Soccer league for newcomers launched

A Charlottetown soccer coach has started a soccer league for young immigrants and refugees.

Mike Redmond told CBC News newcomers to P.E.I. often have trouble with limited access to transportation and high costs. This has left many of them without a place to play.

"Soccer … transcends language, it transcends barriers and religion or ethical divides. Once you put a ball in the middle of a field everything else is forgotten and you just go play," said Redmond.

"I think it has a special place in everybody's heart."

Redmond said the players only have to pay a toonie for each game.
