Offseason Progress Reports: Pittsburgh Steelers

It's too early for '09 season previews, and too late for '08 season reviews. What's an NFL blog to do in the never-ending quest to overcover the bejeezus out of the NFL? Offseason progress reports. Let's go in alphabetical order. Today, the Pittsburgh Steelers

Free agents lost: CB Fernando Bryant(notes), LB Larry Foote(notes), RB Verron Haynes(notes), LB Mike Humpal(notes), QB Byron Leftwich(notes), CB Bryant McFadden(notes), LS Jared Retkofsky(notes), RB Gary Russell(notes), G Kendall Simmons(notes), S Anthony Smith(notes), OT Marvel Smith(notes), WR Nate Washington(notes)

Free agents gained: WR Jayson Foster(notes), WR Shaun McDonald(notes), CB Keiwan Ratliff(notes)

Drafted: DT Evander Hood(notes), OT Kraig Urbik(notes), WR Mike Wallace(notes), CB Keenas Lewis, CB Joe Burnett(notes), RB Frank Summers(notes), DT Ra'Shon Harris(notes), C A.Q. Shipley(notes), TE David Johnson(notes)

The Steelers machine, as evidenced by their sixth world championship back in January, is not broke, and thus, was not fixed. I don't know if any crop of free agent signings has ever better illustrated the "ain't broke, don't fix it" maxim better than Jayson Foster, Shaun McDonald, and Keiwan Ratliff.

The machine did lose a few parts, though, as it was pushed pretty snugly up against the salary cap. Bryant McFadden, Larry Foote, Kendall Simmons, Marvel Smith and Nate Washington all received significant playing time last year, and Byron Leftwich was probably the league's best backup quarterback. They're all off to less green pastures.

Really, though, Leftwich is the only one who isn't easily replaced. Larry Foote's a quality player, but you know the Steelers. There's some anonymous linebacker who's been riding pine and playing special teams for the past three years who will step in this season and make the damn Pro Bowl. I can't tell you who he is, but he's there. The Steelers always have that guy.

They don't have another Leftwich, though. He's gone to Tampa Bay, and Charlie Batch(notes) is again back in the black and gold. Batch is okay, but he's no Leftwich. Realistically, though, no team can expect to keep a quarterback of that caliber as a backup for too long.

The Steelers, obviously, have to be in a pretty good shape for me to be picking on backup quarterback as their a roster problem. I mention it, though, because another roster deficiency -- the offensive line -- makes the use of a backup quarterback a little more likely.

I know, I know ... everyone thought the line was a problem last year, too, and the Steelers only went on to win the Super Bowl. That doesn't mean they're perfect. They gave up 49 sacks last year, and only three teams were worse: the 49ers, Lions, and Bengals. That, plus Ben Roethlisberger's(notes) propensity to hold onto the football like Christopher Walken held on to that pocket watch in Pulp Fiction, means that Large Benjamin's going to take a lot of hits.

Any improvement on the line is going to have to come from within, unless they plan on converting Shaun McDonald to guard. The Steelers did draft a tackle by the name of Kraig Ubrik in the second round, and my guess is that he'll be asked to contribute at some point in 2009. There's also 7th-round pick A.Q. Shipley, who I believe owned and operated a dry goods store in 1895.

Progress: How much progress can you make after winning a Super Bowl? The Steelers didn't lose anything that can't be replaced, and another year of continuity and togetherness should just make them better. And who knows, perhaps the Super Bowl will be the springboard that gives Santonio Holmes(notes) the confidence to take his game to another level. Overall, expect the Steelers of 2009 to look a lot like the Steelers of 2008, though I expect their competition within the AFC North to be better, too.

Minus 1 game. 12-4 last year, 11-5 this year.

The LBs name is Lawrence Timmons, and he'll be awesome.
Also, Dennis Dixon is going to be the backup QB at some point, I would imagine. I think he'll be pretty good.

Thats right Sean. Timmons is going to do very well this year. MJD you have many good points, however, I would like to point out the losses on the offensive line the past 2-3 years. Thats hard to replace. Last years line really started to work together the later part of the season. Going into this year, they should be much improved and really be more like the steelers we are used to seeing.......smash-mouth football with Big-Ben making good plays down the field. Watch outy for Sweed this year.......I bet he has 40-50 catches and 6-8 TD's!!!!!!

Sean L, you are right and don't forget about Woods to give breathers during the game.. I think Dix will "eventually" be the back up, but I also feel he will see some packages for him to run, catch and throw!

Can't replace a backup like Leftwich? Thats funny. He came in and did a good job a few times....only a few times....and now he's a great QB again. Batch will be just as good as Leftwich if needed a few times this year...and sounds like Dixon may be as good too. It's like everyone forgot what Leftwich was when he was a full time starter. Thank you for the good you did when needed Leftwich, but the Steelers are fine without you.

Nice points and assessment on the Steelers. I would think that with a much weaker schedule, they should be capable of at least 11 wins, perhaps 12-13. Ben should have improved numbers in the passing game and Fast Willie & Mendenhall should perform better. Hard to repeat on defense what they did last year, but still should be a top 5 unit in both run and pass defense. If they get more production out of unproven/new player (Mendenhall, Sweed, Timmons, Gay), they could be playing into February.

Charlie Batch was on the IR last year, if not for that they never would've signed Leftwich. He did a great job but Charlie did a great job in the previous season, so I see no loss there. Also Smith and Simmons were hurt all last year too, the current o-line has meshed and although they still have a lot of room to grow, they were good enough to win 12 games and the ring last year. MJD is a jackass, he's really never heard of Timmons, a 1st round pick in '07 and I've heard he has one of the fastest 40 times among LB's in the NFL. Sweed will step-up this year and the addition of McDonald and Wallace; Nasty Nate's departure will go unnoticed. Plus Joe Burnett and Keenan Lewis will drastically improve the special teams game, which was non-existent other than Santonio's punt return TD in the AFC divisional game. If that's all the Steelers have to worry about, here comes Sevenburgh.

Also, there's talks of using Dixon in the wildcat. The guy was a front runner for the Heisman his Sr. year before he got hurt, he's legit. Him and Batch will only push each other, hopefully neither will have to be used though. GO STEELERS!

Mendenhall will have a big impact this year. I have high hopes for Sweed as long as he continues to learn from Hines. That crushing block on Ivy I think it was in the AFC championship game shows some Hines is rubbing off on him. We need Sweed to stretch the field. He has got to start catching some of those balls. Nate Washington is a bigger loss than most people think, so Sweed's play will be really important.
Harrison, Woodley, Farrior and Timmons. What a linebacking corps! I just hope the D-line can stay healthy. Don't know if Ziggy will be ready to be a 2-gapper DE in a 3-4 this year

Dude, just like every other sports writer you totally missed Stefan "Joystick" Logan via the CFL. I will bet you $100 he gets his share of third downs as well as punt and kickoff returns let alone simply make the Steelers' roster. Wally Buono, coach and the general manager of the B.C. Lions called Kirby Wilson, Pittsburgh Steelers Running Backs Coach, to see if Logan was available to return to his CFL duties. Kirby said the B.C. Lions should move on and not expect Stefan any time soon. Logan is competing for a spot as a returner and "third down pass in the flats RB," and has impressed the Steelers organization with agility similar to Darren Sproles. And don't give Stefan and me any gas about him being too small. I will gladly send to you my list of some 50-60 players who were on NFL teams' rosters last year within a gnat's eyelash of the height and/or weight of Logan. Check this Dude out. Be the first sports writer to brake from the lumbering herd and show some real insight.

The Steelers are the default NFL Champion...guess who is back? Tom Brady and the Patriots. The Steelers can enjoy their year because the Pats will take it to all the teams this year. Randy Moss and Wes Welker are still going very strong. And the Pats have Darius Butler and Joey Galloway now. Big Ben's time is up!

RighttoSpeak, you are absolutely correct. No other team in the NFL is preparing for the 09 season since the Patriots are going to go undefeated and win it all. The Steelers have NO CHANCE against the Patriots, since it is a foregone conclusion that: 1) Brady will return 100%, 2) all of the old players (including Moss, Taylor, Springs, Galloway, et. al.) will remain healthy and strong through the full season, 3) a middling defense will magically improve despite little added at the critical LB spot, and 4) the tougher schedule faced this year (vs. the prior two) will have no impact on a team obviously superior to all others in the league. I am a lifelong Steelers fan, but I'm burning all of my Black & Gold stuff since it is hopeless to root for such a scrub team when the deified Patriots continue to shine, as they will forever...

RighttoSpeak.....after reading your post it took me almost 10 minutes to respond cause I was laughing so hard and had tears in my eyes! I would put any amount of money that your Patriots dont even make the play-offs this year. Jets and/or Dolphins are going to be representing your division in 09. When Brady gets bodies falling around his legs you watch and see how back he is! He is going to change the way he plays QB and makes mistakes! I want the beloved Steelers to win every year.....In saying that this year has more of a meaning cause that will give the Black and Gold 3 for this decade....tying with the Patriots and they didnt have to cheat to get their rings!!!!!

Anyone who thinks that Tom Brady is going to be back to his old form after last year's injury might want to consult with Carson Palmer about how long it takes to fully come back from an injury like that. Let's see how he responds to having to scramble to avoid the rush or getting hit a few times. Besides, just like we'll be hard pressed to duplicate last year's amazing season on defense, the Patriots will be hard pressed to duplicate that magical '07 season on offense. Besides, what happened to that Offensive Juggernaut in the Super Bowl that year? Did they even win that game?

For one thing righttospeak . they could not when the superbowl with Tom Brady and being two years younger and being undefeated in the regular season. So now your saying that with age and the loss of a linebacker that played 85% of your defensive plays your going to be better. Thats awsome! keep living that delusional life your living because in your world detroit will be facing th patriots in the superbowl. May i suggest you take some medication and start cheering for a team that does'nt have to cheat to win their titles.
