Cardinals seek answers after another home loss

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP)—For much of their history the Arizona Cardinals haven’t had to deal with success.

Even after reaching the Super Bowl, they’re still figuring it out.

The Cardinals (4-3) followed one of their more memorable victories—a nationally televised road win over the New York Giants—with a mistake-filled 34-21 loss to the Carolina Panthers (3-4). One day later, coach Ken Whisenhunt struggled to explain what had happened to a team that had looked so formidable on national TV seven days earlier.

“You always are crossing bridges or facing obstacles as a football team in this league,” Whisenhunt said Monday. “Obviously, one for us is being able to play consistently after we’ve had some success.”

Whisenhunt said he planned to address the issue with the players on Monday. In the locker room, there was a mix of puzzlement and frustration.

Strong safety Adrian Wilson(notes), normally a go-to guy for the media, shook his head when approached by reporters.

“I ain’t got nothing polite to say, so I’d rather not say anything at all,” Wilson said.

Wide receiver Anquan Boldin(notes) said the Cardinals “let one go yesterday.”

“There’s no excuse for it,” he said. “Good teams win games that they’re supposed to win.”

Boldin re-aggravated a right ankle sprain against Carolina but said he hopes to play this week at Chicago.

From the Cardinals’ vantage point, the only good news coming out of Sunday was San Francisco’s loss at Indianapolis. That kept the Cardinals one game ahead of the 49ers in the feeble NFC West, where the four clubs are a combined 5-14 outside the division.

Otherwise, it was mostly bad news.

Start with six turnovers—all charged to quarterback Kurt Warner(notes), who had five interceptions, matching a career high, and also lost a fumble.

Whisenhunt gave the Panthers’ defense credit for making big plays, but he indicated the offense also deserved blame for the miscues.

“Regardless of what they were, six turnovers in a game is certainly unacceptable,” he said.

The loss left the Cardinals at 1-3 at University of Phoenix Stadium, where they went 8-2 a year ago, including two playoff victories.

The Cardinals thought they had established a true home-field advantage in their sparkling stadium in Glendale, west of Phoenix, but it hasn’t looked that way this year, with boo-birds occasionally greeting the Redbirds.

Even Arizona’s lone home win was shaky; the Cardinals blew a 21-point lead against Houston and had to repel the Texans three times at the 1-yard line in the final minute to preserve a 28-21 victory on Oct. 11.

“All the games that we’ve played here, I felt like we should’ve played a lot better,” Boldin said. “But we can’t do anything about it now. Just move on and play better the upcoming weeks at home.”

Whisenhunt has no explanation for his team’s poor play at home.

“I’m surprised and disappointed, I think more so for our fans because of the great support they have given us,” he said. “We haven’t lived up to our end of the deal.”

Given their struggles at home, the Cardinals may be relieved to visit Chicago this week. The Cardinals are 3-0 on the road, with victories at Jacksonville, Seattle and the New York Giants.

The Cardinals have four home games left—against Seattle, Minnesota, St. Louis and Green Bay. After Sunday’s clunker, the Cardinals aren’t likely to take any of those games for granted.

The loss to the Panthers evoked memories of a 35-14 home drubbing by Minnesota last season. Many chalked it up to a letdown because the Cardinals had clinched the division title a week earlier.

Sunday’s loss seemed more puzzling, because it came after three straight victories. The Cardinals fell behind 28-7 at halftime and couldn’t pull closer than 10 points the rest of the way.

Whisenhunt dismissed a suggestion that the Cardinals need to play with more emotion, although he conceded that “our team plays better when we have a chip on our shoulder.”

Whisenhunt said it’s natural for teams to play with varying degrees of emotion during a 16-game grind. But he said technique and discipline should be consistent.

“I think we have made progress here with that,” he said. “Obviously, we are not there yet.”

Steelers 23, you are a moron... It took and amazing throw and catch to beat the supposed "sorry ass" Cardinals. Congrats to you favorite team on the win ,but quit acting like the Cardinals didn't belong in the game idiot...

Big cards fan but not of warner. He still thinks he can outrun Defensive Ends while carrying the ball with one hand, give me a break. Instead of taking a sack he throws the ball up in the middle of the field with 4 DB's nearby. His turnovers are because he makes very bad plays trying to make something happen. I'm waiting for Leinert to step up now, his partying days are over and he looked very good in the preseason. I hope we make the transition this year to Leinert and if it doesn't work out we can maybe trade up in the draft to get another QB.

If someone like Brees was on the Cards, OMG.

The Carolina was a revenge game -throw in the 6 turnovers and it was a tough game to win.

But here are some things Whiz has to realize:
    1) the offense is a very slow footed unit and with Boldin limping around it's probably the slowest in the NFL- much more speed required here
    2) play Beanie and stop worrying about his fumbling
    3) the only important game the Cardinals will play is the 2nd 49er game -must win that one
    4) review the grades on Gerald Hayes- I think he's a weak link
    5) give the offensive tackles some help
    6) try new players on defense for extended play such as Branch and Watson & reserve LBs
    7) Dansby's got to raise his game to another level-he's not a pass defender
    8) A-dub has got to get a lot smarter
    9) the tight end has got to catch at least 4 passes a game
    10) can the kick returner break one for a change

some ups and downs. that's how cardinals football goes. i'm sticking with warner anytime. leirnart hasn't done anything to prove he should be pulling the strings for the cards. we'll figure it out eventually.

As a Card fan, I am use to the ups and downs during the season. There are two things I took away from the Panthers game. 1- Warner is washed up. He has not posted the numbers deserving of a starting QB. 2- The Cards have a running game. Too bad they chose not to stay with the run. Well's is on the verge of breaking big plays, but is held back by the offense. We had a chance early in this game until Warner decided to take over and press himself into mistakes. It is time to make a change to Matt. He can keep the defense honest by running first and opening up passing lanes the way the offense is designed. Dink and Dunk days need to come to an end. We are too good of a football team to allow a blow out at home and not address the root cause of the problem.

I love the Cardinals and see great improvement from new people like Campbell, Wells and Branch among others. The only thing of caution right now is the defensive backfield.
    1) the loss of DRC
    2) don't like McFadden; he's used to playing with a big pass rush and when it's not there he's face guarding- could have been called 3 times
    3) the dropped TD pass is alarming- Giants' receiver was so open- looked like the Indy game.

But a win is a win and a great potential tie-breaker with the Giants down the road. The big thing is the Giant game could have turned into a loss like it would have in the previous 50 years -but it didn't .

All you morons talking smack about the Cards are really showing your lack of knowledge. This team will win 12 games this year, and probably challange again for the NFC champship again. Whiz wishes he was back in Pitt? He just took a hapless franchise to the superbowl, and almost one it. Took a highlight catch, and unreal interception return to do it. Props to the Steelers, because they won. Dont trash the Cards though as they are for real. Number 1 ranked D against run and number 11 overall. Best receivers in the game, hall of fame QB, and a developing running game. This team gets the running game going, and they will be playing the Saints in the NFC championship game. Yes..They are that good. The city of phoenix or Glendale should erect statues of Warner and Whisenhunt!

the Wiz is now the Was...the O-line sucks fire rush grim, he had 3 years to get that line in place. we have two good backs that cant get across the line. DRC and Mcfadden are the worst, they partied during the preseason and just dont care, bring back franciso. Warner is good, but they should have given Lienart a chance, we need mobility with a rush like that. The Was cant call plays, also saying dont panic, but his gameplan is predictable and vanilla.

Don't be so confident steelers fans, you won't get pass the Patriots this year and will be lucky if you get pass the Ravens. My Arizona Cardinals have a better chance to go deeper in the playoffs than you do. You steeler fans just better enjoy your reign now cause you might just find it hard to make the playoffs. Big Ben will probably fold before you reach 10 games this season. At least if our star QB goes down we have Matt Lienart waiting in the wings. I'm just being realistic. Cardinals will repeat as NFC West champs and have a good chance to make it back to the NFC championship game.

Steeler fans never fear, Big Ben is here. As far as this 2009/2010 campaign, I see the Black & Gold finishing no lower than 12 -4 record perhaps as high as 14-2 record. Five of the toughest five teams we face all year will be at home (i.e. Tennessee, Sandiego, Minnesota, Greenbay and of course Baltimore). I expect Pittsburgh to go at least 4 and 1 over that stretch. We might lose in Chicago and Baltimore or Baltimore and Miami or Chicago and Miami as far as road games.

Blow out victories (i.e. double digits) consist of Kansas City, Denver, Oakland, Detroit, Cincinnati (2) and Clevland (2)!! Let me know if you good folks of Steeler Nation agree with this assessment or not.

Peace everyone and God Bless !!

@Chris---and all the rest of you Arizona sore losers, why dont you re-watch that NFC championship game last year. You would have had to be blind not to have seen that pass interferance call on Arizona. Curtis got assaulted on that final drive and had Philly got the call Arizona would have been watching the first Pennsy suber bowl. But they didn't so Arizona moved on, just like all the SB losers need to do. Always a excuse on why the losing teams should have won. Get over it you lost last year,,and Seatle lost as well. Notice everyone has a excuse, no one cares to remember the fact we beat the three best AFC teams to get to SB, then beat Seatle ,who was supposed to be the best NFC team. Last year next to Baltimore only, we had the hardest schedule in the NFL and got to a SB only to have your weak @$$ division show up again with you as the reps and we won. You guys call him "The Wiz" ,,that makes sense,,start following the yellow brick road,,or ease on down ,,ease on down ,,the road. Lightening doesn't strike twice, not even in the desert and you guys were just lucky to get there last year. New season is starting so go get the mop and clean up your spilt milk,,buncha cry babies
