Lviv submits its bid to host 2022 Winter Olympics

KYIV, Ukraine - The Ukrainian city of Lviv has submitted its bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Deputy Prime Minister Oleksandr Vilkul said Thursday the bid was submitted to the International Olympic Committee.

The bid envisions about $10 billion in public and private investment to host the games. It will build upon infrastructure developed for last year's European football championship, including the stadium that hosted three matches.

Snow sports would take place in the Carpathian Mountains near the Romanian border, 180 kilometres (110 miles) to the south.

The proposed price tag is nearly twice that of Oslo's bid, at $5.3 billion the lowest contender.

Also in the race are Stockholm; Almaty, Kazakhstan; Beijing and Zhangjiakou; and a joint bid by Krakow, Poland, and Jasna, Slovakia.

The IOC will announce the official list of applicants on Friday. The host city will be selected in 2015.
