NFL Power Poll: Texans gaining playoff momentum

The second half of the season could be historic for the Houston Texans. They have a chance to make the playoffs for the first time, with their best record ever (5-3) at the midway point of the season.

After a 1-2 start, the Texans have momentum. Matt Schaub(notes) is playing superbly at quarterback, teaming with Andre Johnson(notes) to become one of the NFL's most prolific quarterback-receiver combinations.

However, the Texans' playoff push will not be easy. They lost tight end Owen Daniels to a season-ending knee injury, they have not generated a consistent pass rush, and they face a major challenge in Week 9 when they visit Peyton Manning(notes) and the unbeaten Colts. Beating Indianapolis would be an even stronger indication that the Texans, up four spots to No. 13 in this week's Poll, are ready for prime time.

1. New Orleans Saints (last week: 1). Not only are they talented, but they have the toughness to win close games.

2. Indianapolis Colts (2). If they beat the Texans in Week 9, the AFC South race will be over — if it's not already.

3. Minnesota Vikings (7). Brett Favre(notes), Adrian Peterson, Sidney Rice(notes), Percy Harvin(notes). Weapons and more weapons.

4. Denver Broncos (3). They took a beatdown in Baltimore, but their body of work remains excellent.

5. New England Patriots (4). A bye week gave them extra time to prepare for the Dolphins and their Wildcat attack.

6. Pittsburgh Steelers (6). Healthier than they have been all season, but face a tough road test against Broncos.

7. Dallas Cowboys (10). Tony Romo(notes) is on a mistake-free roll. Next up, a date in Philly for the NFC East lead.

8. Cincinnati Bengals (5). The Ravens will want revenge this season, but the Bengals will be rested after a bye.

9. Philadelphia Eagles (14). Young playmakers make their offense far less dependent on Brian Westbrook's(notes) health.

10. Baltimore Ravens (13). No sophomore slump for Joe Flacco(notes). He and Ray Rice(notes) lead an offense that is dynamic.

11. Atlanta Falcons (12). Mike Smith(notes) must deal with his first two-game losing streak as Falcons head coach.

12. Arizona Cardinals (8). More up and down than a pogo stick. Anemic ground attack remains an issue.

13. Houston Texans (17). They need more punch in their running game, and Ryan Moats(notes) may be the answer.

14. San Diego Chargers (15). Cannot figure why this team starts slowly, but a second-half surge could be coming.

15. New York Giants (9). They have many issues, including Eli Manning(notes). Their slump will not end until his does.

16. Green Bay Packers (11). Favre has beaten them twice, and pass rushers continue to beat up Aaron Rodgers(notes).

17. Miami Dolphins (21). Ted Ginn remains an enigma as a receiver. But as a returner he has been electrifying.

18. Chicago Bears (19). Unbeaten at home, but they will only reach the postseason by playing better on the road.

19. New York Jets (16). Their bye comes at a good time. Some soul-searching is needed after another tough loss.

20. San Francisco 49ers (18). Under .500 for the first time. They need to right the ship with their next two at home.

21. Carolina Panthers (23). Lack firepower to overcome turnovers, but can still win when they run effectively.

22. Jacksonville Jaguars (20). In three of their four losses, they have yielded more than 30 points. Not a good sign.

23. Buffalo Bills (22). Regardless of the quarterback, offense remains anemic. Not much reason for optimism.

24. Washington Redskins (27). Scoring was a problem before they lost Chris Cooley(notes). It could get worse.

25. Seattle Seahawks (24). Jim Mora is finding out why Mike Holmgren thought it was time for a sabbatical.

26. Tennessee Titans (29). So far, so good for Vince Young(notes) in his bid to reestablish himself as an NFL starter.

27. Oakland Raiders (28). In five of their last seven, they have generated fewer than 200 yards total offense.

28. Kansas City Chiefs (26). Larry Johnson(notes) brought them attention, but not the kind they were hoping for.

29. St. Louis Rams (32). First win should relieve some pressure. Steven Jackson is running with authority.

30. Detroit Lions (25). How many years will pass before the Lions reach Thanksgiving still in contention?

31. Cleveland Browns (20). Their offense is pathetic enough to make any team's defense look good.

32. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (31). Josh Freeman(notes) gets his chance to start at quarterback. Talk about a tough job.

UNLIMITED With that rational the Pats should have beaten the Broncos. One game separates them.Like i said 7 out of 10 we win against them. They had a great start.I say they go no better than 500. the second half.Yes it was 2 SUCK teams we blew away.BUT they are PRO NFL TEAMS none the less. The Pats season will be defined with the up coming Colts and Saints games. As a Pats fan for 40 years this year Pats are still a mystery.I was'nt suprised by the defeat at Denver,They have always been a tough opponent.Much credit to Josh for having them where they are.But by years end i dont see them better than10-6 .

So after the Eagles spank the Cowboys Sunday night, can we expect the birds to go up to at least #7 or will the disrespect continue?

eric, did u watch the steelers Vikings game? jw, the steelers didn't beat them, Vikings beat themselves. It was a close game with the Vikings on the move the whole game! couple bad turnovers on the road, home team should win.

If that game was at the metrodome, it would of been a blow out!

Soon as the pats start beating teams with some winning records, then move them up the rankings, be glad where they are.

and also, the ravens never beat up the Vikings, the vikings were in the middle of a blow out before they started celebrating a little to early then gave up some points, ravens lead for about 2 mins that half?
Don't let sports announcers amp up the game for you to much, it wasn't really that close.

Top 3 spots are solid, the rest under them are going to get shuffled every week.

I know some the the E-gal fans are upset about the cowboys being rated higher, and a part of me dont blame you, but y'all did lose to the raiders, that had to hurt your ranking.

Squeeler fans, you have lost a couple of games, and the win over minnesota was tight, but you prolly should be up higher.

how overrated are the cowboys? the only teams rated below them that could be ahead are baltimore and filty-DUH-fia. really how over-rated ? i guess we'll find out this week !

John Doe, you say the Steelers were lucky to beat the Vikings because the Vikes gave them 2 turnovers. Last night the Saints gave the Falcons 4 turnovers and 442 yards of total offense and still came away an 8 point winner. The Saints also posted 437 yards in the process. Their defense came to play though and collected 3 interceptions at critical times. You don't give up because you turn the ball over a couple of times.

John Doe you are insane. 6 Super Bowl trophies and its all luck. Wow!

Now Denver you can say is way-over-rated. Splattered by the hapless Ravens and who thinks anything but a can of whoop-ass is coming to Denver this week.

Undefeated is so silly a thing to have attributed so much to the Vikings and Denver and Indy. Sure they do real well against the Sisters of the Blind and Crippled but the Saints are the only team with any claim of real quality.

It all means dick. Whatever city the Lombardi trophy is sitting in come February is all that matters. Run your mouths. I don't even need to tell you what team I follow.

I follow the team from the AFC that will win the Superbowl, or at least has the best team and leadership to do that. "Real" football fans will know and probably not comment.

Those of you that are here to simply run your mouths about your mediocre teams, from the city that your father happened to bone your mom in and squirt your sorry azz out in, having no idea or history about that team, will once again....bla...bla...bla about what you think you know.

You know who you are. The more you comment, the more the World will see what a blow hard you are. You will know my team at SB time...when I scorch your collective azzes.

Steelers lucked out of their a$$ a 28 pt swing because the vikings GAVE them two turnovers. Yes, they lost but giving the steelers a gift doesn't mean they will do that every week. They ran up 350 some yards of offense on the steelers supposadly good defense and held their supposadly fantastic passing attack to 150 some yards. Thats what you call a lucky ass win. Steelers are overrated as hell. They were lucky to win the SB last year, skin of their teeth team that needs to have a lot of luck and every break go their way or they are no better than a .500 team. Face reality.

The Texans may not be getting sacks, but they are creating just enough pressure to make things difficult for opposing QBs. Moats has really shined when he has been given a chance and now is his time to really shine, and it will only motivate Slaton to fix his issues.

The Colts only won by 6 last year and Daniels had 1 catch for 14 yards in that game so we can be effective without him in the lineup although it hurts. 10 different recievers had at least 1 catch this past Sunday so the weapons are still there. When they came to Houston the Texans had them beat and Sage Rosenfels decided he could fly and blew the game. This defense is much, much better than last years and Schaub and AJ will finally be on the field at the same time vs the Colts.

This is a crucial AFC South stretch for the Texans with their next 4 games all against division foes. The Texans will win the South and it will start this Sunday. The Colts victories this year aren't all that impressive outside of Arizona who they caught on a slump in their pogo-stick momentum of a season. The city of Houston and this franchise have been waiting 8 long years to make the playoffs and this is closest we have been, the players know that and it will show on Sunday!

Its tough to judge who will go to the super bowl on the NFC side. The saints remind me of the 15-1 vikings and well the vikings always choke. I think a wildcard from the NFC is going to go.

The Rams may have gotten that first win but it was against the Lions. You know, that team where the owner seems the think he's the greatest football mind in history.. That owner who has been making the picks in the draft and letting others take the blame.. That owner that CAUSED the team to go 0-16.. Between that owner, his kid and that loser Lewand, they've pretty much destroyed the team. Yeah, the Rams may have gotten that first win, but don't get your hopes up too high. They only beat the Lions.
