Tomlin motivates with Denver’s No. 1 message

PITTSBURGH (AP)—The more coach Mike Tomlin keeps talking about it, the more agitated his players get.

Exactly the response Tomlin wants from his Pittsburgh Steelers.

Tomlin keeps referring to the Broncos as having “the world’s best defense,” a reference to Denver’s spot atop the NFL team yardage statistics. He mentioned it during the weekly team meeting. Before practice on Wednesday. Before practice on Thursday. And he’ll likely keep saying it until game time Monday.

“We’ve heard coach Tomlin say it 1,000 times already this week,” quarterback Ben Roethlisberger(notes) said. “They’re a great defense, a big challenge for us … an awesome challenge.”

By constantly reminding that the Broncos (6-1) are playing better statistically than the Steelers (5-2), Tomlin is trying to motivate both his offense and his defense. He wants his offense determined to prove it can move the ball in Denver, and his defense mad that it’s no longer No. 1.

“They’ve put in a very aggressive style of defense,” Steelers offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said. “They changed to a system very much like ours and Baltimore’s. They’ve got the personnel to run it right now.”

The Steelers were the NFL’s best defense statistically the past two seasons, but they’re No. 8 this season. They’re No. 1 against the run, but are 16th against the pass, which is dragging down their overall ranking.

“When you prepare for a team like this, it’s like playing a division team, like a Baltimore,” safety Troy Polamalu(notes) said. “It’s always defense challenging defense. It’s an important goal in every game for us: As a defense, we always want to outplay the other defense.”

The Broncos didn’t do that during a 30-7 loss Sunday to Baltimore, which allows Tomlin to also sell this to his players: The Broncos are determined not to have another letdown in a game that potentially could prove important when the AFC playoff seeding is determined.

“I just think the Denver Broncos ran into a buzzsaw,” Tomlin said.

What the Steelers defense might run into is a Broncos offense that looks much different than it did against Baltimore.

When Broncos coach Josh McDaniels was an assistant coach with New England, the Patriots had success against Pittsburgh with spread-type formations that forced Polamalu to play deep coverage and didn’t allow the Steelers to blitz as much.

The Broncos had trouble pass protecting for quarterback Kyle Orton(notes) against Baltimore, and the Steelers are capable of bringing the same kind of pressure the Ravens did. If the Broncos spread it out at times, Orton can get rid of the ball quicker and perhaps lessen the intensity of the Steelers’ pass rush.

“He doesn’t take sacks,” Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau said of Orton, the former Bears quarterback. “He doesn’t throw interceptions. He’s very good at getting the right play. He’s a veteran, and you’re not going to confuse him.”

Of course, the Steelers will try to do exactly that.

Linebacker James Harrison(notes) believes the Steelers will be ready for whatever the Broncos do.

“It’s really whatever coach LeBeau feels works for that game, for that opponent,” Harrison said. “Some games we might rush a little more and there are quarters and games where we might not blitz at all. That’s part of being a linebacker in coach LeBeau’s defense. Rush the passer and drop into coverage, that’s part of the whole package.”

Just as Orton probably must remain patient and wait to take advantage of whatever the Steelers give him, Roethlisberger understands he can’t be too eager to go downfield with safety Brian Dawkins(notes) and cornerback Champ Bailey(notes) waiting to make plays.

While Roethlisberger has been the NFL’s most-sacked quarterback since entering the NFL in 2004, his ability to improvise when his pass protection breaks down has repeatedly created big plays. Roethlisberger also has been successful running the no-huddle, which the Ravens used on 31 plays against Denver.

“It changes the tempo, it keeps defenses on their heels,” wide receiver Hines Ward(notes) said. “It’s a matter of wanting to get into a speeded-up tempo. We hop into it to try to get some things going. Will we use it? I don’t know. But we have it—every week, every game, the package is in.”

Well I don't know about all of the broncos h8ers but I do know one thing. The broncos have dynamic recievers in this offense and if orton doesn't start throwing it up to them once in a while he will be finding a new home at the end of the season and the broncos will be trading up for bradford or mccoy. I have been a life time broncos fan so its good to see the defense turn around and to all you haters, the steelers haven't faced the greatest offenses either. I am excited for this game it should be great! GO BRONCOS!

all pittsburgh has to do is stop allowing kickoff and punt returns for touchdowns this week and its a sure thing! take away those, the last couple of weeks, and we have a show of strength. theres only 5 teams that even hav a shot at the superbowl this year. pats colts stains broncs and us. i really like our chances! dick lebeau will have orton shaking! troy will have an int. we will have 1 fumble recovery and as long as moore doesnt fumble and ben doesnt fumble it should be an easy game really. sorry doubters! we win

Vinnie, it doesn't matter how "badly" the Ravens got to the Vikings, THEY DIDN'T GET THE JOB DONE. The Vikings still won, 33-31. Beating someone up, defensively is one thing, but it's a whole different story if you fail to get the job done, and the Ravens failed to get the job done. Check your final scores before either you or that mastewa character post anything.

the Steelers will win, Denver can't be as good as the Vikings and the steelers won by 10.The defense puts pressure on the QB the first half and then Big Ben goes no huddle for half the 3rd and all the 4th, Denvers done, in their house. 31-10

Mike p I think what mastewa is saying is that the ravens kicked the crap out of the vikings and then we played them and won.I watched the vikings ravens game living close to Bmore I only get them and the skins it really sucks.Ravens played very physical and I guarantee the vikings were hurting after the game. Stop bashing him for what he wrote it is correct. He is hoping that that trend continues and we beat denver and cincy back to back.See they play cincy this week and we play them next week. You called him a dumbass for his post yet you seem to be the one not understanding his logic. Go steelers hope our secondary can stop orton.

This will be a great game, I'm going with my buddy hopefully the denver fans don't get too rowdy after we lay the smackdown on 'em. I've been to 3 steelers games at mile high & we lost them all so it'll be fun to walk out of the stadium a winner for a change.

My wife was making fun of the purple and yellow @#$%ot uniforms and the season ticket holders that were sitting next to us left their seats. That would never happen in pittsburgh.

Ravens beat up both the Vikes & Broncos right before the Steelers played them.

Ravens are playing the Bengals this weekend, Steelers play Bengals after Broncos.

Heres to the Ravens beating up the Bengals this weekend.

Broncos have been way overrated in 2009.

Steelers are focused for big Monday Night Win!

Regain the top defensive spot? They're 8th, Denver is first. Boy, you win 6 Superbowls and you assume you're the best team every season? The Broncos are better than the Steelers this season, hands down. I don't expect any of you to come eat crow afetr Monday night, but at least we won't have to hear from you at all. Front runners.

    Broncos 20-17.
