Puck Daddy - NHL

Ain't she a 'beaut? Using the power of imagination, one can see the undeniable awesomeness that will be the 2009 NHL Winter Classic at Wrigley Field. Even if it doesn't offer the same "hockey in a snow globe" feel that Buffalo had for the first edition, the Friendly Confines are going to present their own distinctive aesthetics for the Chicago Blackhawks and the Detroit Red Wings.

Stu Hackel of the New York Times' Slap Shot blog just wishes there had been some more news value from today's media event at Wrigley:

Gary Bettman was interviewed after the prepared remarks, and concluded his remarks by saying, "Hopefully it will snow a little," which isn't necessarily the best thing for the game conditions. Then came interviews with the Hawks Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane which were nice, but a half hour into the event, there was still no hard news.

Jim Devellano representing the Red Wings was interviewed next, who was happy about playing in "the cathedral of baseball" and exposing the Red Wings brand across the United States, adding it would be "a great opportunity for the league to expose itself" (there's a lot of exposing going on here) but still, there was no news.

And so on. Like Stu said, the NHL followed up with an e-mail that read "ticket information and other NHL Winter Classic 2009 details will be released at a later date." Can't really blame them for taking their time; this game is going to sell faster than a "Dark Knight" IMAX midnight showing.

If you haven't seen it, Icethetics has a rendering of the 1930s-style jersey the Blackhawks are expected to wear. It's a little busy; the Wings are going to be skating against a bunch of hyperactive barber poles.

isnt Toews missing something... like his "C". or did the Hawks come to their senses already. glad to see they bungled it better than the "Murray 08" jersey the Kings threw together

Perspective, please. Edmonton had the first, not Buffalo.

    @P-Ow --
Now, the Edmonton game was the "Heritage Classic." The Buffalo game was the Winter Classic. So I'm calling this a push.

They should move the ice rink closer to where the infield is located. Why place it out near the outfield, away from the seats.

Is that really the size of a regulation rink that they have out there?

50 degree weather in January in Chicago mdmd2222? I don't think so. It's going to be cold and windy. nothing says old time hockey like outdoors and Eddie Shore (quick Slap Shot reference). It's going to be a fun game to watch.

Toews is captains material-----NOW. The team lived through a captainless half-season upon the departure of LaPointe, where A's were rotated. He handled that. He'll be just fine as captain.

I really don't understand the whole "hockey in a baseball stadium thing. Wouldn't you increase visibility for ALL seating locations at a football stadium... say the storied SOLDIER FIELD!!!!!. Nobody is going to be able to see a dang thing at this game. Guaranteed no one will be able to see where the puck is. I would love to go to an outdoor game, but no way would I freeze my @ss off to see a bunch of dots skating around chasing an invisible puck. This is just bloody foolish. At least at Soldier Field the seating goes up in the air so everyone can see. The outfield is just too low for anyone to be able to see anything. No thanks, I'll watch from my comfy and warm home with free viewing and enjoy it more.

This is a completely "made for TV" event. Of course the fans attending won't see anything. They really didn't last year either. It will sell out because of the fun of attending, not to see the game. The good news is, because it is "made for TV" it will look super cool on all of our HD tvs at home. I was glued to last year's and I am excited to see this year's.

I doubt a football stadiumg would be any better. Maybe the sightlines are more direct, but distance-wise it would be as far if not further from the action for a majority of the crowd.
This event is all about the publicity, and Wrigely field is the sexy pick to stage the game. Especially important to get a "name" field like Wrigley after the Yankee Stadium thing fell through. Soldier Field? New or old, totally blech.

Why not just go with the sweaters they wore for the NHL's 75th back in '91-'92?

Wrigley is the worst ball field in the world & now your gonna hold the game there. I love what McDungh is doing with the Hawks, but please move it to a good stadium with more seats & most of all parking. Wrigley has no parking what so ever also you are not getting you local YUPPIE SCRUBS fans to come watch the game you will be getting people from all over Illinois & Detroit maybe even from other states. They should have really thought about it before doing this, I am a Hawks fan & probably will not goto this game even if I were given a ticket.

ok all of these people that think chicago is warm in the middle of winter have obviously never been there. It's usually in the teens to single digits in Chicago around then. Also, the main reason that the game isn't at Soldier field is because if the Bears make the playoffs (hah like thats going to happen) they would have to play there two days later, which wouldnt be enough time to get the field ready.

hopefully nobody gets injured by the stadium falling apart lol. Gotta love the netting in the upperdeck protecting u from falling debree. They need to get rid of this dump and build a new stadium just like it but with the modern greatness, no more pissin in a trough. Plus what are they doing for seating? the stadium seats???? so you are gonna freeze your balls off while squinting to see the action which is 50-100 feet away if not more??

Besides Wrigley and Soldiers fields, we have a pretty nice new Chicago FIRE stadium. It is smaller than Soldiers field, so people can actually see the game. But, the chance of that happening are negative 0% :)

why would you play a game in a stadium with no parking? soldier field, comiskey park (i know it's us cellular now, but it will always be comiskey to me...), even the fire stadium (sears field?) -- all of those venues at least have places for the sell-out crowd to park. also, the sight lines for baseball are terrible down the lines...i can't imagine how bad they'll be for hockey.
as for the weather, chicago can be anywhere from -10 to 60 degrees on new year's day.
all that said, i'll go to the game if i can get tickets. i may be a sox fan, but i'd love to see the hawks win on the big stage.

I love the idea of hockey at Wrigley. I will watch because I am a hockey fan.
However, leave it to the NHL to schedule a huge PR potential game like this on Jan 1st, the biggest college football day of the year. If they are trying to win over new fans, it will be hard to pry them away from a good bowl game.
You would think they could schedule it the following week, when they would have the national sports audience mostly to themselves.

I'm assuming there will be seating on the field itself. If everyone is THAT far back from the action, what's the point?
This game isn't going to look very good on t.v. if there are no fans behind the glass...
