Penguins' Carl Hagelin suffered concussion on Alex Steen hit

Every other day it seems we’re talking about another member of the Pittsburgh Penguins dealing with an injury. Today, it’s Carl Hagelin, who was diagnosed with a concussion after leaving Saturday’s game in the first period.

Hagelin took a hit from Alex Steen of the St. Louis Blues and didn’t return to see the rest of the Penguins’ 4-1 victory. According to head coach Mike Sullivan, the forward skated on his own Monday morning before the rest of his teammates hit the ice for practice.

Currently, there’s no timetable for Hagelin’s return. The Penguins want to see how his body responds after Monday’s skate.

As the Penguins lose another player, they’re close to getting back Evgeni Malkin, who’s been out almost two weeks with a lower-body injury. He participated in practice on Monday wearing a non-contact jersey and won’t play Tuesday against the Calgary Flames. Sullivan said that they were “very encouraged” by what they saw and the next step will be a contact skate.

“Today was a step forward skating with the team,” said Malkin via the Penguins website. “I’m feeling good. I’m taking it day-by-day.”

The Penguins are near the bottom of NHL teams in terms of man-games lost to injury, but they’ve managed to overcome not having key pieces of their lineup — Malkin, Kris Letang, Sidney Crosby, Brian Dumoulin Matt Cullen, and now Connor Sheary and Hagelin — to remain comfortably in a playoff spot and in a position to challenge for the Eastern Conference crown.
