Chiefs say they finalized settlement with RB Larry Johnson for his comments

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Kansas City Chiefs, apparently fearful of losing in arbitration, agreed Monday to cut Larry Johnson's(notes) suspension in half for making gay slurs.

The agreement saved the running back about US$315,000. The Chiefs issued a terse announcement saying they had made the settlement in conjunction with the NFL Management Council and the NFL Players Association. Originally, they suspended the former two-time Pro Bowler two weeks, which would have cost him about $630,000.

He will still miss the game at Jacksonville this week and not participate in team activities until Nov. 9. The Chiefs had said the suspension was for conduct detrimental to the team.

Johnson's agent, Peter Schaffer, told The Associated Press on Saturday the agreement had been tentatively agreed to. Schaffer said Monday that as far as he knew, Johnson would remain with the Chiefs. He needs just 75 yards rushing to become the team leader.

"I've been given no indication other than that," Schaffer said. "There have been no discussions about that."

The Chiefs, as they've done since the controversy erupted on Oct. 25, refused any comment.

Schaffer told the AP that both sides benefited from the settlement and that Johnson had learned from the entire experience. He posted the slur on his Twitter account after also questioning coach Todd Haley's credentials. He then repeated the slur the next day to reporters.

"Larry apologized," Schaffer said. "He learned from it and hopefully other people learned from it. My hope is that people learn that something positive can come out of this and that there are words that should not be used because they demean people."

I don't care what he said about the coach. I don't really care what he said about the girly boys or the boyey girls or whatever is politically correct to call that group of individuals. Know this, most of us would never admit to what we really say about them in private anyway.....hope you folks are not surprised. Does not mean we hate you, just don't really care. But what I do care about is his comments about the dude making 5 dollars. I have spent a few "5 dollar bills" at the stadium since Larry da Fairy hater has arrived. How dare you sir belittle the working man's dollar. It takes 66000 fans that bring 5 dollars to each game to pay this worm dropping his salary. That is almost a full stadium. If the chiefs keep playing the same, that will be a full stadium. If you ever get back on the field Larry, look up and wave to all of us, thank us with that bought smile of yours, give us that pyramid sign when you score....er if you score...enjoy that moment.....in five years you will be sharing a room with Lawrence Phillips.......then you can make your gay comments......first hand dude! (the author of this wishes in no way to offend any race, sex, religion, unless your name is Larry Johnson).

No. But thanks for your weak a$$ comment. The only thing LJ learned was that he can do whatever he wants and his agent will bail him out. He also learned that his coach is a little bitc H. Todd Haley just showed that he is all talk and no bite. Good luck gaining any respect from here on out you turd.

See? Everybody's happy now. All's well that ends well. This very caring organization and very sweet man came to an understanding. Larry has learned (again) from his mistakes and the Chiefs and NFL have shown such towering concern for the gay community. What a happy ending.
