Shutdown Corner - NFL

Late in the New York Jets' mud-stomping of the Raiders yesterday, CBS cameras caught Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez(notes) on the bench, trying not to be noticed while eating a hot dog. Mustard packet in his right hand, hot dog in his left, Sanchez tried very hard to keep his mid-game dining a secret. No dice, though. (Click on the photo at right to see the video.)

Sanchez -- as he explains in the video below -- had been ill and unable to eat much in the week leading up to the game. To my knowledge, no one chastised him for having the snack -- not yesterday when it happened, and not today in the media -- but he still apologized immediately. I think his biggest concern was probably the perception that he was showing up the Raiders; making the statement that, "Hey, beating the Raiders is so easy that I can do it while scarfing down some delicious wieners." He obviously wants nothing to do with that kind of image.

I would doubt that any chastising would come from his head coach. Since taking the job, Rex Ryan hasn't been afraid to trash talk anyone. If anything, Ryan would have probably rather seen Sanchez eat the hot dog while standing in the pocket, the Raiders pass rush making a futile effort to get near him.

Whether it was necessary or not, here was Sanchez's postgame apology:

I'm glad Sanchez got to enjoy the California sunshine and eat a hot dog too. Now he just has to learn how to play\throw the ball in tough EAST coast weather conditions(wind\rain\snow). With games left in Buffalo and New England he better learn fast....

ROFL. I bet Rex Ryan did want that, but Sanchez decided not to.
I don't see what all the hoopla is about. If the dude feels sick and thinks putting something in his stomach will help, then by all means, eat a hot dog. Whats the big deal?

Keven...it is seen as a sign as a disrespect eating hot dog on the sidelines. Of course the way the Raiders play they are disrespecting their FANS!

Yeah Mallard,it ain't a dog without the Kraut! What a loser thinking he can get away with that. How about Bill Callahan geting the gatorade bath? THAT was the ultimate insult. At least we got to see a backup QB this week, and it was nice that someone paid off the Jet's secondary so Heyward-Bey could make a couple of catches. in a post game interview Russell still doesn't think it's on him? what a tool ! Yeah, like I'd let someone with a mowhawk hairdo and ski cap (in 60 degree plus weather no less) lead me anywhere either. . 42 years of devoted fandom has led to this? If it wasn't so sickening it would be comical!

Wonder if the NFL (no fun league) will have something to say about Sanchez eating a hot dog. This isn't a story... the story is about how Russell has failed to mature into an NFL QB, and how you have to seriously wonder about the Raiders draft thinking when you consider that their last 3 #1 picks are Russell, McFadden, and Heyward-Bey.
Crabtree caught 5 balls yesterday in his first game, which gives him more receptions than Heyward-Bey, who's played th whole season. Book's still out on McFadden, and Russell is a genuine no doubt about it bust.
What are the Raiders (Mr. Davis) really looking for in the draft? Potential, or someone who can actually HELP your team as a football player?

As much as the media have tried to make of it, there's nothing there. He was already pulled for the day and there were something like four minutes left on the clock. The haters are always trying to stir up controversy where there is none.
