Mangini pushing forward with Browns

BEREA, Ohio (AP)—The owner is sick about the state of his sorry NFL team. The fans are in an uproar. The starting quarterback is historically inefficient and may be about to lose his job. The star running back may retire with one year left on his contract.

The Cleveland Browns are beyond bad.

Their coach doesn’t believe it will last.

Eric Mangini believes his plan for turning around the brutal Browns will work despite a horrid first half of the season. On Monday, Mangini said he spoke by phone with Randy Lerner and has the owner’s support despite Cleveland’s 1-7 start to a season growing worse.

“I never got a feeling otherwise in all my conversations with Randy,” Mangini said.

The bye week arrived just in time for the Browns, who were thumped 30-6 on Sunday in Chicago, Cleveland’s latest lopsided loss. After the game, an upset and frustrated Lerner told reporters he was “sick about” the team’s slide but that he would not fire Mangini.

Mangini, too, is dismayed by the losing but remains confident the Browns will improve.

“This is a process,” Mangini said. “We talked about that quite a bit, and that doesn’t change. There’s things that go along with that and that doesn’t mean we’re not looking to win every game, it doesn’t mean we’re not looking to improve each week. On the contrary, that’s exactly what we’re going to do.

“Randy and I share the same vision and that’s something that we talked about and what we do talk about quite a bit is what’s the best way to achieve that. I’ve always had good conversations with him and always will.”

Mangini said he shared Lerner’s distaste for the Browns’ putrid performance so far.

“But I also believe in the things that we’re doing and I understand it doesn’t happen overnight,” he said. “There’s not one formula in terms of specific ingredients, but there is a very specific approach that you have to take and I believe in that. It has been successful. It will be successful here.”

Mangini and his coaching staff will spend the next week—the Browns don’t play again until Nov. 16—evaluating and analyzing every aspect of the team. Despite Cleveland’s offense being ranked 31st overall and scoring just five touchdowns, Mangini has no plans to change offensive coordinator Brian Daboll’s duties.

However, he may rely more on quarterbacks coach Carl Smith, a former offensive coordinator with New Orleans and Jacksonville.

Mangini’s also holding off on making a decision at quarterback. Derek Anderson(notes) posted a 10.5 rating in Sunday’s debacle before he was yanked in the final minutes for Brady Quinn(notes), who began the season as Cleveland’s starter but was benched after just 10 quarters.

Mangini lamented Cleveland’s five turnovers, including two fumbles—one by rookie wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi(notes), the other by tight end Steve Heiden(notes)— following completions by Anderson that sabotaged potential scoring chances. Mangini felt the Browns were moving the ball and Anderson can’t be judged solely on his atrocious statistics.

“You never just want to look at the numbers, you want to always look at it in the context of the game,” Mangini said.

Anderson’s numbers are impossible to ignore.

According to STATS LLC, his 36.2 QB rating is the lowest of any player through eight weeks since Oakland’s Marc Wilson in 1981. Also, Anderson’s 320 yards passing in the past four games are the fewest by any quarterback with a minimum of 80 attempts since Chicago’s Vince Evans in ’81.

Lerner expressed a desire to bring in a reputable football adviser, “a person that can provide leadership and clarity regarding decisions and direction.”

Mangini said he would be open to such a hire.

“If you can add quality people that can help you get better, then you do that,” Mangini said. “You’re always searching for those opportunities.”

Mangini’s job security was not a topic in Cleveland’s locker room, which was mostly vacant Monday.

Linebacker David Bowens(notes), who played for Mangini in New York, feels the coach’s system may not take hold until the team starts winning.

“Part of the problem is we have a lot of guys on this team that have been used to losing, been used to being on teams that have won a lot of games and don’t understand the process,” Bowens said. “I think just selling out and buying in. I firmly believe in just hard work and execution. The coaches can coach their tails off, they can get two hours sleep a week, but they’re not playing the game.

“A lot of mistakes are made by us as players. Once we assess that and just buy in, commit ourselves to each other, I think things will change.”

OK--lemme see if I have this right...Manidiot has complete authority over the football team...so the Browns fire the GM...? Oh kay...the team is 1-7 starting a QB with a rating under 50, an OC who can't grab his arse with both hands and to fix the problem they dump a guy who was nothing more than a figurehead of a GM having no power whatsoever while keeping the root cause of all the problems...got it...just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything...

#8... I am not a huge Mangini fan, but hey. You remeber that those magic beans let Jack find the goose that layed the golden eggs.

This team needs a lot of help. I have seen some improvement in defence, but right now our offence sucks... Let Quinn play the rest of the season. This season is lost. Let Quinn get the experience he needs!

I agree with most of what Joshua H. posted. I've been a Browns fan since 1979 when I was 10 yrs. old and even though I've got to witness some exciting seasons, those teams eventually fell short of thier goals. I'm also as disgusted as any fan is though and lately my skin has become a lot thicker and my emotion more calloused. At least coming into this season I knew that we weren't going to be a good team this year and that no coach would have turned this team around that fast. This team erritates the piss out of me but I also remember 3 years without a team here to root for and how empty and meaningless Sunday NFL games felt to me. I also don't care if we had Payton Manning at quarterback and Adrian Peterson at running back or any other star player you want to fantasize about. I'm a fan of certain players and I like to see them succeed but at the end of the day I'm going to root for the Cleveland Browns not the name on the back of the jersey regardless of how exciting and talented the player. So all the fair weather fans that want to jump ship and eat the flavor of the day, I hope you choke on it! "Go Browns"!!!

The problem is not with Mangini, it's to early to tell if he will turn out to be a good coach. The problem is Lerner waited to long to get rid of the last crew of Crenel and Savage. Savage is the one who put together this almost completely talentless team. Savage should of been fired years ago. Players like Braylon Edwards should of been traded away long ago. I don't care what we could of gotten for them. Kellen Winslow Jr. should of never been drafted at all. We have a lot of draft choices this coming year and it looks like they will be first or second pick overall. Time to make something of the draft and help this team.

I heard BROWNS have let go there GM at 7pm tonight, No great loss there.
Just another do nothing kind of guy getting a BIG salary, letting the Coach dictate what to do.

The Browns Coach Mangini has no clue either, he has a guy as his off Coord that has no idea what
to do. Its all the buddy buddy system at work. They have no talent and what talent they do have they dony use right! Thats bad coaching people.

Keep firing them ALL to they can get it right or just sell the Damm team and be done with it.
The owner has No Clue what is he is doing, remember Al made all the money, his son just inherited
it all, he has no clue or common sense on how to run a team.

Well first off no one can blame the coach when it is his first year, the team stunk before he got here, DA is a good QB if he could just get some protection, I hope we get a good line for next year and hope that the injuries stop, if we had a good off line we could run and not have to throw hurried passes that end up intercepted

"ha you browns fans are such cry babies always blaming the coach and the quarterback. just face it you guys stink you always have an always will! if ur not willing to put up the cash u cant get the good players. think of all the player u passed up in the draft??? oh and cribbs deserves a better team one that wins. maybe for xmas you can ask santa for an offensive line one that blocks for your qb so he doesnt have to rush his passes and having wr that can catch often helps! i personally like paying a couple million for a qb that sucks watch though as soon as he leaves and goes to a team with an off. line he'll be good. you guys should just move them again and let cin. ben. represent ohio atleast they win!!!! "

You know, I'm a Bengals fan through and through, but I love to see the Brownies do well (which many people conveniently forget their awesome 10-6 season a couple of years ago), but comments like this piss me off. Find a team that wins and support them?

That's called BANDWAGON. Every team in the history of football has its ups and downs, good seasons and bad. And yes, the Browns have had a LOT of bad seasons. But it takes someone extraordinary who is truly loyal and truly loves their team to stick with them when they're losing.

There are a lot of problems with the Browns, and eventually it'll get fixed. Not this season, and maybe not even next. They need a lot of changes in roster and, yes, even in coaching. But there will come a time when the Browns will be good again, and only the loyal fans will know the feeling of true gratitude.

And I know that feeling. The Bengals have sucked for years. When everyone jumped on their bandwagon in 2005 (and hopped promptly off after the playoffs), I felt like I TRULY appreciated their great season. And it looks like I may be able to feel that gratitude again this season (keep it up, fellas!). But I sincerely hope that the hardcore Browns fans, through thick and thin, get their kick ass season too.

Cause guess what: it's going to happen.

I am going to contact all the other NFL teams and we are going to take up a collection for Mangini and the Browns. Like collecting for the Salvation Army at Christmas but the money will be utilized to get some talent so they can compete.

Either Mangini is one of the most persuasive con men ever or Lerner is so gullible that he would trade the family cow for magic beans.

Keep Mangini. Fire Mangini. Start Anderson. Start Quinn. In the end, it doesn't matter. The worse they get, the more open my Sunday schedule becomes.

My only suggestion is to beench all underperforming vets and let the young guys have a chance to show what they have. You might get some passion in their play then. And it's not like they could play that much worse.

Too bad we cut that "thumper" in the middle, Beau Bell...
