Reports: Browns fire GM

BEREA, Ohio (AP)—Several reports say Cleveland Browns general manager George Kokinis has been fired by the 1-7 team.

Citing unnamed league sources, the Cleveland Plain Dealer and WKYC-TV in Cleveland say Kokinis was escorted out of the Browns’ headquarters by security on Monday.

Team spokesman Neal Gulkis says the team could not confirm the reports.

Kokinis was hired in January, just two weeks after the team named Eric Mangini as its fourth coach since 1999. Following the Browns’ 30-6 loss in Chicago on Sunday, Browns owner Randy Lerner said he would not fire Mangini during the team’s bye week.

Before joining the Browns, Kokinis spent 18 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. He spent the final six years as the team’s director of pro personnel.

Mr. G. Kokinis did a great job in Baltimore and should NOT have left the RAVENS....He is well liked by the Baltimore franchise and had a LONG tenure with the team!! A promotion to G.M. was a professional opportunity, It, unfortunately, backfired.......as the team and Cleveland FANS are frantic over this year's poor performance!!! Hardly Kokinis' fault..........but he is receiving the lame blame!!!

I hope Kokinis' will find another opportunity soon---he deserves better!!

Im all for bringing back Marty. But first lets deal with this mistake named Mangini. Fire him now. No reason to allow him to further destroy the Browns. He picked Kokinis, and its obvious Mangini was running the show in every way so why fire Kokinis, and not Mangini. I sure hope Lerner doesnt think we are that dumb. Kokinis firing does nothing for us. Fire Mangini. Hes the problem. Players cant come out to the media and say they dont want him as a coach. They do the only thing they can. Not show up on Sundays. The same ay the fans will during the Brown Out. We dont have a great team thats for sure, but we have a better team than the one showing up each week. Everyone wants Mangini gone.

Bring back Marty... they say he cannot win a playoff game but you have to admit he gets his teams there.

Well I guess you Browns protesters actually got some results... Never thought it would happen but this early firing seems to be a result of all of the hoopla... I stand corrected, maybe this stuff actually works lol. Way to go protesters.

Ok - this is a start - but more to do. First off - Lerner should NEVER have hired the coach before the GM - doomed from the start. You hire the competent football leader (your words Lerner) and let HIM choose the coach - even in business thats the way you do it - Lerner should know better. So hire a new GM (I suggest Ozzie) and tell them they have carte blanche with the coaches and players. GM evaluates Mangini and makes decision to keep or boot. And as much as i love Bernie - he has no business being anywhere near a management position - unless its entry level and he proves himself - being a good player has little if any correlation to being a good manager. different skill sets all together - sometimes it works (Ditka) and many times it doesn't (Bird, Thomas, Zorn) but one doesn't equal the other. The fact he hasn't coached at any level would indicate to me he doesn't really have the make up to do the real work of management. - nor the mgt experience. With 11 draft picks we need the BEST talent assessment team possible - and we need them on board now. Given our recent drafts - not convinced we have that now - but hard to tell. Certainly better than the yahoos that drafted Junkin, Clifford Charleton, etc....

Straight Out the Burbs, um, you're the one who posted the dinosaur terms. You want to keep it low brow and moronic though, huh? Wow. Keep shooting low and have another Budweiser. What are you doing here though? Shouldn't you be on a pro wrestling chat line with the other 9-year olds? (There, I didn't use any big words. Happy?)

Dre, you must not be from anywhere near Ohio to not realize that Cleveland supports all its sports teams. It's not the city or its fans. It's the current owners, who would travel with the team in your proposal. Bring that idea to Brownstown and you'll wind up doggie doo, sport. If you're just yanking the chain...lame. Contribute or go back to your Gerber's. The fans boo this team because it's a farce and a shame and nothing like the historic team. Check out the history. The Browns came into the NFL on a 10 year championship game streak and won most of 'em. The Browns modernized the game. The only reason people from elsewhere don't think the Browns were ever anything is because they're too young and they started calling the championship game the Super Bowl too recently. Yeah, it's been a while, but they've been strong until they grew feathers. The original Dawgs beat the reigning Super Bowl champion Chicago Bears, itself a historic team, and the Super Cowboys and gave the Super Super 49ers a great 17-14 game at a time when they were blowing out everybody else by 30+ points. I still think the reason the Broncos lost all those Super Bowls is because they had to fight so hard to beat the Browns, but the Browns would have done better in the Big Show. I know, it's speculation, but it's also Browns backer pride. Don't think it's not here. We're just brown baggin' it like the unknown comic these days.

As a long time Browns fan I feel sorry for all the fans as well as Mr. Lerner. It seems to me as if he started off as a hands off owner. He hired people he thought could get the job done and stepped aside. I think those days are long gone, the team now has his full attention and we will see a big difference next year and going forward. I think for the sake of his father's legacy and his own personal pride, today will mark the turning point of the Cleveland Browns and the only way left to go is UP. I am a fan of my home team thru thick and thin.
    Go Browns!!!!!!!!!!

I'm trying to get info on Cleveland and you got Dr. Seuss talking about a ornithologist?! Please no one else rattle up ballboy65 or he might pull out more gems such as Archaeopteryx, Enantiornithes, or some other lame attempt at humor!

What a joke the Browns are!! You don't fire a GM after not even one full year, it just shows how dysfunctional your organization is. What the hell were you thinking Randy Lerner? Did you think the Browns were actually a quick fix scenario? If so, you are foolish and very rapidly ascending to the the very top of the most abysmal owners in the NFL.

Why does Cleveland need a pro football team anyway? Disband the Browns and move them to a city that can support them, then they may win. But in Cleveland? Not in this lifetime will they win!!!!!

18 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, huh? So, what is he, an ornithologist? 18 years ago they were called the Cleveland Browns and that history is this Cleveland Browns history. No wonder there's no byline. I said fire Mangini after his game 3 punk-out a la Romeo's game 1 punk-out to Dallas previously, at which point I called for Romeo's head. If you don't want to coach for a win or even confidence you are not earning your salary and certainly not my respect, nor your players'. This team needs a great football mind to run it and hire a coach who has guts and strategic skills, not a punk with a hall monitor mentality and no creativity on the field. At this point, Mangini ought to be trying every trick he can pay someone else to think up for him: fake field goals, two point conversions, hell, try the two QB scheme. There is really nothing to lose and at least it will make the games interesting. You've got 'til Monday night's big game to figure it out Eric, but I won't hold my breath. You've also got 'til 2010 to pack your things and don't look back. Yes, that's my foot on your *ss.

Hard to place blame on GM's or the coach's when there is not enough talent on the field to execute the simplest of plays....again, why not rebuild with defense--for the next five years--all defense--

This decision makes no sense. If Kokinis was not hired until after the current coach was hired, how is he responsible for the team's poor record? The Cleveland Browns are grasping at straws for a scapegoat. With this decision out in plain view, why would any qualified person want to be the GM for an outfit that blames a new hire for the team's bad performance. The Browns must be owned by a bunch of clowns.

Someone has to take the fall for this lousy team. I for one will not spend my hard earned money on a team like this. At least put a team on the field that has fair chance of winning and gives the fan at least a little bit of excitement.. Thank god for Josh Cribbs.

Uhhh...#9, Mangina is the same coach as Cronell. Why would you fire one coach for another with the same records? He is going to build a middle of the road team. Why do you want that? Get rid of Mangina!!!
