Jets’ Ryan to take bigger role on offense

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP)—Rex Ryan is going on the offensive for the New York Jets.

That means Mark Sanchez(notes) will be hearing a lot more from his head coach from now on.

“I need to be more of the game manager than probably what I even realized before,” Ryan said Monday. “There’s been some people here that have been critical of that, and it’s probably more accurate than I wanted to believe.”

Ryan has worked almost exclusively with the defense since becoming head coach in January, leaving the offense to coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and special teams to Mike Westhoff. Ryan now will take a greater role in the offense and try to be a more balanced head coach.

“It’s not a threatening deal or whatever,” Ryan said. “It’s just something that my role needs to be this, and I think that’s my responsibility. I oversee the whole football team. I really need to start doing that.”

His No. 1 goal is to try to help Sanchez work on his ball security, something that has plagued the rookie all season.

“That was my challenge to him today—is let’s get better at protecting the football and understanding that sometimes it’s OK to throw the football away,” Ryan said. “You’re not sure about that completion, then sometimes it’s better just to throw the ball away and punt the football. That’s what he has to understand.”

The Jets (4-6) have lost six of seven after a 31-14 defeat at New England on Sunday in which Sanchez threw four interceptions and lost a fumble. Sanchez has thrown 16 interceptions and lost three fumbles this season, but Ryan said he’ll stick with the rookie as his starting quarterback.

“I just think that he’s not going to get better unless he gets out and plays,” Ryan said.

Ryan insisted his decision to get more involved on offense is not a slight to Schottenheimer or quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh. He said Schottenheimer will continue to run the offense.

“I’m here to advance our plan,” Ryan said, adding that he’ll be “standing shoulder-to-shoulder” with Schottenheimer during practices and games to help Sanchez get a better grasp of what needs to be done.

“I have to be demanding of that because right now, that’s not getting done to my satisfaction or this football team’s satisfaction,” Ryan said.

He said he’ll continue making the defensive calls in the meantime, which caused someone to ask if he might then have too much on his plate.

“There’s always a lot on my plate,” the hefty coach said without missing a beat.

Sanchez has had lots to digest as the fifth overall draft pick out of Southern California in April. After making just 16 college starts, he has shown signs of being the franchise quarterback the organization still believes he can be. But Sanchez has also had some brutal performances this season.

There was the four-turnover game at New Orleans in Week 4, and his five-interception game against Buffalo two weeks later. His 16 interceptions are second only to the 18 Chicago’s Jay Cutler(notes) has thrown, and his 61.1 quarterback rating ranks above only Oakland’s JaMarcus Russell(notes) and Cleveland’s Derek Anderson(notes)—both of whom have been benched.

“It’s clearly not just Mark’s fault,” Ryan said. “There’s a reason he was named the starter, that I thought he gave us the best opportunity to win, and I still feel that.”

The players have echoed their coach’s comments by defending their young quarterback.

“We still support Mark,” wide receiver Braylon Edwards(notes) said. “Mark, he’s still young, and he’s going through some growing pains. But in order to help a rookie out, you need to be flawless. We’re professionals, and we need to be the best at our positions to help him out. That’s our fault, and that’s where we’re letting him down.”

Right tackle Damien Woody(notes) said the veteran players must figure out what they can do to help Sanchez improve.

“We’ve been around the block and understand how it is,” he said. “We like the kid. Is he making a ton of mistakes? Yeah, but we win as a team and lose as a team. Nobody’s perfect in this locker room.”

NOTES: Ryan said CB Donald Strickland(notes) suffered a concussion when he was hit hard by Patriots tackle Mark LeVoir(notes) on a block. “His availability obviously will be in the doctors’ hands,” Ryan said. … CB Dwight Lowery(notes) has a high ankle sprain, and Ryan said he’s doubtful against Carolina on Sunday. Lito Sheppard(notes) could start in Lowery’s place opposite Darrelle Revis(notes).

he just wants to get close to dirty sanchez cuz he knows where the hotdogs are on the sidelines.

give me a break - that was a horrible move by the jets to get that fat slob to coach the overated new york jets.

    sanchez is not that good

Wait, did you say bigger ROLL as in cinnamon roll or role?? fat man just due cometh!!!

I am sorry but this fat mouth ba$tard ran his mouth too much when Jets had "Vicious" defense and were 3-0. We are going to put pressure on you , our defense is tough, they may have done that to tohers but they are not going to do that against us,... blah blah blah We are going to come at you and see how your QB likes it when he is on the ground etc etc etc

3-0 to 4-6, so after a 3-0 start thay went 1-6 over 7 game span. What a meltdown. Ryan and his rolls or roles, how about stop FCKNG rolilng over!!! HA ha ha!!

Get Danny Woodhead the ball moron!!!! he’s a beast, greene hasn’t done much and hasnt earned the 2nd string job, only had 1 good game against da raiders who suck. Rex runs his team by a popularity contest thats why he brought in a bunch of ex-ravens. Since sanchez is in a rut, you need to run the ball more and more. Greene had -1 yards rushing last game. TJ cant do all the rushing and to be frank, he doesn’t have the breakaway speed leon had that they miss. Woodhead can bust a 60 yard TD run any day. he runs a 4.4 forty some even say close to a 4.3. Word of advise Rex, Stop Playing Favorites and start playing people who produce and deserves to play.

Schottenheimer needs to go. His play book is terrible and play calling is bad. He needs to prepare a god damn offensive. F..k having a offensive of gameplan seeing they never work. I barely see the jets do slant passes, shotgun or wide spread runs, pitch plays, (I see failed screens). Schottenheimer needs to treat him like chad Pennington the little 5 yard dint passes. Mark is rhythm QB. Give Him Consistent play calling. 2 run plays and 1 pass play. Dint pass, run, run. The Chad Pennington drill

What would be ideal, is to have Ryan as a D Cord and Shanahan as a Head coach. Ryan's fiery persona is not suited for a head coach.

I figured out why Rex cried a week ago on TV, he finally realized he was coaching the New York Jets. I don't think that Rex is the right guy for our team. I think the Jets should have waited a year and picked up a guy named Bill Cowart. They could have named an interim coach or persuaded Cowart to come to New York. Why you ask? Cowart just fits in this team. His persona and his intelligence would have made this team a contender. He just fits, not Rex. The Jets have a good team but there is something missing and that is good decisions in the front office. This has plague the Jets since Woody took over maybe even before. But that would be before my time and I am not going to talk about that. As far as Mark goes, the Jets should have never started this guy this year. He should have stayed in college not for the Jets sake, but for his own. But he didn't. Though that is not the whole problem. Rex should have started Clemens and let Mark learn for a year or so. Now you have a quarterback that could have been great but will probably only be mediocre at best. He can’t even throw accurately at a consistent basis. He threw the football right to the Pats and his receiver was two yards away. This happens every game or he just plain misses his guy by a mile. This guy was no second coming of Christ and no Broadway Joe. He is Mark Sanchez, the rookie that should have been learning this year not trying to carry a team to the super bowl. Now he could be quite possibly be ruined forever. You can blame Rex or Sanchez like most people will because the coach and quarterback take all the blame all the time. I blame the front office for making bad decisions year in and year out.
