Jeff Skinner fakes out Thomas Greiss on penalty shot goal (Video)

Carolina Hurricanes forward Jeff Skinner scored a gorgeous penalty shot goal in his team’s Monday game against the New York Islanders.

At the 3:43 mark of the third period, Islanders defenseman Dennis Seidenberg hooked Skinner on a breakaway, which led to the penalty shot call. Skinner then stick-handled around goaltender Thomas Greiss on the ensuing attempt to put the Hurricanes up 7-4.

A review as to whether Greiss made contact with the puck prior to the goal was inconclusive, which meant the tally stood. The Hurricanes won the game 8-4.

“I came down and didn’t have a ton of speed. I just tried to wait to see what opened up,” Skinner said of his 23rd goal of the year. “He almost got his stick on it, but fortunately I was able to pull it to my backhand before he could.”

Meanwhile, the loss for the Islanders kept New York one point back of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the race for the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Maple Leafs have one game in hand on New York.

“We were just bad all over the ice, goaltenders included,” Islanders coach Doug Weight said. “There’s no hiding from this one, that’s for sure. Veterans looked tired. All the young guys looked pretty good, actually, they had some legs. Besides that, everybody was awful.”
