Shutdown Corner - NFL

Remember the plucky little pigeon who lined up and played special teams with the Raiders against the Eagles?

And do you remember Marquis Cooper(notes), the Raiders linebacker who tragically died along with two others in a boating accident back in March?

Raiders running back Justin Fargas(notes) believes they are one and the same. Fargas was asked on KHTK in San Francisco about the pigeon, and about how some teammates and Cooper's mother believe that the pigeon was Marquis.

"It definitely is. It kind of gives you a different perspective on things. Yeah it was definitely a strange event seeing that bird flying out there. It seemed comfortable on the football field and comfortable lying down there literally on special teams. It very well could have been Marquis."

You can listen to the interview here.

What a heartwarming little thought. Teammate Cornell Green even pointed out that that was the position Marquis would have played. If that was you, Marquis, thanks for stopping by. I'm glad you got to see a Raiders win.

Gracias, Sports Radio Interviews.

Could be. The pigeon STAYED in its lane when they kicked it off and everything. Pretty cool.

Thank you, what a heart warming story. I'd like to think it is true and who can say it isn't true?

While I'm pretty sure it's not really Marquis Cooper, it's a nice thought. And hey, if the pigeon helps the Raiders remember their teammate fondly, I'm all for it.

Well I don't think it was Marquis, it's possible that the bird was sent by him to show the Raiders and his family that everything is fine where he's at and how he still part of the team.

I guess this is what I have to look forward to with my Redskins as they sink ever toward football futility. On the plus side, maybe Sean Taylor will shore up our woeful secondary - come back as a bull or something.
