NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) -- Oracle Racing skipper Jimmy Spithill has clinched the inaugural America's Cup World Series season championship.
Spithill took second place in both the match racing and fleet racing in the sixth and final regatta of the season, which ended Sunday.
Spithill also claimed the overall season fleet racing championship, while Sweden's Artemis Racing won the inaugural season's match racing championship.
Spithill skippered Oracle Racing to victory in the 2010 America's Cup off Valencia, Spain.
Spithill scored 102 points in six regattas, followed by Emirates Team New Zealand with 93, Artemis Racing 82, France's Energy Team 74, Oracle Racing-Coutts 68 and Team Korea 66 points. Rounding out the field were Luna Rossa Piranha, Luna Rossa Swordfish and China Team. Those teams didn't sail in all six regattas.
The 2012-13 ACWS season begins in August in San Francisco. The 34th America's Cup will be held in San Francisco in 2013.
