On May 5, Jeff Malcovich made an unusual hockey purchase.
The former CBC Radio traffic reporter lives in Winnipeg, where the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers are headed. The official name of the new Winnipeg franchise has been a subject of both debate and mystery since the move became a probability. So Malcovich decided to make an investment … as the owner of www.ManitobaThrashers.com.
According to the Winnipeg Sun, he dropped $30 for that URL and for MantiobaThrashers.ca, telling the paper, "I play on a beer league hockey team and we might change its name to the Thrashers, so it probably won't be a waste of money either way."
From the Sun, Malcovich isn't alone:
"I've been reading the news that the new team may be called the Falcons, so I decided to scoop it up before someone else did," said Stonewall resident Russ MacDougall, who bought FalconsHockey.net on May 20. "I guess it's like a lottery ticket."
MacDougall is hardly alone. A number of sites relating to the Falcons, Jets, Thrashers, and even Bears have been registered within the past few weeks as word has spread about the NHL's return.
As have Moose; check out what's on WinnipegMoose.com, an URL owned by Zago Creative.
As the paper points out, NHL team sites, with its full name followed by a dot-com, simply redirect to their NHL.com team pages. But it still could be valuable real estate for anyone who owns a URL with a variation of the Winnipeg team name … although one would expect True North to have taken care of such matters before the big reveal.
For the record: WinnipegJets.com looks like this and Winnipeg-Jets.com looks like this and WinnipegJets.ca looks like this … and while True North owns Moosehockey.com, something called CondoReady, LLC has owned Jetshockey.com since 1999.

How 'bout the 'Winni @#$%'; nice ring to it for the "peggers".
Winnipeg Bears.
Winnie-the-Pooh was named for a black bear who travelled with a Canadian regiment during WWI and was named after it's adopted owner after his home town, Winnipeg. Once in London, the bear was loned to the London Zoo during the war, and eventually lived for 15 more years(1919-1934) as an inhabitant fully of the Zoo. In history with the previous Winnipeg Jets owner having a thing for the NY Jets(allegedly), and the name recognition with another NFL team. This idea is based on the history of the story Winnie-the-Pooh, with no real connection with the Chicago team, just happens to work with the NFL connection.

How about The Manitoba "Silly Nannies" lol
I would name them the Winnipeg SPIRIT After all the Atlanta Spirit Group fouled them up so bad they gave them to ya!
If NHL were relocated to Sask, they would've no problem giving a name to their franchise- Rough Riders...
Now, Winnipeg will flirt for a while to find a name and eventually come up with JETS...
Is there a point to this article? Of course ownership already knows the team name and has gone about securing the appropriate webspace.
Winnipeg blows. Are there any people out there who couldn't care less like myself?
...meanwhile in Hamilton....
winnipeg white thrashers
I was kind of hoping that they would change their name to the 'Threshers' . I thought it would be a subtle and humourous prairie change to the current 'Thrashers' name.
They can't name it the Winnipeg Jets- everyone already owns Jets merchandising. Need a new name so they can sell Jerseys/Hats etc.
How about Winnipeg Concords. They won't be the Jets cause the NHL needs to make revenue on new merchandise.
The Winnepeg Drummers. They will come out to the ice playing "The March of a Thousand Farts" as is tradition.
Three ( 3 ) more teams Mr. Bettman ! Three ( 3 ) more teams ! The Goal is ten ( 10 ) ! This will not
end until this number is achieved. Perhaps U.S. television executives will understand that the World
does not end at the Border. Show some respect for the only true friend that you have in the World.
