Icon booed, grudge renewed as Vikes and Pack feud

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP)—Brett Favre(notes) will run out of the Lambeau Field tunnel wearing purple, and nobody really knows how Green Bay Packers fans will react.

But if the angry buzz generated by the mere appearance of in-stadium video highlights of Favre and the Vikings during the first few Packers home games is any indication, the once-beloved face of the franchise will be booed. Loudly.

The tempest of emotion leading to Sunday’s Vikings-Packers game could make for one of the most awkward homecomings in sports history. Favre, perhaps the league’s most emotion-driven player, will try to tune it all out.

“The people that have jumped ship or whatever completely, what can I do?” Favre said. “I’m not going to concern myself with it.”

That makes one of us.

Everybody else is ready for some great sports theater.

Joe Montana faced the 49ers as a Chief. Michael Jordan faced the Bulls as a Wizard. Heck, Favre already faced the Packers—and beat them—at his new home, the Metrodome, less than a month ago.

But as Favre returns to the scene of his surreal standoff with the Packers’ front office last summer, it’s hard to imagine a more intense setting.

Favre has been booed before at Lambeau, something that’s bound to happen when you’re the NFL’s career interceptions leader—even in mild-mannered Green Bay. And that, Favre said, felt “kind of a kick in the stomach.”

Bring it on, Vikings defensive end Jared Allen(notes) says.

“They might still like Brett, but they’re Packer fans,” Allen said. “They’re going to boo the Minnesota Vikings. It’s not going to hurt my feelings. They’re not going to make me cry. As a matter of fact, I expect good harsh ripping-on. I want to hear some funny stuff out there.”

And while it’s only Week 8, the stakes couldn’t be much higher for both teams.

With a victory, the Vikings take a huge step toward putting the NFC North out of reach. A Packers win makes the division race tight.

Then there’s the snap-judgment factor: If Favre wins, he’ll complete a season sweep over his former team and stick it to the man who traded him, Packers general manager Ted Thompson.

But if Favre melts down in a flurry of interceptions and the Packers win behind another strong performance by Aaron Rodgers(notes), it will be seen as a sign Thompson and Packers coach Mike McCarthy knew what they were doing all along.

Neither Favre nor McCarthy spent this week revisiting last year’s dispute, which began when Favre suddenly told the team he wanted to come out of retirement last summer—after asking for, then abruptly turning down, a chance to come back to the team earlier that offseason.

Increasing public tension between Favre and the Packers’ front office during training camp in 2008 eventually led to a sit-down meeting between Favre and McCarthy, and McCarthy determined Favre wasn’t in the right “mindset” to return.

McCarthy never fully explained what he meant, but did say earlier this year that Favre expressed a desire to play for the Vikings at the time.

Favre instead was traded to the New York Jets, retired again after last season, then unretired again to sign with the Vikings. Favre said this week that it’s “probably best that things worked out the way they did,” and McCarthy agreed.

“As far as his situation over there, and if he’s happy, that’s great,” McCarthy said. “But going back to that time for everybody, really in my view it has nothing to do with (Sunday’s) game.”

McCarthy is more concerned with stopping Favre, something the Packers didn’t do in their 30-23 loss at the Metrodome Oct. 5.

The Packers held Adrian Peterson to 55 yards on 25 carries, essentially daring Favre to beat them through the air.

Did he ever: Favre was 24 of 31 for 271 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions, and wasn’t sacked once.

But the Vikings could be without wide receiver Bernard Berrian(notes) because of a left hamstring injury Sunday, and the Packers are playing better on defense.

Safety Atari Bigby(notes) is back from a knee injury, improving communication in the secondary. And after struggling with the transition to outside linebacker in Dom Capers’ 3-4 defense, Aaron Kampman(notes) is playing as a down lineman more often and is putting more pressure on the quarterback.

The Packers gave up a total of three points in back-to-back wins over Detroit and Cleveland, but know they’re in for a more significant test Sunday. Defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins(notes) said stopping Peterson remains the Packers’ No. 1 priority, but they have to get more pressure on Favre.

“Brett’s a great quarterback, and given the time, he’ll find somebody or he’ll make something happen,” Jenkins said.

Pass rush pressure wasn’t exactly a problem for the Vikings in their first matchup with the Packers. Rodgers was sacked a chinstrap-snapping eight times at the Metrodome, including 4 1-2 by Allen.

Rodgers could welcome back left tackle Chad Clifton(notes), who hasn’t played a full game since the season opener because of a recurring right ankle injury. And fellow veteran Mark Tauscher(notes), who recently re-signed with the Packers after rehabbing a serious knee injury from last season, could figure in the mix at right tackle.

Rodgers didn’t wilt under pressure against the Vikings, throwing for 384 yards and nearly leading the Packers to a late comeback.

“As far as rattling him, he might have been a little quick getting out of the pocket, but I thought he did a pretty good job holding in there and getting the ball down the field,” Allen said. “He still threw for a ton of yards on us, so we have to clean that up.”

But for everyone else, the focus will be on Favre.

Running back Ahman Green(notes), a former Favre teammate who recently re-signed with the Packers, said he expects Favre to play the same way in a different uniform.

“I grew up a 49ers fan, seeing Joe Montana in a Chiefs uniform,” Green said. “Or seeing Michael Jordan when he came back wearing No. 45. It’s a little different. But it’s something that you just know inside that athlete, they’ve still got a little fight left in them, or they wouldn’t go back on the field.”

The people at Green Bay are blind, the coaching staff at Green Bay is stubborn and stiff necked. They do not see the forest for the trees. They read too much press about how good they are going to be this year yet they stink. I just watched Minnesota have a 3rd and 17 and convert because Green Bay rushed only 3...only 3. Favre will kill them every time he plays them. Mike McCarthey stinks as a coach, and also Thompson in his position they are threatened by Favre and that's why he got rid of him. Every coach that embraced Farve did well, watch how well the Vikings do because they embrace Favre's experience. I was born and raised in Milwaukee and love the packers. Packer fans better get used to what they are seeing and welcome back the 1970's because that's where this organization is going...in the toilet. Favre was the savior of the team and they got rid of him, wake up Packers fans get rid of McCarthey and Thompson, they are too proud to listen and change.

If the Packer fans want to boo someone, it should be Mike "lard arse" McCarthy and Ted "the turd" Thompson. Those two are the ones that caused all of this, and the media. If they boo someone who gave all of those years to them and brought back to life a dead team that had been dead since Bart Starr left, that just shows what a bunch of goofy idiots they are up there in WI. Remeber, those two jokes (McCarthy & Turd) were the ones that wanted to "move forward" without Brett. They will get their di@#s handed to them in a bloody towell just like they did in their last meeting. Make sure and look at Turd's face when the camera goes to him. He looks like he just molested a trick or treater.

I almost don't even want to identify myself as a Packer fan anymore. After hearing and reading such incredibly venomous and hateful things said about Favre the last couple of years, I find myself wanting to distance myself. People are reacting on emotion, and for many people that means their ugliest side comes out. It's not rational, and I don't want to be associated with the mean-spirited and spiteful attitude in Packer country these days. So the Packer/Favre relationship dissolved, and he wanted to keep playing. It's NOT the end of the world, it's just football people. He's not supposed to live his life as he desires? Oh no, first and foremost, all of you spiteful fans should be satisfied and he should have stopped playing despite his own desire to play again. I don't think so. That's not fair, not rational....get a life, everyone, and grow up. I never would have foreseen saying this, but I almost hope the Vikings win, simply because so many Packer fans are being world-class jerks and babies.

I'm glad to be rid of Favre. If we held onto him for another two more years we likely would have lost Rodgers to another team. Despite what anyone says Rodgers is a top 5 QB in the NFL and only has time to grow with this young offense. If Rodgers is signed as the franchise QB, which I imagine he will be, I can see him comming close to the same numbers as Favre with the expection of interceptions.

What McCarthy meant, but never explained after his meeting with Brett, is that Thompson told him that his intention all along was to be rid of Favre. McCarthy was out to save his own A** and didn't give a rats A** about the team. Thompson came in and immediately began working to get Favre to retire. He didn't want him to leave for just the reason we are seeing now. He knew there was a good chance he was wrong and the Pack would pay for it if Brett ever returned to Lambeau. Tell me, why was it we got rid of Sherman? Oh yea, Thompson had a better choice, McCarthy.

Favre put himself above the team and thought he could do whatever he wanted. Watch, Favre is having a great first half. Wait until late November/December hits. He'll be burnt out mentally and physically. What will the viqueen fans say then? Lastly, as long as cross-dresser Brad Childress is coach, the queens won't get near let alone win a SB. That being said, I hope the man gets a life time contract and keeps Favre around until he's 50.

C'mon people. Win, lose or draw, we'll see Favre shake many Green Bay player's hands. Yeah, I'm a Viking fan, but Favre deserves the respect from Green Bay..he's earned it many times over. History will tell a long story about Brett and the Green Bay Packers with maybe not even a slight mention of Minnesota. As for tomorrow, I think Minnesota will come away with the victory...but if not, I'm quite sure they will win the division. No score prediction here, just the sweet smell of victory. Enjoy!

Should Favre have retired a Packer?......maybe, but he didn't. Whatever the true reason is for him coming back.......who cares? He loves to play football, let's watch him while he can. I can understand losing a great player to another team and it is a bit odd to see him in purple, but I don't think Brett is betraying any Packer fans......again, he loves to play football. The days are fading where a player stays with a team their whole career. Get over it and respect the man for the player that he was and is.
To post #18, I knew I would eventually see someone make a comment about the Vikings only being better because there are Packer players (former) now on the roster........I suppose the Packer's roster has players that have only been Packers their whole career? .........oops, nope.......in that case, the Packers are only good because of the Colts(Matt Giordano), Seahawks(Ahman Green), Eagles(Al Harris), Steelers(John Kuhn), Dolphins(Donald Lee), Ravens(Derrick Martin), Rams(Ryan Pickett & Brandon Chillar), and Raiders(Charles Woodson).
My Dad is a Packer's fan and me a Viking. We were at the game when Favre broke the touchdown record. Those who stood and cheered wore green AND purple......and there weren't many that did not stand ..........those are fans, true fans.
Yes, I will be disappointed if the Vikes lose tomorrow........I am hoping for it to be a great game and it should be!
    GO VIKES!

I remember all the crap about how Favre should retire and he is all washed up from 2005 on. And ESPN along with players from other teams said he is done and needs to retire. He owned the NFC for the better of almost 2 decades. Now Minnisota has him and 17 yrs of Jealousy comes out. When GB wins and the circus is over it will be sweet. Next year MIn will be looking for a franchise QB and back to the same meri go round coach qb wr shuffle for MIn. It will be nice to hear, after the season is done, how it was the refs and how calls didn't come their way. EVERY TEAM GETS CRAP CALLS. What is MIn excuse going to be when they don't go to the SB this year??? When Moss was there they were cry babies then too.
