Unbeaten Broncos, desperate Ravens emerge from bye

BALTIMORE (AP)—The Denver Broncos are unbeaten because they have the top-ranked defense in the NFL and a quarterback who is very protective of the football.

It’s a formula that for years worked quite well for the Baltimore Ravens, who have lost three straight.

One team is undefeated, the other desperate. It should make for a very interesting Sunday afternoon for a couple of well-rested AFC powerhouses coming off a bye.

“It doesn’t get any better for football,” Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis(notes) said. “There are a couple teams left undefeated. I’m OK with not being undefeated, because I want to do some other things. Those guys are in a great position right now. The bottom line is, the Broncos are playing very sound football right now. They have a reason to be undefeated.”

Reason No. 1 is a defense that has allowed an NFL-low 66 points, including 10 in the second half. Denver has given up only five touchdowns in 66 possessions and leads the league in third-down defense (27 percent conversion rate).

All of this has come under the direction of coordinator Mike Nolan, who held the same job with Baltimore earlier this decade.

“Mike’s a very good communicator,” Denver’s rookie head coach Josh McDaniels said. “I think that’s very important for every coach, and Mike certainly has the great ability to get his players to understand what he’s asking them to do and then get it out of them. He’s very intelligent.”

Nolan’s defense has been aided by an offense run by quarterback Kyle Orton(notes), who has thrown nine touchdown passes and only one interception—on a why-not heave at the end of a half. Orton’s careful play has enabled the Broncos to compile a plus-7 turnover differential and, of course, a 6-0 record.

Denver hopes the same philosophy can work against the Ravens (3-3).

“They’re very good. I don’t think we’re going to be intimidated by anybody,” former Baltimore receiver Brandon Stokley(notes) said. “We will have to be very good on offense, and be smart, to be successful against that type of defense.”

The Ravens used to depend on a stingy defense headed by Lewis and a conservative offense that preached running the ball and passing prudently. As recently as last year, Baltimore led the NFL in yards rushing and time of possession, which enabled the defense to stay off the field and resulted in a trip to the AFC championship game.

This year, the offense has stepped it up behind two second-year players. Joe Flacco(notes) has thrown at least one touchdown pass in six straight games and running back Ray Rice(notes) leads the team with 33 catches. But the pass-happy attack has not been backed by the defense as effectively as in the past.

Baltimore gave up 33 points in a loss to Minnesota before the bye, and the Ravens rank an uncharacteristic eighth in yardage allowed. Thus, Baltimore is 1 1/2 games out of first place in the AFC North after getting off to a 3-0 start.

If it comes down to performance in the second half, then something’s got to give. Denver has been spectacular after halftime, but the Ravens have scored 66 points alone in the fourth quarter—including 21 against Minnesota on the road.

“It’s a matter of coming out and playing with responsibility and being physical and maybe coming up with a call or two here or there that makes the difference in any game,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. “Look at the Broncos. Look how well they’re playing in the second half. They’ve given up two third-down conversions in the second half all year. That’s unheard of. So, the second half is going to be very important in this game.”

The secret, according to Broncos defensive end Elvis Dumervil(notes), goes beyond the playbook.

“Coach McDaniels emphasizes finishing. A lot of it has to do with conditioning,” Dumervil said. “I think guys understand that in the NFL. You just have to continue to outwork your opponent.”

The Broncos are underdogs against Baltimore even though they chugged into their bye with wins over Dallas, New England and San Diego. A victory would go a long way toward making believers out of those who simply can’t fathom the Broncos have become part of the NFL elite with a first-year coach and Orton, who wasn’t nearly this effective with the Chicago Bears.

Hey poster 26: We conservative, constitutionalist, lunatic broncos fans take exception to you categorizing all denver fans as "liberal Democrat lunatic Denver fans". In the furure, please direct that to Boulder and southern suburbs of Denver. Just because the DNC was here doesn't mean we liked it.

The "thin air" excuse cracks me up, LOL. You have to be in Denver at least 3 or 4 days before you actually feel any effects of the "thinner air" , even then it's very minimal. It's only 5200 feet. And the Broncos play in the same air. Find some other lame excuse. Go Broncos

Hey Poster 25: Wake up moron. I do not like the Ravens but they will dismantle Denver this week and Pittsburgh will blow Denver out next week. Look at the Vikings, if Ravens could kick a field goal, Vikes loose. Last week Pittsburgh toyed with the Vikes until the Vikes thought they could win, then Pitts took it away. Denver will have minimum 5 starters knocked out of the game by the Ravens and at least 5 more next week by the Steelers. So listen you liberal Democrat lunatic Denver fans, your 15 minutes of fame this season is over.

i'm a huge broncos fan but i also been following the ravens defense. i am a big fan of hard hitting football and i admire ray lewis passion for the game. heard ed reed and another d back wasn't @ full speed, they better have reed @ 100% going against this hot denver team. also the experts have been going against them all yr and i hope they keep it up cause everyone knows, teams play better when they feel like no one gives them any respect, like early this week, the line was ravens -4.5 i was like, are you kidding me. one reporter mentioned it to dumervil,he said, actions will speak better then talk, this coming sunday,no more talk, broncos 23 ravens 17..................

the thin air can have alot to do with it with some players. Look at two of my steelers starters have sickle cell anemia and they have a hard time in denver. Ryan Clark almost died the last time he played there. But if the ravens dont beat your broncos then my steelers will come to denver and turn your broncos into nothing more than pet pony's.

For those of you saying the Broncos are 6-0 based on a weak schedule so far, ie. comment 15, look at who the Ravens have played. They beat KC a 1-6 team. Squeeked by San Diego 3-3. Tromped all over Cleveland one of the leagues worst teams. Lost to New England, Cincinatti, and Minesota. They have not beat a team with a record over 500 yet. Who has had the weaker schedule so far? And the thin air in Colorado is not that much of a factor. Try coming up with some better excuses, then post a comment.

Denver Fans - with all do respect looking at the sched thus far you have had it fairly easy. MOST of your wins you have had, outside week 1's fluke, against team that are considered the upper elite were at home where there has always been a clear advantage due to the thinner air. Now having said that lets look at the teams that you played that are point scoring machines... I see 3 that dont out right suck and two the the last 3 were still trying to find themselves. Balt is the only team that you have face THUS far that can bring it on both sides of the ball - possibly even better than New England at the moment. NE has totally new defensive line so lets not get ahead of ourselves or you will sound like all the whiners that live in Minnesota should you loose. I would be afraid of this Ravens team - they are rested and angry (not a good combo). It should be a good game regardless ...oh and for the record - Im not a Ravens Fan just being realistic. I expect 1 or maybe 2 of the remainng 3 undefeated teams to loose the next two weeks.....Just dont say I didnt warn you.

    @ Chris #6:
"the so called "experts" don't set the lines, Vegas casinos do"
You should read the article from earlier in the week about how badly the Vegas casinos are getting beaten up by the NFL this season. Their spreads have been getting abused all year and the Broncos are one of the main perpetrators. Keeping picking against the Broncos, though.

Hey "Experts"!!!! Desperate does not necessarity equate to "better". There is a reason the Ravens are
desperate....they have lost three games in a row! Why? because they were not good enough to win. The
no-respect Broncos, however, have won 6 in a row and are UNDERDOGS??? You will change you tune,
come late Sunday afternoon, when the Broncos kick some Raven butts. GO BRONCOS 7-0

    Hey chris (#6)

Telling us, the Denver Broncos, to "stop crying about respect and win the superbowl" is kinda ridiculous, ESPECIALLY if you're pulling for the Ravens.

The Broncos won 97 and 98, Ravens won in 00, so both of our teams are pretty damn far from the last Superbowl win, so stfu.
