Not-so-special Steelers scrambling for playoffs

PITTSBURGH (AP)—The coach is edgy and unhappy. The quarterback is dealing with another concussion, his fourth since 2006. The defense isn’t the same with two of its best players injured and out. Every kickoff is creating anxiety. Every game is becoming an adventure.

Has it really been only 10 months since the Pittsburgh Steelers won the Super Bowl?

The Steelers won’t say so, but they expected to be cruising toward the playoffs by now, with all but two starters back from an experienced, proven team that won its second Super Bowl in four seasons. Their schedule is much softer than last season’s, with no Colts, Patriots, Cowboys, Giants or Eagles to be found and a healthy mix of Lions, Browns and Raiders.

Instead, they’re 6-4 and locked in an unanticipated struggle merely to make the playoffs. Injuries, special teams breakdowns, the surprising Bengals and a post-Super Bowl letdown appear to be conspiring to torment a team that looked to be championship-ready only a few weeks ago.

The Steelers still can salvage a season in which they’ve lost two in a row, including an inexplicable 27-24 overtime loss in Kansas City on Sunday. But they’re running out of time—and, with key starters such as Troy Polamalu(notes), Aaron Smith(notes) and Chris Kemoeatu(notes) injured and out, they’re running out of players.

“If we address our ills and really don’t blink in the face of adversity and let that guide our energy and decision making, continue to do the things well that we’re doing well, we should be fine and should be able to correct those issues,” coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday. “In the short term? Uncomfortable? Absolutely.”

Edgy, too, a word Tomlin used several times during a news conference that lasted nearly twice as long as usual. And for good reason.

The Steelers have won 10 games or more six times since 2001, so they’re hardly ready to give up on their season. AFC North leader Cincinnati (7-3) showed its vulnerability by losing at Oakland, and only one of Pittsburgh’s remaining opponents has a winning record.

However, the Steelers are going into Sunday’s game at Baltimore (5-5) with yet another big worry, franchise quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s(notes) latest concussion. He has been their best player all season, and they shudder to think what might happen if he goes down, especially with backup Charlie Batch(notes) out with a broken left wrist.

Four years ago, the Steelers were 7-5 and looked to be in worse shape than they are now, yet they rallied to win eight consecutive games and the Super Bowl. But while that team was confident and combative, this one appears confused and uncertain.

The four kickoff return touchdowns they’ve allowed in five games are undermining everyone’s confidence. The coaches wonder why the special teams players lack the pride and commitment to not allow such breakdowns; the players wonder why the coaches can’t correct it.

There’s also starting to be finger-pointing, something the Steelers almost never do—and, as right tackle Willie Colon(notes) said, something they can’t do.

Players on both sides of the ball are unhappy with some playcalling, especially a third-down toss sweep by backup running back Mewelde Moore(notes) that lost 3 yards and ended the Steelers’ only overtime possession in Kansas City.

“I’d do it again,” Tomlin said.

He might be the only person in Pittsburgh who would.

Some players want to run the ball more; some want to blitz more. Other players are raising questions about team unity. Tomlin personally accepted the blame for the Chiefs loss, saying it’s on him to have his team better prepared.

“The difference between winning and losing is so little you’ve got to be on top of your game (every week),” running back Rashard Mendenhall(notes) said.

While the Steelers are No. 1 defensively, just as they were the last two seasons, they’re clearly not the same without Polamalu, one of the NFL’s best players. He’s missed five full games and all but a few plays of a sixth with two left knee injuries, and the Steelers lost four of them. He isn’t expected to play in Baltimore.

The Steelers also gave up some of their renowned toughness when Smith went down with a season-ending rotator cuff injury in mid-October. The secondary, especially without Polamalu, is ordinary, allowing seven pass plays of 30 yards or more. Linebacker LaMarr Woodley(notes) isn’t making the game-changing plays he often made last season, and nose tackle Casey Hampton(notes) isn’t the shutdown run-stopper he’s often been.

The Steelers also have forced only 14 turnovers, fewer than half as many as league leader New Orleans (29).

Offensively, the Steelers keep shifting away from the build-around-the-run philosophy that has been the franchise’s foundation since the 1960s. That’s requiring Roethlisberger to shoulder an increasing amount of the workload, and Mendenhall often seems to be overlooked at key moments despite being on pace for an 1,100-yard season.

Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes(notes), blanketed in almost every game, has made only one touchdown catch and none in nine games.

Still, Tomlin said, “We’re capable of moving the ball on anyone.”

Tomlin is referring to the Ravens’ game as Redemption Sunday—though the Steelers will need more than one good week to redeem this season.

“We’re preparing with an edge because we’d better,” Tomlin said. “The situation dictates it.”

So does the calendar.

Squeeze--You're exactly right. I've seen copies of the shadow government's top secret mind control experiments (psychOps) and the CIA's ultra classified Area 51 project. The ultimate objective is to ensure yet another Super Bowl victory for the Steelers!! Specially enhanced reconnisance images of the black helicopters operating in remote areas of the Western US clearly show Steeler insignias on the fuselage just below the main rotors.... to be continued.......

Tomlin needs to get on some people's butts. I do not think that an unproven quarterback is the answer. Tommy Maddox did okay coming from arena football for a while. I hear that Kordell is playing that game, so at least, his passing skills are intact. He has played well for the Steelers, and he knows how fast the game is.

The defence is short a couple players to injury. Fine! The other blokes are not making minimum wage. They are getting paid well to play a game and their best effort is expected. Timmons and Harrison have to stop giving up in the middle of plays. What makes Harrison a dominant linebacker is when he will not stop until the play is over. I do not expect him to get a sack every time he rushes, but I do expect that more times than not, he will be in the same area code as the quarterback so that it is not comfortable for the quarterback.

Hood has to learn some new moves. He is a rookie and learning, but he has to realize that this is the NFL not college. The other teams study game films, and if you do the same move all the time, then you are the one that gets beat. He is in a tough spot because the Steelers do not normally force rookies to be a big part. Injuries change that.

The team has to go back to basics. A running game is what has always made the Steelers great. A one-two punch of Parker/Mendenhall should keep defences off balance enough. Wallace has to put out an effort. Yeah he fumbled one, but that was then, and this is now. Show your talent.

Special Teams need some help. Maybe the key is to focus on contain and limit to get some confidence.

    Just my thoughts....Go Steelers

I would call that the Yankee effect....I KNOW their are people loathe yankee's more than support their team. I really just feel sorry for them. lets keep the big picture in view. LOVE MY STEELERS....TRIED AND TRUE...LETS PUT THE HEAD DOWN AND PLAY THROUGH DIVERSITY AND PLAY YOUR BEST....thats all we ask for!!

Win ,lose or draw the steelers are my team always have been always will- even though i think somethings are wrong with coaches and players i'll do what i 've always done sit back and watch the games because in the end i know the franchise will overcome! hopefully things will come together before season ends and as history has shown in the NFL the hot teams at the right time at the end of the season make the most noise in the playoffs and as every true steelers fan knows the team has made me proud more than it has disappointed me ! so i say to all true steeler fans sit back and enjoy the ride because HERE WE GO 7!

Ultimately, the kind of performances and problems the Steelers (and I've been a Fan for 30+ yrs) are having now are not "Fixed" (as in a single event), they're SOLVED (as in a Process) beginning with The F---in' Coach... It's HIS job to find a key point and SHOVE... thus starting a turn-around that builds off of its own momentum. I'm not going to claim to know where that first Shove should be, or WHO might be the recip[ient of it, as I freely admit to NOT being an NFL Coach... it takes Skill, and THAT is HIS JOB, last I checked! O.K.. there are injuries... there is also more than enough Talent around to overcome them, but as an earlier Commentor noted: NOT when these guys are coming off the field SMILING after a Loss! Mr. Tomlin, it's time to get both YOUR ASS and YOUR TEAM'S in GEAR!!!

Ben better start throwing to his line backers more or he's going to be eating more turf. He trys to hard to make big plays happen down field when there's none to be had. He gives up on the shorter plays that can turn into big yards. Without Palamalu, the defense is Average. This weekend will be the live or die for the Steeler's, I'm afraid!

I'm sticking with my team, thick 'n thin.

    1. As I recall, in the Noll and Cowher era, the Steelers were a BIG third quarter team. They very often played to a draw in the first half, then came out of the locker room to crush people. Now it's the opposite. The other guys pour it on down the stretch. Sunday was the third game this year (along with Bears and first Bengals) where the Steelers dominated in the first half, then ran out of gas to lose. Are the Steelers that old?

    2. Has anyone else noticed that after important losses (to Cincy, costing the division; to a bad KC, maybe costing the playoffs), many of the Steelers have left the field smiling? After one of the early season losses, one reporter noted that in the locker room there wasn't any indication that they'd lost. These are red flags. Show me a contented loser, and I'll show you a loser.

and might I add take a look at Yankees fans, all the things they do which is negative and why the whole world hates them. Now sit back and watch Pit fans... see anything similar? Thats why many people are starting to hate Pit , there are other reaons but really much of it is because of the bad fans. Its not just there tho those bad people who ruin sports for so many others are in all sports, my best friend loves Pit and has his whole life but hes pretty good about being honest like when they get calls for them which they do alot even in superbowls. I'm honest to the bone about all my teams but that indeed is rare these days it seems.

Tomlin says this loss is on him, EVERY loss and victory is his. There is an old saying that goes: "What doesn't come out in the wash, will come out in the rinse." Well now we are seeing the rinse spin out some of the issues that have been hidden. The Steelers will be darn lucky to sniff the playoffs this year. I still say that the league is under suspicion of being fixed. There is way too much money in this sport not to attract shady people. Years ago there was a belief that the Mafia controlled everything but the stock market, I think they might have had an effect on that. As for the 2009 Steelers, I think we may be witnessing the early stages of the Steelers demise. Even in coach Noll's worst season, there was no sniping by the players. There may be a good reason that coach Cower walked out on a winning team, and that won't come out for awhile. It's hard watching this team play the way they are playing now. There is no fire in the eyes, very little desire is displayed, and hunger is a has been, not a want to. It looks like it's time for a major shake-up from top to bottom. It is said that a great musician that misses 8 hours of practice, that he can tell, if he misses 2 days of practice, his Conduvtor notices, and if he misses 3 days of practice, the audiophile will notice. I see a lot of the team looking like they took a few weeks off this season! Just my 2 cents.
