Warner’s fast start leads Cards past Rams 21-13

Preview | Box Score | Recap

ST. LOUIS (AP)—A blow to the head turned Kurt Warner(notes) into a spectator in the second half, still in uniform but shut down for the day.

The Arizona Cardinals quarterback said it was just a precaution for what the team termed concussion-related symptoms. In any case, he’d already done enough to make it three straight victories over his former team in the stadium where he rose to stardom.

Warner threw for 203 yards and two touchdowns while building a 21-3 cushion, and the NFC West leaders hung on late, remaining unbeaten on the road with a 21-13 victory over the St. Louis Rams on Sunday. Arizona had a season-high 183 yards rushing, including 110 on 14 carries by Tim Hightower(notes) for the Cardinals’ first 100-yard game of the season.

“I felt pretty good coming out right after halftime, but I just wanted to be smart,” Warner said. “It was one of those situations where I didn’t feel perfect.”

Warner doesn’t recall having a concussion since 2003, when he was hurt in the Rams’ opener. That also was his final start with St. Louis.

“I’ve had a couple of minor concussions, very minor, nothing that’s been prolonged,” Warner said. “So not a state of panic. I feel good. I think I’m going to be just fine, but we’ll take it day by day and we’ll see.”

The Rams drove to the 7 late in the game needing a TD and a 2-point conversion to tie. Marc Bulger(notes) threw incomplete for Donnie Avery(notes) in the end zone on fourth-and-4 after some jostling from Arizona’s Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie(notes).

“We’ll just go with the ref’s call and hopefully next time it’ll go our way,” Bulger said.

The Cardinals (7-3) have won six of seven.

“We were hitting on all cylinders. We were making some big plays, and I think we had them off-balance a little bit,” Warner said. “When we’re clicking and in rhythm, that’s how we can play.”

Steven Jackson became the first Rams player to post five consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, gaining 116 yards on 24 carries with a fourth-quarter touchdown that capitalized on tight end Anthony Becht’s(notes) lost fumble, cutting the deficit to eight points. It’s also the fourth straight 100-yard game for Jackson.

The Rams (1-9) showed life in the second half after a miserable start, but are 0-4 at home after losing to the Cardinals for the sixth straight time. Earlier this season they became the first team in NFL history to face three straight unbeaten teams at home, losing to the Vikings, Colts and Saints, and management purchased more than 4,000 tickets to sell out the game and avoid a local TV blackout.

“We just came out really flat,” Jackson said. “Against a team like Arizona, it’s really hard to overcome that.”

Warner was 15 for 19 and usually had plenty of time in the pocket. The four incompletions came on two balls he threw away, a third that was batted down and a fourth on a left-handed attempt while in the grasp of defensive end Chris Long(notes).

It appeared Warner was hurt by safety O.J. Atogwe’s high hit on a blitz that drove the quarterback’s head into the turf. Warner lay on the field for a few seconds before getting up and stayed in the game for the last six plays of a 90-yard drive capped by Beanie Wells’(notes) 1-yard run.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt was unaware of Warner’s past concussion history, adding, “He’s started over 30 games for us and he hasn’t missed much.”

“What you don’t want to do,” Whisenhunt added, “is jeopardize games down the road.”

Matt Leinart(notes) took over after a late turnover at the end of the half, and Arizona mostly sat on the lead. That was enough to make Warner 5-2 against the Rams, with whom he became a storybook star while leading the team to two Super Bowls in three years from 1999-2001. He’s 26-4 at the Edward Jones Dome, including 4-0 in the playoffs, with 67 touchdown passes and 34 interceptions.

The Cardinals stumbled early when Warner and Wells missed connections on a pitchout for a lost fumble at the Arizona 25, leading to a Rams field goal. The rest of the half was all Arizona, with Hightower gaining 91 yards on eight carries, Anquan Boldin(notes) catching seven passes for 96 yards and his first TD since Week 3, and Larry Fitzgerald(notes) catching six passes for 71 yards and a score.

NOTES: St. Louis Cardinals star Albert Pujols was on the field for the coin toss and wore a Rams cap and jersey while watching from the sideline. … Cardinals CB Bryant McFadden(notes) (right knee bruise) was sidelined in the second quarter. … Eric Dickerson had four straight 1,000-yard seasons for the Rams from 1983-86. … Hightower’s 50-yard carry in the first half was the longest of his career. The previous best was a 30-yarder last November in St. Louis. … The Cardinals entered the game averaging 84 yards rushing.

Ha. Awesome. Being from St. Louis, I used to be a Rams fan. I can recall Warner's glory days there very fondly. Back then, living in St. Louis was awesome, with two kick ass teams. Now, however? The Rams suck, plain and simple. I am now a Cardinals fan, as I always liked Warner better than the team itself. He WAS the team. So now whenever the Cardinals beat the Rams it cracks me up.

And now I live in Minnesota, and tonight the Cardinals dominated the Vikings. :D Totally awesome.

    Go Cardinals!!! Go Warner!!! :D

I'd like to congratulate the genius in the Rams organization that gave Warner the gate. Idiot. Now he keeps coming back and kicking your head in!!!! Get rid of Bulger and beg Kurt to come back! Warner is a GREAT QB, and the Rams should have never let him go. Morons.

    In reference to Post #13....

You're an idiot. Next you're going to tell us Tom Brady is the QB for the Colts and ELI Manning is wrecking shop for the Patriots. Before you publicly embarrass yourself, you should check to see what you are actually saying.

On a serious note...it's clear that the Cards will need some help if Warner's out for an extended amount of time. But on the bright side, it looks like Beanie Wells knows what he's doing once he gets the ball, so if you let him run more, Leinart won't have to do as much; much the Titans are doing with Vince Young. I realize Wells is NOT Chris Johnson, but he is still a good back and Tim Hightower can shoulder some carries, so Leinart may be able to "survive" a couple weeks, if need be.

Warner probably took himself out so that he would not totally obliterate the RAMS defense. My opinion is that if he was in there the whole game, he probably would have thrown close to 400 yards and had at least 2-3 more passing touchdowns. Add a rushing touchdown to the mix and that score would have been 49-13. lol

Number 13 - "because the Cards are gonna need to be running on all wheels in order to defeat a resurgent Titans team with DeAngelo Williams and Steve Smith playing like they did last year."

Never discuss football in public again!

Well done Cardinals! Scary however to see how much they rely on Kurt though. Lienart is clearly a garbage qb. The Ken Wisenhunt doesn't even trust him to throw the ball, and instead rely on conservative running. Screw his Heisman trophy, only gave him an ego he doesn't deserve. Let's just hope Kurt's injury isn't anything serious, because the Cards are gonna need to be running on all wheels in order to defeat a resurgent Titans team with DeAngelo Williams and Steve Smith playing like they did last year.

Great second half effort by the rams. Nice back to back to back 4th down conversions. You guys definitely gave me a HUGE scare at the end after the Cardinals looked to be running away with the game. Secondary needs some work though, or maybe it just looks that way when trying to stop the Cards fantastic recieving corps.

If rams play well, the rest of their schedule isn't too bad, good luck Rams, no one likes to see a team go 1-9.

    REALLY?????
I thought Steve Smith & DeAngelo Williams played for the Carolina Panthers????

    GO CARDINALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's no accident that the chiefs beat the steelers. Haley was with the Steelers as was his dad. He played them in the superbowl. He got Leonard Pope from the Cardinals for Cassel. As for Linart, he is no Kurt Warner, but he knows the plays and should be brought in from time to time, now two quarters though, he's not ready for that. I hope he learns from Kurt.

In addition to his concussion playing for the rams he broke his thumb and played with it broken. It didn't heal well and plauged him in both New York and Arizona UNTIL he took a suggestion to wear gloves, then he came back like his superbowl self. He has been playing at a high level every since, except for a game here and there, all related to that thumb injury. I have been following the Cardinals just to see him play and inspire others to play their best. When Wisenhunt came all went to plan, as Dr. Evil would say. I wonder how many 9-7 teams have made it into the superbowl and he almost won, except for the last second heroics of the Steelers and super-Ben. Kurt is only the second QB to appear in the superbowl for two teams. Favre might add three to that total if he can get past Dru Brees and Kurt Warner. They play in regular season soon, which should be a good game if some of our important players heal up in time. Bennie Wells is really fun to watch. The team seems to take a lot of energy from Kurt. I'd like to see Brian St. Pierre play a quarter. He did well during the preseason.

I don't think Leinart's a bust. Look at how little playing time he actually gets - he hardly ever runs the plays that he was being asked to run today, and he's probably pretty rusty. If he was playing consistently, he would probably be able to be perceived as a much better player.

Chris Long just got his 3rd sack in three games, can people please get of his back now about him being overrated! He would be a beast on a better overall defensive team, he gets double teamed a lot due to the Rams D Line being pretty awful.

The Rams need to get Jason Campbell (I think Campbell is done after this year in Washington, and he'd do better than Bulger), some free agent offensive linemen, Terrence Cody (we need a presence on the D-Line), to keep Atogwe (I don't know how we'll do this, given that he has no reason to want to be here), and for Laurinitis and Long to keep blossoming. We traded away Witherspoon, and that really hurt us, he was an underrated LB.

Runningbacks have a limited shelf life in the NFL, and Jackson is already over halfway through his career. Unfortunately, I don't think our management will put a winning team around him before he leaves us. WRs are good late in their career, as Holt & Bruce are showing, and Warner in Arizona has shown us up for dropping him. But RBs don't do as well in their 30s as WRs and QBs do, and we need to either trade Jackson for a great young star soon, or put a good team around him.

Interesting. Annoyed annoys me. Hey Annoyed pull your head back through your sphinxter muscle, apie the brown stuff from your eyes and look around. As much as I dislike Bulger, and I disdain Marc Bulger, the Rams are actually making improvement every week. Yes, I really, really do not like Bulger. Since Bulger replaced Kurt Warner as orchestrated by the "old" Rams regime. Wait a minute, Warner rose to success with the Rams? Nonsense. Warner went from throwing toilet paper rolls at a Hyvee grocery store to the Big Heads (you'll get your R back and get the H out of your AS$) because nobody in the NFL wanted to give him a chance, right? Yeh, right! Rmember you have to go back to the Chicago Cardinals to find a league champion unless you want to talk baseball and that would be the St. Louis Cardinals...........oh, the same place the 2000 Super Bowl champion Rams are from.

Funny how Lamb fans think they're going to be in every game since last week's effort. Wrong. They're still the Lambs, as evidenced by today's back to normal uninspired play.

Bulger needs to go. The Lambs need a QB with balls instead of one who is hesitant and calls drive-killing timeouts.
