Sunday Spotlight: Cedric Benson

The Chicago Bears selected running back Cedric Benson(notes) with the fourth overall pick in the 2005 draft. The Texas back was seen as perhaps the best mix of acceleration, short-area speed and cutback ability in a draft that also saw Auburn's dynamic duo of Ronnie Brown(notes) and Cadillac Williams go in the top five that year. For Benson and the Bears, it never really worked out -- in three years with Chicago, Benson never rushed for more than 674 yards in a single season and his off-field activities (the "boating while intoxicated" charge is a personal favorite) had the Bears going back to the drawing board and selecting Tulane's Matt Forte(notes) with the 44th overall pick. Forte ran for 1,238 yards in his rookie season, while Benson had been waived in June of 2008 with two years left in his contract. After months of cooling his heels, Benson was picked up by the Bengals, who needed depth at the position and have never been shy about taking on reclamation projects.

Unlike most of those reclamation projects, however, Benson has paid off in a major way for the Bengals in their 2009 turnaround season. He currently ranks sixth in Football Outsiders' Rushing DVOA statistic, and he broke Baltimore's 39-game streak of preventing 100-yard rushers when Cincinnati upset the Ravens, 17-14, in Week 5. Benson's Bengals are facing the Bears today, and the man appears to have unfinished business -- he believes that the Bears tried to blackball him, spreading the word about Benson's issues on and off the field after his release. "(Teams) would call and inquire about me and get nothing but negative things. Just that I didn't work hard, that I was I guess a prima donna or I didn't work hard on the field, just wasn't focused, just anything negative that they could say, it was said. I'm sure that contributed largely to me not getting picked up right away." The Bears organization denies any blackballing, though it's standard operating procedure for teams interested in a waived player to do due diligence, and you can't expect the Bears to praise a guy they just cut loose. Not to mention the fact that in today's news avalanche, teams didn't need to hunt around to find word of Benson's problems.

Benson earned his rep before, and the best way to cast it aside is to keep his head down and keep running like crazy. He's got a good chance of success against a Bears defense lining up without super-tackle Tommie Harris(notes), and currently ranked 20th in DVOA against the run.

The Bears did not black ball him. He was always kind of drunk. Not a drinking problem but always smelling of drink. He was arrested for DUI. then he was arrested for boating under the influence. I think also he was really arrested because he was doing sex acts on his boat that all could see. Now in Texas, as a black man, the worst thing you can do is to be abuse white girls in public. So if the case is a non-productive guy, who's high maintenance and on the verge on jail time(he won in court), the only team that is left for you in the all-jail team, the Bengals. I think that's how the league works. He did this to himself. Can he tell me if he got help for his drinking or did he stop on his own?

his actions spoke for themselves. maybe as a person hes turned around now, but he was terrible in chicago. you could tell he didnt work hard. he'd run 3 yards and basically fall down without anyone touching him.

I remember the young white girls on TV telling us, here in Chicago, that Ced wasn't drunk on his boat. If you see him, let him know, that we know that we are the injured party and we look for revenge. He stole money from us. We look to put it on him.

It's not about Matt Forte. It's about Thomas Jones. We had to trade Thomas Jones because Ced was the 1st round draft pick and could win the job. the players didn't like Benson. The players were upset with the Thomas Jones trade. Many here in Chicago are still upset with that trade. He's done a great job with the Jets. Given that none of the player like him; I just hope they don't go to far and get stupid penalties trying to get in some hits on him. However, I can predict a lot of pain for Ced and a couple of fumbles.

Is it just me or do the Bears look completely unorganized? Maybe having Jay Cutler is not enough. He is starting to look like Kyle Benson, that's right Kyle (Orton( and (Cedric) Benson. @ guys that were supposedly not good enough. Maybe Lovie and crew are terrible when it comes to evaluating talent. I mean look at Greg Olsen (overrated) then look at what Kyle and Cedric are dong with teams that are clearly more talented. What.s wrong with the Bears? Answer: The coaching staff and their inability to adapt and sticking to their stupid cover 2 and ultra conservative play calling.
All I want fro Christmas is a new coaching staff!!!!! Bill Cower is available.

I'm glad there is a place in the world for a guy who just likes to have a good time. Yea maybe he was having a bit TOO MUCH, but now that his eyes are open to the fact that without a career there are far fewer of those times I think he will turn it on. Look at Ricky Williams. Its the same thing. I'm all for the rejuvination and would treat Benson to a drink if I ever ran into him.

Right now Josh looks a lot smarter than Lovie. For every great throw Cutler makes he'll get mad cry and full of himself and throw picks. Then he 'll blame everyone else. I can't wait for his post game whine.

I guess there is no pressure to win when wou play in front of morons that will accept losing and be proud of the tradition????? I forgot that the Cubs play in the same town. What a sh!t sports town.

GO CED! 189 yards and tore the Bears DEFENSE apart. He runs hard at 235 and his speed burst to the outside is why he was a 1st rd pick power/speed/balance and ability to run through tackles. He's Sick! Sorry Chicago but Forte is not Benson. Benson is motivated and a man on a mission. He now leads the NFL is rushing yards! 45-10 Bengals, WHO DEY!

The proof is in the numbers, score, total yards,oh, yes, lets see they were talking about being pitt is ahead of the bengals by 1/2 game. now those who believe that better read up if your team has already "played and lost" the tie breaker comes into play..which means your pitt team takes back seat to the bengals. oh yes,the only way they won is on two stupid turn over. the real test for your pitt team is coming right at you, to think that the bronco"s and the ravens are waiting. you pitt team is in deep trouble, these are facts for the ones that think with their head. bengals has pittsburg at the jungle, big fat ben didn't do anything to help today. i think you should start looking at christmas trees and lights, you will not be there. the ravens will do ben in fast....ray lewis will be thinking about you "ben"!!!!!!!!!
