Vikings doomed by mistakes vs. Pittsburgh, will need to clean up for Green Bay

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - A good night's sleep did nothing to quell the disappointment from the Minnesota Vikings' first loss of the season.

The way they see it, the game at Pittsburgh on Sunday was there for the taking and they gave it away in a 27-17 defeat.

The Vikings out-gained Pittsburgh by 127 yards, held the ball for nearly 37 minutes and forced the Steelers into 4-for-12 on third downs. Yet Minnesota still found a way to lose the game thanks to 11 penalties, two turnovers in the red zone that went for touchdowns and an inability to put the ball in the end zone from one yard out in the third quarter.

"We left a lot of plays out there. We had many opportunities to win," cornerback Karl Paymah(notes) said. "It's just sickening, so many plays. I can't really dwell on it. We've just got to learn from it and just keep pushing."

They will have to be much sharper on both sides of the ball this week when Brett Favre(notes) makes his highly anticipated return to Lambeau Field to face the Packers.

The Vikings (6-1) were in position to beat the Steelers twice in the fourth quarter, but a tripping call on Jeff Dugan(notes) nullified Favre's TD pass to Sidney Rice(notes) that would have given them the lead. On the next play, Brett Keisel(notes) stripped Favre and LaMarr Woodley(notes) returned it 77 yards for a score.

Coach Brad Childress said he spoke to league officials about the tripping call on Monday and there "absolutely was not" anything he would ask Dugan to do differently on the play.

"And I know there's 32 other clubs in the league that coach the same way, to block the end of the line of scrimmage," Childress said. "I thought it was a job well done."

After Percy Harvin's(notes) kick return for a touchdown, the Vikings again drove inside the Pittsburgh 20. But Favre's screen pass slipped through Chester Taylor's(notes) fingers and fell right into linebacker Keyaron Fox's(notes) lap. He returned the interception 82 yards for a score to put the game away.

The Vikings racked up 78 yards on those 11 penalties after averaging just 4.5 penalties a game in their previous six. Five of the flags on Sunday were thrown for false starts, including two against tight end Visanthe Shiancoe(notes).

"Those are things that obviously you need to clean up, particularly when you go into a hostile environment," Childress said. "You've got to be able to handle those and yards are hard to come by, particularly with the lost-yardage type of things."

All-Pro left guard Steve Hutchinson(notes) was whistled for a false start, his first penalty in 27 games. Right guard Anthony Herrera(notes) also got one, something he attributed to excitement in the heat of the moment.

"We were still able to move the ball. I think Brett did pretty good," Herrera said. "We had 400 yards total offence against Pittsburgh Steelers. Any day you have that, with how many false starts you have or whatever, that's pretty good."

With Adrian Peterson contained by the aggressive Steelers defence, Favre threw the ball 51 times for 334 yards.

"You always like to be able to exert your will and run it all the time," Childress said. "Sometimes logic dictates that you don't and you need to spread people out a little bit more and do some other things. Perfect world, you don't want 51 throws, for us, the way we play football."

When Favre returns to Green Bay this week to face his former team, he will be seeing a Packers defence that is starting to come together under new co-ordinator Dom Capers and his 3-4 scheme. The Packers rank third in the NFL in total defence and will be ramped up after Favre torched them for three touchdowns in a victory at the Metrodome on Oct. 5.

"They're still gaining confidence in their system," Herrera said. "That's all. But they're going to be really good at it."

Why am I a Steeler fan on this site? To read you Viking fans whining about how you got used and abused on Sunday, and to gloat. The Vikings are still and always will be the masters of the big choke! By your logic Pittsburgh should have won the games against the Bears and the Bengals. Your failure to punch it in with a 3rd and goal at the one, with the best running back in the league, and settling for three tells the whole story of the game.

How come the Steeler Fans are on this site? Sounds like you are making excuses for your team because you know that you were very lucky to win! There was no doubt about Minn beating you at every point of the contest except the score! You were lucky we didn't beat you by more than Ten! With Refs like that and the ones at Cleveland ( First down Marker and interference calls) its no wounder you win SB! How much did you pay for this win, Rust Fans! Favre is better, AP is better, Pure Lucky! Your main sponsor should be "RUSTYS" ( Movie CARS)" RUSTYS" .

I gladly don't have to watch the games and be spared some of the awful commentary that the networks provide.

I don't see what the Vikings are crying about though. They are lucky they didn't get beaten by more. Crying bad penalties are rather silly. Every good team overcomes them while the bad teams end up crying much like you see on the blogs by the Vikings fans. I don't see teams like the Colts crying at the refs when they get a bogus holding penalty. They usually make the play up. I don't see the Steelers crying about a nit picky defensive holding. They work on stopping them the next set of downs.

Minnesota isn't a superbowl contender yet. The talent exists, but they are playing some horrible ball and relying more on luck than skill at times. A team shouldn't give up 30 points to the Cleveland Browns. The Vikings have to stop playing to the level of the other team. They will get beat every time when a good team rolls into town.

You guys are dumb. If you look, there is holding on every play. It is just the very obvious ones that need to be called.

I agree with the comments written here regarding the game

    1. There was holding on the kick off return in the middle of the field against the vikings that was not called.
I wondered if anyone noticed the hold on instant replay.

    2. The Fox announcers were quite obvious in expressing thier bias toward the Steelers. It's something only
only Steelers fans would notice because it's our team we are rooting for and the bais comments are
    exposed to us.

If you look at the big picture of this game the referees balanced the bad calls or overlooked calls evenly against both teams.

Important point to Steeler fans; the national sports media in print or television is always biased against the steelers. We win more Super Bowls than any team in NFL history and all sports media have cover stories on every other team in the NFL.

The good benefit to this is Steelers are always under the radar in sports media coverage. It helps our players to know that they will not see themselves week in and week out on any national sports show or in any national written sports media outlet. It helps the Steelers to stay focused on winning Superbowls.

Hopefully, the Steelers will endure the biased national sports anaylists, be ignored by national sports media and go on to win Superbowl # 7 this year.

    Go STEELERS

Announcers are entertainment. They are not unbiased. One was blatantly pulling for the Vikings. Listen to him when each team gets tackled for a loss and see what he says in each case, the bias is really funny.
Vikings could have won, were they the better team yesterday. They were not. They need to improve.
The Amount of yards was also due to the Steeler D getting 2 TD in a row, which kept the Vikings offense on the field with an increasingly tired Steeler's D. When the Steeler O went on they faced a fresh Viking D, it showed and they looked like they did at the beginning of the game. Not to say Vikings didn't to wonderful, they did. But the numbers are a bit deceiving because of the way the 4th went down.

Was a great Steeler's victory and a good game overall. Both teams should be complaining at the officiating as there were equally bad calls on both sides of the ball. The Miller offensive pass interference call was pathetic as was the tripping call on the Vikes 4th quarter touchdown. Roethlisberger & co. didn't put on much of a show but Favre looked as good as I've ever seen him. I would like to see both of these teams in the SB; would be a great rematch. Great game for the fans of both teams. In a game like this it's too bad there must be a looser and too bad the officiating sucks so bad..

I agree with you _99, and what the hell is up with these network announcers always pulling for whoever is playing the Steelers?? I could not believe my ears when "Moose" Johnson and "Goose" Saragusa were talking about what the Vikings needed to do toward the end to win the game!! These guys are supposed to be objective, and most of them sound like they're wearing the cheerleading outfits of the other team!

The Vikings are crying about a tripping call that was more of a penalty than the interference call on Heath Miller that negated a Steeler touchdown. The Steelers also fumbled the ball at the five yard line in what was a sure scoring drive. Also on replays of Harvin's kick return touchdown, there is an obvious hold around the neck at the 35 yard line that was a key non call that put the Vikings right back in the game. The Vikings are lucky they only lost by 10 points.
