Shutdown Corner - NFL

There are hundreds of insults you could lob toward Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder (literally), but this may be the worst: Things have gotten so bad this year that some of the team's fans will be rooting against the 'Skins in tonight's Monday Night home game against the Philadelphia Eagles. It doesn't get much worse than that.

The thinking is that if the Redskins win after a week in which he stripped Jim Zorn of playcalling duties and handed them to a guy who joined the team three weeks ago, it will only embolden Snyder. He's always had a "me against the world" attitude, so a victory could further that refrain. You can picture him squawking to Vinny Cerrato about it tomorrow: "You see? YOU SEE?! We won! We know what we're doing. Not the Washington Post, or ESPN, or those snotty fans. We do! Our plan worked! (Chest bumps Cerrato, knocking over the replica Super Bowl trophy on his desk.) Now, get me Don Coryell's number and start scouting college wide receivers, STAT!"

To some fans, the idea of ever rooting against your team seems sacrilegious. To others, a pragmatic approach could provide certain situations when doing so might be appropriate. For instance, if your squad is fighting for the No. 1 draft pick it makes sense to pull for a late-season loss to ensure that you get a can't-miss prospect like JaMarcus Russell(notes). (Or something like that.)

Doing this doesn't mean you actually have to cheer against your team though. The 'Skins fans who'd rather teach Snyder a lesson tonight won't be wearing Donovan McNabb(notes) jerseys and clapping when Laron Landry(notes) extends an Eagles drive with a 15-yard personal foul. It will be more of an apathy kind of thing.

I polled 10 of the biggest Redskins fans I know this weekend to see what their feelings were about tonight's game. Three responded that they'd be rooting for the 'Skins as much as usual. Five said they wanted a win but had to qualify their remarks with things like "but I really don't care" or "only because it's against an NFC East team". The remaining two people said that, while it pained them, they'd prefer the Redskins to lose. (And these are ten huge fans, mind you.)

As a 'Skins fan myself, I don't know where I stand. It's complicated. I had zero desire to go to the game tonight, mainly because I hope and anticipate FedEx Field being empty and filled with Eagles fans. Not going is my little protest. The best way to get at Snyder isn't on the field, but in the wallet. An empty stadium stands a better chance of getting his attention than another pathetic effort.

I never want my favorite team to lose, but I also certainly wont be upset when if they do. Best case scenario, I guess, is that the defense scores some points, the offense is embarrassed enough that Snyder realizes he's an idiot and Marty McFly drives the Delorean back to 1999 and makes it so Jack Kent Cooke's son buys the team.

Is it ever acceptable to root against your favorite team?

I'm a Skins fan, have been 25 years or so. I do NOT want them to lose. (I want Snyder to gain some humility and let someone knowledgeable run the club which, by the way, is less likely than winning out the rest of the season.) I understand the frustration and anger, but I'm through that phase. I'm to acceptance. I'm going to sit back and watch the train wreck as dispassionately as I watch the Raiders do their own kind of amazingly bad things. Yup, my team: East Oakland Redskins.

I'd never root against my Skins. but I will root to get a new Owner and GM... I'm a Skins fan for life and I'd ride or die with them.. We have a pretty decent team actually. Just no coaches to get in the players faces and get there a$$es in check. Geeezz !!! Albert Get your 100 million fat A$$ off the ground every single game. it's kinda embarrassing. we should of purchased 4 decent lineman at 25 mill each . that would do wonders for our struggling offense. !! GO skins.. please beat Philly. I would be happy

I'm a real member of the '64 and Counting Club. Even though I have lived in Chicago for the last 30 years and am now a Bears fan; I can't let the Browns go. I remember listening to the '64 championship Game on the radio with my brother and mother(it wasn't sold out on time; so it was blacked out locally, thanks Art). I'm hoping they lose all remaining games so that they can get rid of Mangini. Hopefully, they can turn the team over to Marty Schottenheimer and bring respect back to the Browns.

I would never bring myself to root against my favorite team, I'm just not wired that way.
Dan Synder runs the Redskins like the Mel Brooks play "The Producers"
He knows you don't need a quality product to make money, you just need an audience. Snyder makes the Yorks look like geniuses, and that is a rather difficult task to accomplish.

I'm an eagles fan and I'm rooting against them. I'm so sick of Candy Reid and Donowoman McFlabb that I hope this whole year goes down the tubes so they don't re-up the coach's contract. Pennsylvanians like smash mouth football not this west coast offense crap. 10 years of this BS has been unbearable. GO PHILLIES!!!! GO REDSKINS!!!!

My comment is more to do with the statement of leaving the stadium empty. I don't think the owner will learn unless people actually give up their season tickets. How many of us are going to do that? Selling our tickets to someone else doesn't help the cause.

Jesus H. Christ on rubber crutches, you act like who you root for is going to completely undermine your self esteem. If you rely on a sports team that much to define you as a person, you need some professional help.

You're an idiot! True fans would not root against their team ESPECIALLY against Philly! GO SKINS! Start winning so these bloggers will stop piling on! Fans know that the front office has made ill advised decisions; however, the PLAYERS have got to start scoring some points.

Yes, in the same way it's ok to root for Obama to fail or your own body's cells to die (in the case that those cells are cancerous). If the problem is internal, you have to correct it there first.

Makes sense to me. As a Panther's fan, I'm contemplating rooting for Jake Delhomme to throw as many interceptions as possible. It seems like the only way the front office will get it through their thick skulls that we need a new quarterback.

The Redskins and the Browns are doomed until the owners take a look at the Miami model. They hired Bill Parcells to run their team. Until the Browns and the'Skins get some one who can flesh a team out. Parcells gets good second team and special teams players. Maybe you need a young guy to coach but an old guy who knows how to construct a team from the bottom up; not just flashing free agents but the last guy on the bench. Holmgren wants to function in that capacity for the Seahawks.
I can't imagine Snyder using the Miami model. So I think as long as he owns them they're sunk. Maybe the Lerner's will stop with the Belichek assistants and turn the team over to Marty, GM and Coach, but nothing less than GM. Until they use the Miami model both teams are doomed.

First of all it is ok to root against a favorite team but hurt them in the pocket books and don't go to games. Don't buy memorabilia either. But to fengswent. Save it the Eagles have won more in the past 10 years than they had in any 10 year span before. True they may not have won a Super Bowl. Well many teams haven't. You are not entitled.

What we need is a real GM (not a brown -noser), who can start rebuilding the team. Gibbs was fine as a coach, but (aside from the fact that Gibbs does not want the job) there is another former Redskin and DC resident who can fit the need. I say Snyder should admit he was wrong in in 1999 and hire Charlie Casserly back. He made a lot of good draft picks (Heath Shuler was a horrid aberation), he knows how to manage an NFL organization, and he could focus on the team instead ahead of Dannie-Boy's feelings.

#6, I don't understand that kind of thinking. I know a lot of Eagles fans feel that way and I just don't understand it.
Andy Reid....ok maybe I can see your point there. He's not a great coach, but he's a better coach than a lot of others.
Donovan McNabb though.....what? He's the best QB the Eagles have ever had and you want him run out of town? I just don't get that.

Like some of the other fans you mentioned, I am a HUUUUGE Redskins fan and yet am apathetic about this game and this season.
I'll always root for them to win, but the more public embarrassment Snyder endures, the better. Maybe one day he'll break out of his little bubble and actually run the team like a professional franchise.

Guess their isnt as many true redskins fans anymore like myself
I would absolutly never root for my team to lose (even if it meant I would win money)
I don't waste time rooting or whining for new ownership or GM either
It is what it is, its my team and I will stick with them no matter what just like I do
    my Tennessee Volunteers in college
These same fans whining now would be the first to speak up and say oh I love my team
and knew they could do it if they suddenly went on a huge win streak and made it to the playoffs
Get with the picture people and cheer the skins no matter what and stop making us true fans look like

    YGM,
    You must be pretty young.
To the rest of you guys, what the hell does coaching have to do with it. Sports is the only occupation where people will blame someone else when you suck at your job. Yes there will be times when personel and strategy don't mix, but everyone seems to balme coaches and GMs now days for everything. I personally have never seen a coach or GM fumble, throw and INT into double coverage, or make a game saveing tackle. Stop blaming management and start blaming the people who play the game.

I'm rooting for the switch in offensive play calling to totally fail and for the Redskins to win on special teams and defense, leaving Vinny Cerrato and Dan Snyder no place to hide.
I'm talking things like kickoffs, punts or interceptions run back for touchdowns. Maybe a safety. Or the defense or special teams set up the offense with first goal at the 6 and a personal foul on 4th down gives the offense a second set of downs starting at the 1 or 2, from which point even Washington can score a TD on 4 tries.
Win or lose I want it to play out so there is no way for any body to say that the offensive change worked.

What the hell kind of skins fans out there would root on a rival???? This is freakin sick guys!! The hogs, Gibbs, The Posse, and everyone else that makes the history of our franchise so rich didn't do it all for you fans to get fickle and turn on them like Julius Cesar and [profane]! I would have to be staring at my exposed dying organs before i would ever root on rival teams like Pheagles or the Vagina Cavaliers!!
