John Lynch

The Chicago Bears feel good enough about their biggest question mark on defense not to pursue free-agent safety John Lynch, who mutually parted ways with the Denver Broncos this week. The 36-year-old Hinsdale native is on good terms with Bears coach Lovie Smith from their days together in Tampa Bay, but Smith doesn't envision a reunion. Backing up Mike Brown and Brandon McGowan right now are youngsters Kevin Payne, Craig Steltz, Josh Gattis and Leonard Peters. They've combined for one start, by Payne.

''We're OK right now with what we have,'' Smith said. ''I think the world of John Lynch. You're talking about a player who plays the same way always. One of the toughest guys you'll be around. But we're going in a different direction. We have healthy guys that we feel pretty good about.''

I would like to see John Lynch go to Carolina Panthers. He would sure up an already stout defense.

I'm pretty sure he'll find a team considering he's still a beast... except not in pass coverage. I'd honestly like to see him on TV instead.

Sean H- your post would have been more intellegently insightful if you would have just written 1st. Stick to posting to the La Crosse rumor page if you just want to see your name on the board with lame statements.

There aren't so many really good safeties in the league, so he'll find a job. The Bears could sure use him, considering how thin they are at the position. Probably they just can't afford him, with all the deals they restructured this year. There you have it, players. If you quit whining for more money, you'll have a better team and win more. Oh well.

Wes W, Jones is a hard hitter, and he and Pool were fine last year. Browns need a CB. Go after Ty Law. Not Lynch. That would be a waste of time. He is old and gets burnt a lot.

I'd like to see Chicago pick him up just so Steltz can learn a little from him...Lynch has definitely lost a few steps but he knows how and when to be somewhere and could pass it along to the young guys. and lay a lick or two on AP.

wait, WHAT? where is daniele manning's name? please say they're not sticking him at corner and leaving him there. he's not even considered a backup safety(his strongest position according to scouts)? ok, you have to sign Lynch then. i love the loyalty to their own players, and the bears BY FAR show more team loyalty than any other organization(sometimes TOO much) but Lynch should be signed. the guy is a veteran, you got young guys back there. he becomes a teacher, at the very worst. it's totally worth the risk especially since mike brown is the mvp of the defense. and if he goes down...the whole defense takes a tumble.
just make sure he's still on his game, thats all i ask. please not another Archie. even i didn't think Archulete would suck that bad...

Good luck to Lynch, not sure any other team in the league is going to give him a full time starter role, which is what he wants, I hope he retires, always better to retire a year too early than a year too late. I am guessing he will be in TV this year, fat paycheck and a lot less work.

Lynch is a quality player...Pro Bowl...I couldn't count how many times he had to come to the line of scrimmage last year to try and stop the run or get pressure on the QB. Lynch is a standup guy and has done alot for the city of Denver since he has been here....I find it hard to believe the Broncos are treating him like this.

Gimy, Do remember Adam Archuleta? Remember what he did last year, oh yeah nothing.... He wasn't even a faint shadow of himself from the old Ram days with Lovie. Why would we want another guy like that teaching the younger players. (I'm not taking anything away from John Lynch, he's a heck of a player) and I'm pretty sure Denver wasn't running the same Cover 2 defense as the Bears.....

Lynch should be taken by the Bears or any other team, he's still a stud and Sean H you're an idiot. As far as sitting on a couch only between halves. I think Indy should pair him with Sanders so they could tear off peoples heads together. But only after week 1

I agree with the posters who said he should be on TV or coaching. He's got a lot to offer the younger players. I'd like to see the Bears sign him, but as a coach, not a player. Oh wait, we've already got that. What time is it? Has "Coach" Mike Brown torn his ACL yet? Or is he going to wait until the first preseason game?

How did the Broncos treat him badly, he was allowed to compete, but he has lost a step and in this league you have to be able to cover if you are playing safety, it's not like the rest of the NFL will look across the line of scrimmage and say, "let's run the ball since John Lynch is in there and we know we can beat him long", give me a break, you play the people who are going to give you the best chance to win. John is a great player, great citizen, and teamate, couldn't have asked for more than what he gave, but father time catches up with everyone, I hope he get's a shot starting somewhere else, but I doubt it at this point in his career, I hope he might return to the Broncos as a coach or personnel manager.

Its a good thing that the Bears dont sign him, yes he is pretty good but he's getting up there in age. He's 36, the Bears have plenty of safety's anyway. If Mike Brown can stay healthy and Brandon Mcgowan can stay healthy as well. Then the Bears will be fine. Mike Brown was a pro bowler before he had all these injuries. Lets just hope he can stay healthy, and plus the Bears couldnt afford him anyway, with all the signings with Urlacher, Harris, Hester, and Jones. They couldnt afford this guy anyway. Lets just see how the Bears do this year, this team is pretty much the same team of '06, the only reason why we couldnt win lst year is cause mainly of injuries (Tommie Harris, Dusty Dvoracek, and Mike Brown) and a bad line. But now everyone is healthy and we just drafted Chris Williams, so our defense should be fine and our offensive line (hopefully).
