish they had 3 conference final appearances, 2 Cup Finals appearances, and one Cup this decade.
The Canes are not the poster children for the "hockey can't make it in the south" crew. The Coyotes and Thrashers are.
