Rodney Harrison(notes) is calling it a career. The two-time Pro Bowl safety (and two-time Super Bowl champ) announced his retirement yesterday in a move that's been in the making for months. So where's the guy that was named the NFL's Dirtiest Player on more than one occasion headed? Where else?
The next stop for Harrison is Studio 8G at 30 Rock, where he'll join Dick Ebersol's stable of stars and future Hall of Famers as part of NBC's "Football Night In America." Now don't get me wrong. Harrison will be an outstanding addition to an already wonderful group of analysts which includes Tiki Barber(notes), Peter King and fellow newcomer Tony Dungy. Bob Costas will still be the traffic-cop host, joined by fellow broadcast veterans Keith Olbermann and Dan Patrick. But check out this lineup. How much is too much?
I just hope the opinionated Harrison will be able to get a word in edgewise. It's a formidable lineup that includes an ex-player turned talking head (Barber); one of the most thoughtful coaches in the history of the league (Dungy); and a veteran NFL writer (King). Throw in Costas, Olbermann and Patrick and you have a virtual Who's Who of Sports Broadcasting Nirvana.
Here's to Harrison finding HIS voice. And an opportunity to let it be heard.

So the Arizona Cardinals are in the Super Bowl. Let that marinade a little. The franchise that gave us Rod Tidwell and bumbling ownership will play for the Lombardi Trophy in Tampa.
And what a locker room! You've got Jesus-loving, Bible-thumping quarterback Kurt Warner on his, like, fourth incarnation as an NFL quarterback. One can assume his speech in Canton (which is virtually assured to happen now, isn't it?) will be one of the most moving and thoughtful the Hall of Fame has ever seen.
You've got Edgerrin James, who despite being unceremoniously dumped by the Colts after their epic flameout against the Steelers in the 2005 Playoffs got a ring from Indy the following year when they won it all. Without him. Edge has been telling anyone who will listen to him this season that he doesn't plan on returning to the Cardinals next season. After all, they only gave him a 4-year, $30 million deal. And oh yeah, he only has ONE MORE YEAR left on said deal. Nice loyalty.
Then you've got another cat altogether in Anquan Boldin. Here's a guy who literally had his face broken against the Jets, came back, suffered a hamstring injury in the Wild Card game against the Falcons, missed the Panthers game then came back to play in the NFC Title Game. The guy may be the heart and soul of the team. A true warrior. But there he was on the sideline Sunday, nagging at Arizona offensive coordinator Todd Haley, during the most important drive in franchise history, for NOT being in the game. Nice "team" guy, right?! Are you serious dude?! Go away.
Meanwhile, Boldin's fellow receiver Larry Fitzgerald, a.k.a. the Messiah, has elevated his status from "one of the best wideouts in the league" to THE BEST WIDE RECEIVER IN THE NFL. He's Randy Moss without the baggage. He's Terrell Owens with the consistency. He's Steve Smith without the attitude. He's Andre Johnson with the quarterback. Yes, the former Vikings ballboy has raised the awareness of his game to, dare I say, Rice proportions.
So this diverse quartet of personalities, along with 49 other professional athletes, will vie for what many thought would never be possible as long as Bill Bidwell was still alive. Yes, I said it again. Cardinals? Super Bowl champs? It could happen.
