Pro Bowler Ty Law signs with Broncos
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP)—Ty Law(notes) spent the first half of the season waiting for the right team to come calling. Now that it has, he doesn’t want to waste any more time getting back on the field.
Law came out of what he called “semiretirement” Saturday to join the Denver Broncos and counts on contributing Monday night when the Pittsburgh Steelers bring three wide receivers to Invesco Field who are averaging more than 14 yards per catch.
“They’re trying to get me ready to play this week in a limited fashion,” Law said. “I did it last year.”
The 15-year veteran joined the Jets at midseason in 2008 and played aplenty a few days later against New England.
“I’m just going to kind of wing it and go out and do the best I can,” Law said. “But right now they’re just shoving a lot down my throat because the terminology is totally different.”
The 35-year-old Law gives the Broncos five players in the defensive backfield who are older than 30. Law said it was comforting to join a seasoned secondary that features Champ Bailey(notes), Andre’ Goodman(notes), Renaldo Hill(notes) and Brian Dawkins(notes).
“It’s different between walking into a situation where you’ve got a bunch of young guys, a bunch of first- and second-year guys. This is perfect. I can take my time and learn the system because it’s already established and all I’m doing is trying to help,” Law said.
The five-time Pro Bowl cornerback passed his physical and practiced with the Broncos on Saturday, trying to acclimate himself to the altitude after signing what was believed to be a one-year deal.
Law, who gives the Broncos a defensive backfield that now sports a combined 20 Pro Bowl selections, also is familiar with Denver coach Josh McDaniels, who was an assistant with the Patriots during his time in New England.
Law helped New England to three Super Bowl titles. He signed with the Jets in 2005 after being released by the Patriots, and had a career-high 10 interceptions and was voted to the Pro Bowl. He was released by the Jets after that season and followed coach Herm Edwards to Kansas City, where he played two years before being cut in the offseason.
“He gives us some depth at corner. He played obviously a long time in this league. He knows how to play inside, outside and he’s in good shape and ready to go,” McDaniels said. “We feel like hopefully it will take us take a step forward.”
To make room on the roster, the Broncos waived defensive back Jack Williams(notes). Law’s signing also likely means reduced playing time in the nickel and dime packages for rookie Alphonso Smith(notes).
Two of the Broncos’ last three opposing quarterbacks—New England’s Tom Brady(notes) and Baltimore’s Joe Flacco(notes) targeted Denver’s third cornerback with great success.
Law had been training in Florida and said he hadn’t counted on staying on the sideline much longer.
“I trained to play. I wouldn’t be out there if I didn’t,” he said. “(I) had some closure in my career as far as what I’ve done and what I’ve accomplished. I’ve accomplished a lot of things. But I still had the itch.”
Law said he spurned other teams’ offers this season and never expected the Broncos to call, but jumped at the chance when he heard from McDaniels. He said he later heard Indianapolis had some interest, too.
But this seemed like the perfect fit.
“First, I’m familiar with a lot of their guys here. They’re hungry. They’re winning and then, my familiarity with Josh McDaniels. I’ve won a few championships with him,” Law said. “Other than going back to New England, this would be the ideal situation for me.
“There are a bunch of guys out there hungry to get a championship and that’s what I’m looking for, to try and capture another championship before I shut down for good.”

I agree. I do think Rivers is a better QB and if I had to build a team and my options were Rivers or Orton I would take Rivers mainly because of the intensity he brings to the position. I don't think that Orton should be judged on what he did, or didn't do, in Chicago. Chicago has been a 'run first' team forever. When Orton was in Chicago he never really had any talent around him (as Cutler is experiencing) and the Bears focused more on the run than the pass. Even Broncos fans are still hoping that they draft another QB next year since there will be so many QBs in the draft and I think the main reason is because Broncos fans are used to a QB who can throw a laser (except for the Griese years) but that's not what McDaniel's system calls for. Every system is usually built around a QBs strengths and this is a brand new system for Orton (not to mention players) so I think Orton still has a lot of upside. Typically when QBs come to a new team and new system they struggle because of the learning curve. Overall that hasn't happened with Orton and Denver's offense is young at nearly every position so that offense isn't going to be changing anytime soon. I think San Diego's offense is starting to see their window of opportunity close. They're still potent but have some holes that need to be filled and right now they have no running game so Rivers is bound to compile some gaudy stats (like Cutler did last year). All I'm really saying is that I don't think Rivers is a vastly superior QB than Orton but he is definitely better.....right now. I think Rivers has shown exactly what type of QB he is and he has been utilized properly. I don't think that is true with Orton yet.

First and foremost, I appreciate the honesty. I too like to call it as I see it regardless of personal bias. That being said, I would still venture to say that Rivers' stats will ultimately run circles around Orton (he's already so far ahead). Yes intelligence is important, its about 50-50 with athletic ability for an NFL quarterback. But I'm not so sure he is smarter than Rivers anyhow, and athletically he is the lesser QB no doubt. The stats of his career so far strongly suggest that this is his "2008 Kerry Collins" season. His QB rating average is 76 compared to Rivers' 93. He's played 40 games and been sacked an incredible 70 times. For his 39 TD passes he has 28 picks. Rivers has played only 19 games more yet thrown 90 TD passes and 40 picks. I wish the best for Orton this season, every dog deserves his day, only I hope that somehow someway it comes down to SD winning the division (longshot i know) and Denver snapping up the wildcard in the face of a Baltimore meltdown, which would mean we might get to play each other in the playoffs for the first time in history (as far as I know).

Any QB with Denver's O-line?
Including Cutler?
I think Orton is undervalued and Rivers is overvalued as QBs. Do I think that Rivers is a better QB? I think Rivers can throw a better deep ball but I think Rivers is also a product of his enviroment. Rivers is an extremely passionate player and gets the most out of the players around him but I'm really curious to see how Rivers does over the next couple of seasons. Gates and Tomlinson are having health issues. They have really good......not great receivers. Their O line isn't superb but it isn't horrible either. Rivers is not a scrambling QB and his knock coming out of college was that he held the ball to long and had a strange delivery. Orton has not had any offensive weapons until this year. Give Orton 3 years in this system and let's see how he ranks statistically to Rivers. I'll wager that his stats will be just as good, if not better. Intellect is the key to running that offense. Cutler did not have that trait. Orton is running the plays that are called.....efficiently, and not turning the ball over. That's the key. Look at the Patriots offense the last few years. It was exactly how Denver's offense is.....spread offense / short passes. Every once in a while they would air it out to Moss but for the most part it was Welker and short passes.
Denver had major injury issues last year.....on both sides of the ball so I know what you mean, but again, an 8-8 record last year for San Diego was pathetic......especially considering it was against the Broncos and the other divisional opponents. San Diego should have coasted in that division last season, just like they were favored this season. Look at the defensive rankings of the Broncos, Raiders, Chiefs last season and that should have been an easy 6 wins right there for a team that was an AFC favorite and yet they still ONLY managed an 8-8 season?
I personally don't see either of these teams having an impact in the playoff race. Someone said that I hate on teams. Nah.....I have my favorite team but if they lose, they lose. I'm not one of these guys that 'HATES' a team just because they're not my favorite team. I may be a little impartial but if I thought the Broncos were going to lose I would bet against them. I try to call it the way I see it. Matter of fact I think the Broncos are going to get whipped Monday night. I just don't think Denver will be able to get pressure on Ben and then he'll pick them apart.

Ooooh. I am so sorry that I forgot an 'e' on bye. Wow....you're so insanely smart. Go back and read all of the preseason articles and the Denver / San Diego pregame report you stupid f**k. San Diego....1) Superbowl Favorites. 2) San Diego...Lock to win AFC West. 3) Coming off it's bye week San Diego is fully rested and healthy.
THEY STILL LOST AT HOME to a Denver team that wasn't supposed to amount to @#$%. So say what you want but Denver WON a game that EVERY single person had them losing prior to the season starting. San Diego FAILED.....period. They CAN NEVER live up to the hype they are given.
So smartass.....answer this question then. Just a straight answer.
How can a team that had more issues in the offseason than ANY team in the NFL (new players, new coaches, new offensive schemes, new defensive schemes AND all of the drama) beat a team that was HEAVILY favored to win the AFC West.......on their OWN field?
There is only ONE answer....
Ohhh......and it's not line men. It's LINEMEN. stupid ass......'its bye week, not by week'
Listen you little ignorant moron.......before you try to blast someone look at your own grammar.
It is hilarious when someone will point out other mistakes and call them 'stupid ass' yet they are making grammatical errors and spelling errors while doing it.

First of all the Chargers have 2 of the starters still injured ever since the beginning of the season and most of the defense are still recovering from injuries. Also I never said how bad Orton arm is? Im just saying that when QB ratings are out and putting Orton over Rivers is a joke. Ofcourse Orton will make good decisions when he has over 10 secs. to throw the ball. If you put any quarterback with the Boncos o-line they have all the time to make the right decision. Put him in a situation when he gets blitz he fails. With Rivers he stands tall and make plays. I've watched the Boncos play and I know what there game plan is with Orton. Like I said its short passes to the receivers and to tell you the truth most often he is not acurate. Yes there are teams that are successful throwing down field like the Saints, Colts, Patriots and other teams. That 8-8 record might be pathetic but it made it to the playoffs against the Boncos. Have the Chargers live up to expectation this year? I say not but I can tell you this that we did find out that we can win games without a great running game and with most pro bowl injured. I think we are having a descent season so far with all the injuries and problems that need to be fix but our backups have step up when it matters the most.

"they came off of a by week and had every starter playing and lost at HOME to Denver" Do you just make stuff up so you can hate on other teams? The chargers came out of the bye week with two pro bowl line men out. the core of their offense and defense were out the first game. so no they didn't play Denver with all their starters playing. stupid ass and its bye week no by week.
