Bolts hope Giants victory carries over

SAN DIEGO (AP)—Philip Rivers(notes) doesn’t give much credence to the New York Giants’ losing streak, which he helped extend to four games.

All he really cares about is that his San Diego Chargers went on the road and came away with a solid victory, even if it wasn’t always pretty.

“I think it means a lot,” Rivers said Monday, a day after his 18-yard TD pass to Vincent Jackson(notes) with 21 seconds left rallied the Chargers to a 21-20 victory over the reeling Giants.

“It’s the type of game we hadn’t been able to win yet this year, on the road, against a really good team. I know that they’ve lost four straight now, but that was a really good football team we played. To win, and to really have to win in all three phases and have to lean on one another on both sides of the ball, and to get it done, it means a lot.”

It was the third straight win for San Diego, which at 5-3 is positioned to make a second-half run. At the very least, the Chargers will have to overtake the Denver Broncos in order to win their fourth straight AFC West title.

“I think it will carry over into this week, something we can build on as we prepare for another really tough NFC East opponent,” Rivers said.

Up next is a home game against the Philadelphia Eagles, who are coming off a 20-16 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

The Chargers will have plenty of things to work on this week, Rivers said. San Diego’s running game was practically nonexistent, receivers dropped passes and Rivers was intercepted twice.

“We’ve still got a ton of room for improvement,” Rivers said. “It wasn’t by any means our best game through and through; it was because of the way we won, but tons of areas to improve. If we all acknowledge that, we’ll get better.”

In the end, though, the Chargers wrenched the game away from the Giants.

Terrell Thomas(notes) intercepted Rivers and returned it 33 yards to the San Diego 4 with 3:14 remaining. A holding penalty moved the Giants back and San Diego forced them to settle for a field goal for just a six-point lead with two minutes to go.

Rivers was impressive in moving the Chargers 80 yards, capping the drive with his throw to the wide-open Jackson.

Outside linebacker Shawne Merriman(notes) had two more sacks as he continues to look stronger in his comeback from knee surgery that cost him virtually all of last season.

The Chargers have put together winning streaks in recent seasons, and Merriman hopes they’re hitting their stride now.

“We’ve got to put down our foot right now,” said Merriman, who ended the game by sacking Eli Manning(notes). Manning, of course, told the Chargers before the 2004 draft that he didn’t want them to take him with the No. 1 pick. They did anyway, then shipped him to New York for Rivers and three picks, one of which was the first-rounder in 2005 that the Chargers used on Merriman.

“If we put down our foot right now, we’re going to be in pretty good shape,” Merriman said. “Every game’s not going to go how you want it, but we can do our best to make sure it’s in our favor.”

I don't think L.T. is done, but he definitely needs to pick it up. Maybe they could have traded Chambers for a big full back like Michael Turner who could block for L.T. and make some damn holes. Cuz the O line is definitely not doing anything for him. But ultimately, it's up to L.T., and I think he's got enough fire left in him to break out the second half of the season. If L.T. gets on track--as he must--the Chargers have the best chance they've had in a long, long, time to take it deep into the playoffs and maybe all the way. Merriman and the "D" are improving every week, so I like what I see there. But right now, the Chargers are offensively pretty much one dimensional, without the brilliance of L.T. shining through. Oh, and did I mention what a stud Philip Rivers is?

Phillip Rivers will be drinking a beer and eating nachos on the sidelines after throwing his 5th TD late in the 3rd quarter.

    #230 Mauricio,
I'm sure you know the truth about what happened between Merrimen and Tila but you like to twist to truth or perhaps you convinced yourself of what you said is the truth. You are either ignorant or stupid. Either way it make no difference to me.

here is the chargers' turning point. it either goes up or down. this is a big game. NY has a secondary that will not stop the charger passing attack. the downside is jacobs can run all day long and when the TOP is not with the Chargers they usually don't win. Best of luck. I'll be there to witness a great game.

BTW Chambers lost his hands this year and the charger special teams really needs some help so it was a necessary move to release him sorry great guy but floyd and jackson are big and strong. the receiving core just got better in SD, believe it or not.

this should be a good game for the chargers to evaluate where they are at. As a charger fan, I'm not convinced that we are "rejuvenated" after beating the chiefs and the raiders. those 2 teams are just for filling the table. nothing more.
by the way, lt is not done. chargers o line hasn't opened any lane. if we had a pederson, he would have run into the wall... nothing more. 'nough said.

Um..... here's a good idea when you're in the red zone Chargers..... you might want to try throwing to Antonio Gates down there once in a while.

to bad aj smith doesn't read the comment because most of you are right about Turner ! the play calling doesn't make any sense. goal line formation and you call sprolles hes good at alot of things but that's not it! the d should be ripping it up with the blitz instead it seems like their napping . Making excuses every game is the worst thing someone [especially a coach ] can do!

chargers need a better game plan or new coach--only coach they should of got rid of was the receiver coach--a couple of years ago--that's the major screw up--now we have a conservative coach and no fire to win when it counts.L. T. IS ANYONE KEEPING TRACK OF HIS OFF SEASON TRAINING TO PREVENT INJURY?????? QQQQQQQHHH!!!

No Dan. They should not get rid of LT. What they need is a better FB to create gaps for LT to shoot thru. Ever since the Chargers got rid of Lo Neal, the run game hasn't been as good. Watch Tolbert and Hester. They get knocked back instead of moving the line forward. Yes, they can catch, but isn't that why they have LT and Sproles? Get some FB's that can block and watch the running game open up.
