Rams end 17-game winless streak

The Detroit Lions have now put an end to two unbelievable losing streaks this season -- their own, and St. Louis'. It was 19 straight losses for the Lions before they beat the Redskins in Week 3, and they haven't won since. The Rams last won a game on October 19, 2008, beating the Brad Johnson(notes)-led Cowboys, 34-14. Since then, they've barely ever been competitive, especially in the 2009 season. They lost by two to Washington and hung with the Jaguars until overtime, but they've also lost games this season by scores of 28-0, 35-0, and 42-6. But today, at Detroit's Ford Field, the Rams finally stopped their epic losing streak by beating the Lions, 17-10 for the first win of the Steve Spagnuolo era.

It wasn't pretty at all. Safety James Butler(notes) gave the Lions their first two points by returning a Matt Stafford interception out of the end zone, then getting pushed back into the end zone for a safety. The only passing touchdown came from the rocket arm of kicker Josh Brown(notes), who hit fullback Daniel Fells(notes) for a 36-yard score on a fake field goal near the end of the first half. Steven Jackson finally met the end zone with the winning touchdown on a 25-yard run with 1:38 left in the game -- and that was the first rushing touchdown the Rams have scored all year! Jackson has been great all season, and he kept that up today, gaining 149 yards on 22 carries. But points have been an issue. When Fells scored his touchdown in the first half, his three on the season matched the total for all of his offensive teammates combined. Even after this victory, St. Louis' point differential of -144 is by far the NFL's worst; Cleveland's -131 is the only differential that's close.

But a win is a win is a win, and the Rams were long overdue -- no team should have to go through the equivalent of an entire season (plus!) without a win. They now have a bye, then three straight home games. That's the good news. The bad news is that they start that home stretch with the Saints and Cardinals, before easier teams like the Seahawks (who actually beat the Rams, 28-0, in the season opener) come calling.

With the Rams winning, who owns the current most-losses-in-a-row record?

Even though it was a win, their offensive coordinator {Linehan} called a better game than ours did. Time after time they tried running Lackson up the gut or to the left even though we all know how good he is to the right. They also called a quick pass to the left about a gazillion times and I don't remember seeing a single time work. Where is the imagination on offense? Like I said, at least it's a win.

Maybe Josh Brown should start at QB... I mean, he's now the only passer who's won a game for them.

A very reliable anonymous source has confirmed that the Detroit Lions and Michigan Wolverines football squad have decided to consolidate and become one team. Since both offenses cannot find the end zone and the defenses cannot stop an opposing team, it only made sense to send out the same units in an effort to save money in salaries and uniforms. When asked who would coach the new team, either Lion's coach Jim Schwartz or Michigan's coach Rich Rodriguez, both team's fans brilliantly pointed out what difference would it make. The newly merged team will debut next weekend with the new team motto of "easy peasy, lemon squeezy"!

rams are still only #4 when it comes to losing streaks. Tampa had 26, and Detroit and Oakland are tied with 19 games each.

I know one thing everyone can agree on is "What were the Rams thinking when they got rid of Warner"?

Tigers2424 - Don't you remember "the thumb"..?? But I agree. The Rams should have never given up on Warner but that was all Martz. I think they should have gone after him again last year after Kurt's trip to San Fran. The Rams definitely need a new quarterback. At some point this season I hope Spags gives Null some playing time.

Well, in retrospective, losing Warner was a dumb move. I'd rather have him than one dimensional Bulger. The end of the Martz era and the Linehan era really screwed the franchise over. Granted what we see right now is partially the remains of what Linehan left, it's finally good to see a win come for Spags. He's worked hard for this moment, and it should only be a beginning. Once the Rams taste a win, they'll want more.

Doug Farrar said: "no team should have to go through the equivalent of an entire season (plus!) without a win." Doug, are you seriously kidding me. I moved to Detroit in 1963 when I was 3. We have one stinking playoff win and more losses than you can count in my entire life. Every year it is the same story and it always goes back to one common key ingredient: William Clay Ford. Ane he mind you, is in the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame. I do not get it? If any fan deserves better than the poor fans of the St. Loius Rams, it is the poor fans of the Detroit Lions. Make no mistake about it, my season ticket days are over and only when the rest of the fans decide to do the same, maybe Mr. Ford will be willing to do something about it. Heck, the NFL should force him to sell so they stop embarassing the league. I love listening to the TV pre-game talk shows - they almost all have just given up discussing this mockery of a team. If the year 1963 does not sink in let me re-phrase this, I will be 50 next year and since I was 3 we have never been to a Super Bowl and have no banners to hang from the rafters. None. Zip. Nada. Zilch! Sheesh :-(

Wizard..... Bill Sr doesn't need to sell the team. He just needs to turn it over to Bill Jr. In case you forgot, it was Junior's comment about getting rid of the GM...if it were up to him. Once he said that to the press, Bill Sr. didn't have any choice but to fire Millen. Bill Jr. seems to be the only one that really cares about having a winning team. Big Bill can retain ownership. He just needs to step out of the way and let Junior run things.

Wizard i agree, 2 of their first picks aren't even in the league any more. what does that tell ya? give it to the only winning francise owner in detroit thats not afraid to hire descent management that does what needs to be done to win. invest money in young and seasoned talent. if they do not perform get rid of them do not offer them another contract extension and this includes the coaches.
