Following the last meeting between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Oct. 16, Flyers captain Mike Richards(notes) lamented that he had "chased" Penguins pest Matt Cooke(notes) around last year but that "he wouldn't have anything to do" with Richards. He also said he'd consider fighting Cooke if Sidney Crosby(notes) dropped the gloves with Dan Carcillo(notes).
That precondition must have been waived on Friday night, as Richards and Cooke dropped the mitts six seconds into their rematch in Pittsburgh.
Those were some quality shots Richards got in while Cooke was on his knees. Maybe that's why Cooke wouldn't have anything to do with him ...
That tussle got the emotions going on both benches. Seventeen seconds later, Jody Shelley(notes) of the Flyers and Deryk Engelland(notes) of the Penguins went in a battle of heavyweights:
Score that one for Engelland, with a combination of offense and defense.
Overall, just another night at the rink for the Flyers and Penguins in the first period: Four fighting majors, seven minor penalties, including five in the first 2:35 of the game.
