Mangini mum on GM’s sudden ouster

BEREA, Ohio (AP)—The convoluted ouster of George Kokinis as Cleveland’s general manager barely made a ripple in the Browns’ locker room.

These guys are accustomed to losses.

Pro Bowl tackle Joe Thomas(notes) hardly knew Kokinis, who was hired in January and left the club under unexplained circumstances on Monday.

“He wasn’t around too much, and when he was, he was pretty quiet,” Thomas said.

Everyone inside team headquarters at 76 Lou Groza Blvd. was pretty quiet on Tuesday. The Browns, who have a bye this week, went about their business as rumors swirled about Kokinis, the events that led up to his departure and who— or if—anyone will replace him.

Browns coach Eric Mangini offered no details about the team’s decision to move on without his longtime friend and hand-picked GM.

“Anytime a decision like this is made it is difficult personally and professionally,” Mangini said. “George is a friend of mine and I respect him and I wish his family well. I can tell you that for a variety of reasons things didn’t work out. You never go into a situation like this with the intention of it not working out.

“We felt that, organizationally, this was the best decision in order to move forward.”

That was about as deep as Mangini would venture into the Kokinis matter. Mangini spent most of his news conference politely deflecting questions about why the decision was made.

He was asked if there were legal reasons why he couldn’t address Kokinis’ exit.

“There’s really a variety of reasons,” he said, “and I’ll just leave it at that.”

Browns owner Randy Lerner, who following Sunday’s loss in Chicago said he planned to hire a “serious, credible” football authority to help run his fumbling franchise, was not available for comment. A team spokesman said there was no immediate plans for Lerner to address the media.

Lerner did spend two hours meeting with two disgruntled season-ticket holders, who have been urging Cleveland fans to stay out of their seats for the Nov. 16 kickoff against Baltimore in protest of the team’s futility. “Dawg Pound Mike” Randall said Lerner was open to their ideas and gave them a few of his own.

“He’s trying to get the Browns on the right track,” Randall said. “He wants it to happen now. He cares deeply.”

It’s still not known if Kokinis was fired or forced out by the Browns, who are 1-7 and have been overmatched in most of their games.

There are reports that Kokinis was asked to resign by Lerner, who pressed the former GM and sought to dismiss him “for cause.” Citing a team source, ESPN.com reported that the team’s security and legal department were reviewing phone records to build its case against Kokinis.

The Browns denied reports that Kokinis was escorted from the building on Monday.

As for a possible replacement for Kokinis, Mangini would not comment when asked if former Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar might handle some of the GM’s responsibilities. Kosar was recently brought in by Lerner in an unspecified consulting role that could expand.

Also, the team has not addressed reports that former Browns and New York Giants GM Ernie Accorsi, a close friend of Lerner’s, might return to Cleveland in some capacity. Accorsi helped Lerner search for a GM earlier this year and has been working as a consultant for the NFL since retiring in 2007.

Mangini said he would not be resistant to the Browns giving final personnel decisions to someone else in the future.

“My goal is to win and my goal is to improve,” he said. “There’s never opposition to someone that can help us achieve that goal. That’s true here. It was true in New York with the Jets.”

Mangini said he learned under coaching mentors Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick the benefits of being open to the opinions of others.

“You appreciate the feedback,” he said. “You appreciate the honesty. You appreciate people trying to constantly improve at what they’re doing or constantly help the group improve. You want to hire as many people as you possibly can like that.”

Mangini and Kokinis began their careers together working under Belichick, when New England’s coach was with the Browns in the 1990s.

Their breakup as a management team came less than a year after former GM Phil Savage and coach Romeo Crennel were dismissed after failing to make Cleveland a consistent winner.

Kokinis’ parting is just more of the same for the Browns.

“It doesn’t affect me,” tight end Steve Heiden(notes) said. “I can speak for myself on this because I’ve been here a while and I’ve seen some changes. I can’t control anything that goes on anywhere else besides at this locker. That’s the truth and that’s all I’m trying to do.

“I’m in my bubble and I’m staying there.”

I'm now laughing at post 156, posted by Lind! We all think the Browns suck, and y'all are calling the coach "Mangina"? Very funny, as we should change the team's name to "the Cleveland Clowns."

post 158.... 1st round draft picks? Both Qb's together arent worth a 1st round pick! They should have traded one or both of them right after Anderson went to the Pro Bowl! Then maybe they could have gotten 2nd rounders out of them...

Seriously the Browns should hire me as GM! I mean I cant do any worse than every GM they have had since they came back into the league! Mangini is a joke. There are so many coaches out there that have a proven track record that are available. Fire Mangini at the end of the year, hire me as GM and I will hire a Super Bowl winning coach....

mobdeadmeat @ 149 That is a very realistic Strategy, Very well put, but in this age of instant gratification what a feat it is just to get em to think that way. Some coaches come into a team with a good foundation & just need to tweak a little and some come into a mess and need a decade to rebuild by the way its all structured. Whatever the case The NFL culture has made their Bed ( THE POMP OF A SUPERBOWL WIN) and now thats what the expectations are for all teams & if they come up short especially the ones that are hyped to do it, then the EMOTIONAL & PSYCOLOGICAL WRATH IS COMING LIKE A TIDAL WAVE. The fans who's team wins a SUPERBOWL carry the Euphoric Feeling just like the players do with their Smack talk to the other fans of the loosing teams! So its like a DRUG, your never satisfied with a division win if ya have mainlined the Top Grade Stuff..........

He won't discuss it because he knows that he is next. Since he is a first year coach in cleveland he will probably survive until in end of the season.

How the Browns could hire this joke in the first place is beyond me.

When Lerner hired Mangini it told you that he was bereft of ideas and committed to losing. If the NFL didn't have profit sharing, geniuses like Lerner, Snyder and good ole Al would've been forced to leave the industry because of their piss-poor ownership. If these guys really want to "Win", they need to set realistic goals, get help in assembling a decent management & coaching staff and then get the hell out of the way. Everyone in the NFL blabs on about Superbowls and, yeah, its nice to have a goal, but in all honesty, MOST fans would be satisfied with consistent home field wins and regular post-season appearances. If you can build a franchise that accomplishes those two things you're heading in the right direction and have a great shot at the SB. hey, but what do I know...I'm just a fan...:)

Mangini is more of a control freak than a coach. He is in the league of Cable of the Raiders and McCarthy of the Packers that think they are more valuable than the team itself. Remember when he dumped Graham Harrell as a quarterback prospect? Yes, Anderson and Quinn are much more potential greats than a promising college quarterback such as Harrell. Cleveland is in for many years of dismal football until Mangini and his cronies are booted.

I was going to leave these posts alone and let the clowns fans wallow in thier teams utter lack of anything remotely looking like a high school team, oh wait they are a pro team, well in name only. Anyway I was going to leave you losers alone until sillflu decided to throw my team into this conversation so I thought I would share a little joke I heard a while back goes like this

A man enters a bar and orders a drink. The bar has a robot bartender. The robot serves him
a perfectly prepared@#$%tail, and then asks him, "What's your IQ?" The man replies "150"
and the robot proceeds to make conversation about global warming factors, quantum physics
and spirituality, biochemistry, environmental interconnectedness, string theory,
nano-technology, and sexual proclivities. The customer is very impressed and thinks,
    "This is really cool."

He decides to test the robot. He walks out of the bar, turns around, and comes back in
for another drink. Again, the robot serves him the perfectly prepared drink and asks him,
"What's your IQ?" The man responds, "Around 100." Immediately the robot starts talking,
but this time, about football, fast cars, baseball, super models, favourite fast foods,
    guns, and women's breasts.

Really impressed, the man leaves the bar and decides to give the robot one more test. He
returns, the robot serves him and asks, "What's your IQ?" The man replies, "Duuuh, 50,
I think." And the robot says... real slowly. "So, are you gon - na pull for the
    Browns again this year?"

that says about everything about the clowns I want to say.The Champ told you that so believe it.The Champ

No doubt about it Mangina threw Kokinis, his friend under the bus to save his own fat rear end. He has conned Randy "slow" Lerner into thinking he is working in the best interest of the "team". He is a joke who has no business being on an NFL sideline unless he is a waterboy. Lerner needs to wake up now before this thing turns into a 3 years later miserable disaster before he does something. A quality coach can put his stamp on a losing team right away and see results. Mike Smith, Sean Payton, Bill Cowher are examples. What was the first thing that happened after they hired Mangina? He started having issues with players right away. That will not build a winning team. Browns fans if lerner and mangina gets rid of every player who doesnt agree with the coach and replaces them with players who think he is great how good can they ever be? Can Mangina now!!!

I go to Yahoo NFL home page and get excited because there are two articles about Cleveland highlighted amongst their seven or eight that they disply on the right hand side. Oh wait, it's the Browns. How do the Browns keep themselves in the news? They fire a guy that has only been here for less than a year, some pair of idiot fans get to meet with the owner to whine about some banners and their plan to embarrass the city in front of the entire country.
Nice, proud to live in the Cleveland area. I hate to say this but one of these road trips for the Cavs, all the people should leave Cleveland and this city should just blow itself up and start over again. Truly a disaster with no end in sight.

Mangini is a joke. First of all this is not high school ball. He didn't know his starter until Sunday morning or he would not name his starter. JOKE you are Mangini. You are an ass. Grow up. Last year in NY you decided to hide Favre injuries and got fined. You helped Bellicheck video teams and turned him in when u could not beat him. NOW, you suck again. You should have been fired first. What do you mean you have total control? You should be fired. You were not good as an assistant either. It was a sytem that helped you and you had talent JACKASS.
