Watch: QMJHL goalie scores short-handed goal
Etienne Montpetit joined a special fraternity of goaltenders on Saturday night.
With his team on the penalty kill and the opposing goalie on the bench, the Val d’Or netminder collected the puck behind his net and fired it down the ice and into the open cage for his first career goal.

Montpetit is the first goalie to score a goal in the QMJHL since Cape Breton’s Francois Brassard accomplished the feat in 2014-15, when he did it twice. And while official numbers are hard to come by, Montpetit doesn’t have much company in the QMJHL with only four other goalies since 2005 reaching the goal column.
For context, nine goalies have combined to score 11 goals in NHL history with only seven of those by way of the Hail Mary shot, the last coming in 2013 off the stick of Mike Smith. It has happened a little more frequently of late in major junior, as Stuart Skinner of the Lethbridge Hurricanes and London Knights’ Tyler Parsons both tickled the twine last season.
