If coach Herm Edwards didn't accuse the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and St. Louis Rams of cheating when they signed free agents of interest to the Kansas City Chiefs, he certainly implied it Monday.
Edwards indicated the Chiefs were as aggressive as NFL rules allowed them to be in pursuing center Jeff Faine and kicker Josh Brown. NFL rules prohibit teams from contacting prospective free agents or their agents until the new league begins. This year, that was at 11 p.m. Feb. 28. The Chiefs have signed only two free agents, and neither is guaranteed to be a starter. Demorrio Williams will challenge Napoleon Harris for a starting linebacking spot, while Devard Darling will compete for playing time at wide receiver.
"There were probably some deals done before (the start of the league year)," Edwards said when asked why the Chiefs didn't get in the game with either player. "We didn't cheat. We abided by the rules. That's how you're supposed to do it, and that's what we did."
