Bengals can take control of AFC North

CINCINNATI (AP)—Ray Lewis(notes) took aim and a delivered a jarring hit intended to do more than break up a pass. In his bruising style, the Ravens linebacker was trying to wrap up a win.

Didn’t work out that way.

When Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco(notes)—one of Lewis’ longtime friends— smacked the ground and lost his tiger-striped helmet, a yellow flag landed at the point of impact. The high hit drew a 15-yard penalty that aided Cincinnati’s drive for a last-minute touchdown and a 17-14 win in Baltimore last month.

Ochocinco wasn’t down for long, popping to his feet in a matter of seconds. By contrast, the Ravens (4-3) are the ones trying to get back up as they head into the rematch Sunday against the Bengals (5-2), who have a two-week window of opportunity to take control of the AFC North.

“They’ve got a lot on the line, but we’ve got a lot more on the line,” Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer(notes) said.

Cincinnati’s win on Oct. 11 completed a stunning stretch. The Bengals ran off three straight wins over division opponents—Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Baltimore—by pulling out games with last-minute drives. In Baltimore, Palmer led the Bengals 80 yards with the help of three Ravens penalties that accounted for 30 yards and a couple of first downs.

When he found Andre Caldwell(notes) open for a 20-yard touchdown catch with 22 seconds left, the Bengals were atop the division. They can take control of it by beating the Ravens and then winning in Pittsburgh (5-2) next week, leaving them 5-0 in division play.

“I see this as a two-game season,” Ochocinco said, “from the standpoint that with a win this week and next week in Pittsburgh, it’s really setting us up for a playoff berth. And after that, continuing to win and be successful throughout the season could really give us a bye week.”

Ochocinco was referring to the playoffs, of course.

Baltimore knows it can’t let that happen if it wants to reach the playoffs again. The Bengals are rested, coming off their bye. The Ravens have their swagger back, coming off a 30-7 win over previously unbeaten Denver.

This one means more than most.

“We know who’s on the schedule,” Ravens safety Ed Reed(notes) said. “We know what’s at stake. They know what’s at stake. So, let’s go.”

Reed returned an interception 52 yards for a touchdown in that game last month, and the Ravens were in position to close it out after Ray Rice(notes) turned a short pass into a 48-yard touchdown and a 14-10 lead. The Bengals failed to get a first down, and Joe Flacco(notes) had a chance to finish them off.

Mark Clayton(notes) ran free down the left sideline on a third-down play, but Flacco overthrew the pass. If it’s on the mark, the Bengals are finished.

Instead, they got another chance and pulled it out—with the help of Lewis’ rattling hit on Ochocinco on a high pass that the off-balance receiver couldn’t catch. His helmet tumbled off his head after Lewis flattened him.

A few days later, the NFL fined Lewis $25,000 for that hit and for kicking a Bengals player earlier in the game. He’s still stewing over it.

“You don’t go helmet to helmet, you’re running toward the ball, you make a clean hit and then you get penalized for it,” Lewis said. “So then you can ask yourself: Are you going to slow down the way you play, or are you going to keep playing football the way you know how to play football?”

Ochocinco knows the answer.

“That’s the way football is played,” said the receiver, who counts Lewis as a mentor. “Ray knows that. I know that. If I was to catch him slipping in midair, I’d try to take his head off, too. Then I’d help him up and tell him, ‘I love you.’ You all know how our relationship is. He’s the closest person I have as a father figure in the NFL besides coach (Marvin Lewis).

“That’s the way it is. That’s the way it’s going to be this Sunday. If he gets a chance to hit me again, I hope he’ll do the same thing.”

This time, the Ravens need more than one big hit. Another loss to the Bengals would leave them 0-2 against Cincinnati and make them a long shot for the division title.

“So what we have to do, our mindset now, is we have to put it back on the even playing ground,” receiver Derrick Mason(notes) said. “We have to go down there and figure out a way to pick up a win in their house.”

Now fans, what if big Ben hasn't got his head cleared from the woman that is after him, hey things like that weights very heavy and lets say Denver beat the Steelers, the year could very well be over for both the Ravens and the Steelers. Big test for the Bengals after the bye week. It should be a good game to see which team is more hungry. Both teams are pretty even in their running and passing game. May be a slight edge to the Ravens defense and special team. It all boils down to which team has less penalties, less turnovers, better red zone executions. Expect a tough slugfest. Ravens is in a must win situation. Bengals will win if Benson can have his 100+ yards game and let Flacco have his short game.

The Bengals and the Ravens game is going to be great, Im a Steelers fan ,so I'll be watching closely to see if Baltimore can knock off the Bengals. Expect the fines in this one too. If Palmer can sit in the pocket,Bengals win. Flush him out of there, make him run. After the win in Denver Monday night the Steelers will be in first place.

Joe Kay, what exactly is control? Let's say the Bengals win the next two weeks. At best, the Bengals will have a two-game lead in the AFC North, should the Steelers lose Monday night. If the Steelers win also, it's a one-game lead with seven weeks left in the season.

Ochocinco's near-sighted view of the season is problematic in that this is NOT a two-game season. It's still a NINE game season. His words, while emphasizing the importance of winning division games, de-emphasize the importance of not looking past the rest of your schedule. Talking about playoff bye-weeks in Week 8 is a mindset for disaster.

Truth is, the Bengals have probably peaked already this season while other teams are getting better. The Ravens are coming off a bye week and will be hungry, while the Steelers are certainly better than they were in Week 3. This week could very well be the beginning of a downward spiral for the Bengals, as it would be interesting to see how losing two important games might affect the team's current state of euphoria. The Bengals are an emotionally fragile group, and I certainly can see them falling off their own bandwagon at 5-4.

'm not much into bad talking teams,, It "WILL" be a tough game for sure... Here's how it pans out... First, the Ravens have a tough time coming from behind late in the game.. The Bengals defense will need to hold the Raven offense down and pressure Flacco and company into 3 and out's...
The running of Benson and Scott show will be key to keeping the Ravens linebackers in place... Gives Carson and a host of recievers all the room they want to go downfield!!! 4th quarter Ravens will be in desperation mode and they take too many chances and become accident prone.

    WHO DEY!!!

Brady wears a pink tu-tu. I recently heard a comment of players who could play in any era, clealy fraidy cannot. Could he play if Bubba Smith, and Deacon Jones bearing down on him? I do not like joey porter but he is correrct. Reguardless on the pats winning, no one outside of new england and little kids have respect for them. NO RESPECT FOR THE PINK PATS. Even the bengals have respect for a hard hitting game, and I respect them for it. Go Ravens,

I agree with you to some extent purple and black attack. The refs have been awful, but they all haven't gone against the Ravens. One thing I will never be able to figure out is why Trevor NEVER gets a holding call against him.

Regardless, this should be a great game, and I think that having Gaither back (and Odom out) will be the difference in this game.

    What's our name...RAVENS.

Lewis' hit wasn't the only penalty during that drive, there was a pass interference penalty that,if caught ,would have resulted in an 8 yard reception and a 4th and 8 decision for the Bengals. It was a bone-head play and not necessary. Also, if you watch the film, during the same play an offensive lineman has his arm wrapped around Trevor Pryce's throat. Obvious holding not called which would have negated the play and caused a replay. The officials this year are pathetic. It doesn't matter who is playing, the officials suck. Special penalties for special players? Tom brady needs to change his uniform to a tu-tu . he tells the refs to throw a flag and they do. ridiculous. Can you see Bradshaw,Montana or Unitas doing that,of course not. I am a die hard Raven's fan, but I respect Palmer and OchoCinco, they play the game the wa it's supposed to be played just like Ray-Ray and the flacman.
