Passenger dies after sports car crashes into pond

One man is dead and another is facing a charge of impaired driving following the crash of a Ford Mustang into a pond near the Sweet Grass First Nation, RCMP say.

The crash happened Thursday around 9:15 p.m. CST on Highway 40, about 30 kilometres west of North Battleford, Sask.

A police officer was on the scene quickly and found a passenger was trapped in the sports car which was submerged in a pond.

"The officer then dove into the water attempting to free the occupant," police said in a news release about the crash, noting the water was about three-metres deep.

The officer used a knife to cut the seat belt and pull the man out of the water. The Mountie also performed CPR on the injured man until other emergency personnel arrived to provide assistance.

However, the passenger, a 26-year-old man from the Poundmaker First Nation, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the driver, a 29-year-old man also from the Poundmaker reserve, was OK.

He is facing several charges, including impaired driving causing death.

North Battleford is about 135 kilometres northwest of Saskatoon.
