OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Home plate umpire Bill Miller has left Wednesday's game between the Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Angels five innings after being hit in the facemask by a pitch from Zack Greinke.
Miller had just signaled Oakland's Brandon Moss out on a called third strike in the sixth inning when he abruptly turned and left the field.
Second base umpire Dan Iassonga replaced Miller behind the plate.
The game was halted briefly in the bottom of the first when a pitch from Greinke sailed over the glove of Angels catcher Chris Iannetta and hit Miller squarely in the facemask. Miller took a brief break and was examined by a member of the A's medical staff before play was resumed.
