Shutdown Corner - NFL

1. Carson Palmer(notes), Quarterback, Cincinnati Bengals. That is what the Bengals can look like when Carson Palmer is dominant for 60 minutes (give or take the garbage time they give to J.T. O'Sullivan(notes)). Palmer completed 83 percent of his passes, and five of his 24 attempts went for touchdowns. Chad Ochocinco(notes) was targeted 11 times, and made 10 receptions. This was the game I'd been waiting for Palmer to have. Yesterday, the Bengals went from, "They could be an interesting team" to "If Palmer plays like that, the Super Bowl is not out of the question."

2. Brian Cushing(notes), Linebacker, Houston Texans. Cushing accepts on behalf of DeMeco Ryans(notes), Bernard Pollard(notes) and everyone else on the Texans defense, but the rookie Cushing has been a big part of their recent dominance against the run. In Week 4, they held the Raiders to 45 yards rushing. Fine, no big deal. The next week, the Cardinals got 44. Next, the Bengals had 46, with league-leader Cedric Benson(notes) being held to 44 yards on 16 carries. This week, Frank Gore(notes) had 13 carries for 32 yards. With all their offensive weapons, if the Texans have put together even half a defense, they are a dangerous group.

3. Tony Romo(notes), Quarterback, Dallas Cowboys. Everyone else has sort of gotten lost in the emergence of Miles Austin(notes), but every big play by Austin yesterday was made possible by an on-the-money throw by Tony Romo. Patrick Crayton(notes) made a big touchdown catch, too, that was set up by Romo shaking off about three near-sacks before making the play. Romo was 21-of-29 for 311 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions on the day.

4. Brett Keisel(notes), Defensive End, Pittsburgh Steelers. LaMarr Woodley(notes) and Keyaron Fox(notes) scored the touchdowns and got the glory for the Pittsburgh defense, but it was Keisel who got to Brett Favre and knocked the ball loose to begin with. Woodley scooped it up, and the rest of the Steelers defense escorted him downfield like they were the secret service and Woodley was the president. An impressive play all around by the defense, and that's where your game was won.

5. Alex Smith, Quarterback, San Francisco 49ers. Usually, only winning teams are represented here in the five MVPs, but I will make the exception for a good redemption story. Alex Smith, the 2005 draft bust for the 49ers, took over for Shaun Hill(notes) at halftime yesterday, and very nearly led the 49ers to an unlikely comeback victory. More importantly, though, Smith seemed to have a good on-field rapport with receiver Michael Crabtree(notes), and long-term, that might be the most important thing in determining who plays quarterback for the 49ers.

Why do Steeler fans think they earn these wins. Every game they have won this year is because of the blown or no calls from the refs. To start off the browns game was a seven point game when Pittsburgh got stopped on fourth and one. Because they were in Pittsburgh the refs gave them a first down, when it was clearly short. That turnover could have changed the game. But they all want to cry about the touchdown pass that was taken away from Ward. If you knew anything about the rules they were changed this year. You have to maintain possession Through the entire catch and come up with the ball. Ward did not the call was correct. This week there was so much that Pittsburgh got away with. Even the announcers have showed replays and even commented during these games about these calls. I know this happens with every team, but in Pittsburgh I guess its what they have to do to win. It's not winning if you have to cheat. The worst part is Steeler fans act like this does not happen. Come on it's on film.

Your a prime example of the Steeler fans I am talking about. Your so blind, if you watched the games for real you would see the things Pittsburgh gets away with. The refs are in their pockets.

Who are you a fan of tom R? The Browns? Maybe you should be complaining about how awful your team is, and why are you whining about a game from last week? Get out over it. and like mastewa said, thanks for the help for number 7, because based on your ref logic, the Steelers will be there no matter what.

LOL nice do some research. Steelers Defense ranked #8 overall and #2 against the Run. Offense #2 in passing yards and Ben is 2nd in Comp % but these stats have nothing to do with them winning 5 games. Oh and what about the calls that went the other way. No where did you mention the crap pushing call against Heath Miller that negated the first half touchdown pass.

How does Jairus Byrd not make this list? He had two huge interception returns and the Bills scored 10 of their 20 points soley as a result of his returns. The offense was putrid but he put them in a position to win the game which they cashed in on.

I know!!!!!! The refs seem to always been in the steelers pockets. How about polamalu's non-interception against Indy on the way to #5? Oh wait, that call went against the steelers, bad example, or maybe, it just happens to everybody? If the stillers didn't win so many damn titles and games, nobody would be crying about the call/non-calls.

tom r...you are a joke. Steeler fans have been watching Harrison get held all game in every game for the last two years but the refs are in our back pocket. Please. There were calls both ways that could have went either way in the Viking game. One big one went the vikes way on the questionable picking call on the Steeler TD and one went Pitts way on the leg whip. Both those calls are debatable but certainly not even close to absolute. Take the calls out of context of the play and we don't even question them. This is a non issue. The truth is Pittsburgh haters are looking for anything to take credit from them.
A couple of side points...announcers opinions do not make it true. Many times just the opposite.
Style points don't get you far in January...you win these games and address your holes now. Sometimes it's better to remain a bit under the radar and deal with adversity because it toughens the team and points out weaknesses that can be addressed. How you address those holes will play a big part in future success.

yea, the Steelers own the refs- thats why Heath Miller gets called for a pass interference that negates a TD- the Vikes get a out-of-bounds reception on the sidelines overturned in their favor. Wanna talk about past games? I agree the TV angle looked like the ball was short on the 4th down play against the Browniesp but the official WAS RIGHT THERE- he had to see that is was past the chain. How about Mendenhall getting the balled stripped out of his hands after he was tackled and laying on his back for a full 2 seconds ?- they never blew the whistle. Same thing happened on a punt return by Stephan Logan a couple of games back- his forward momentum was stopped and he gets driven back 5 yards- then the ball is stripped- wheres the whistle? Oh wait- this must have been the one official the Steelers don't own. Grow up and get a clue- good teams win games like that !

    tomr,
The last time I checked, the referees for football games are assigned by the league, so whether the game was in Pittsburgh or Cleveland would be of no consequence. The Steelers get their share of calls that don't go their way, as well. Someone else mentioned the negated touchdown against the Vikings because of the Heath Miller penalty, but in that same game there was also the successful challenge the Vikings made on the completion that was ruled out of bounds (watching it real-time showed how hard it'd be to call that a catch, but they did overturn the ruling on the field). If the referees and the league were really in the Steelers' pockets as you claim, would either of those calls have gone against the Steelers? I wouldn't think so.

For one you are all what I am talking about. You act like they win on thier own. Without the refs you would not even win half as many games. The jokes are you Steeler fans, you guys get away with everything, but are the first to cry about it when somebody else finally gets away with one.

I would totally slit my wrists if I were a hershey squirts fan so Tom R do us a favor and end it buddy you cant win with your illogical and inane conspiracy theories. The Steelers beat the stuffing out of the last three teams they played before the Vikes. Also we did have a TD taken away on a iffy call as well and Rice was not inbounds at all. The calls are not great but they even up. You are just a whiny baby good teams win despite the calls that go against em so deal with it.

If you guys were watching that was a fair catch. He was two inches inbounds. Why do you think they knocked the ref out on the runback, because there is no way to throw a bogus flag if your on your back. I would imagine that the commentators also know what theyare talking about. It is thier jobs, and most of them are former players. The real problem is that you guys cannot admit the things that happen, you act like it is talent. I am a Dallas fan and I'll be the first to admit that we bought the Neil O'Donnel Super Bowl. Why can't you guys admit without the calls that go your way you would not even be a five-hundred team.

Also in that Browns game Ward caught the ball but the refs and their idiotic catch rules are insane. Do you have to catch it go into the locker room and put it in your locker. Plenty of calls go against the steelers how bout in the super bowl and the phantom hold i.e. safety call? you just need to take your poop stained glasses of and look it as this. Refs are human beings they are fallible and make mistakes just like you and me, we need to accept it and move on.
