Convenience smiles upon Lou Lamoriello and the New Jersey
Devils once again, as the team announced forward/no-movement-clause albatross
Brian Rolston(notes) will undergo sports hernia surgery and miss 4-6 weeks.
Lamoriello said Rolston will miss four to six weeks and be placed on long-term injured reserve beginning today. T
hat will allow the team to go over the salary cap by the amount of Rolston's cap hit ($5,062,500) and fill out its roster to dress the full 20 players for Friday's home game against Colorado, but the team will still dress only 16 skaters for tonight's game in Buffalo.
"When we found out (Rolston would need surgery) it was took late, A, and, B, we weren't that concerned with the 10 forwards we have and the six defensemen for one night," Lamoriello said.
The Devils will have 16 skaters against the Buffalo Sabres tonight, the second time this week they'll ice a team a team with less than 12 forwards. From In Lou We Trust:
Yes, this only buys the Devils time, but Rolston on LTIR will free up more than enough space to replace all of the missing spots on the roster and give them a long time before having to make a permanent move.
At this point, we're pretty sure Lamoriello will advise any non-vital contributor to the Devils' lineup to take care of any lingering ailments as the season continues. Lasix surgery Dainuis Zubrus? Done. Joint replacement Colin White(notes)? Sold. Concussion feeling better, Bryce Salvador(notes)? Have you considered lipposuction?
