Jack Nicklaus gives Montreal Canadiens words of advice (Video)

The Montreal Canadiens received a motivational speech from a sports legend Tuesday before their game against the Boston Bruins.

Jack Nicklaus, who won 18 major golf championships, read out the starting lineup and gave some words of encouragement to the group. Nicklaus noted that he doesn’t know much about hockey, and had never been in a hockey locker room before, but said some of the same values he used as a golfer hold true to hockey.

“There’s no excuse for not being properly prepared, meaning you have to be ready to play, right? And the second thing I always try to do is never try to do anything I couldn’t do, meaning I always played within myself,” Nicklaus said. “Some of you can do some things, some of you can do other things and as long as I did that I was successful and I think that applies to any sport.”

Nicklaus, who is from Columbus, Ohio, took a small dig at his hometown Blue Jackets.

“So I wish you guys well. I’m from Columbus incidentally. That’s a bad deal right now, isn’t it? Forget that, I’ve only seen them play once,” he joked.

Nicklaus asked if he screwed up any names, but he pronounced them all correctly. The Canadiens beat the Bruins 3-2.

“It threw me off because he had his back to me,” Canadiens goaltender Carey Price told the Montreal Gazette. “I was doing my stuff and I looked and there was someone standing three feet in front of me. I was kind of awestruck and I don’t get awestruck very often.”
