Borussia Dortmund has confirmed that Neven Subotic has suffered a hamstring tear and could miss out on first-team action for up to six weeks while in recovery.
The Serbian and former U.S. youth international stopper pulled up with a knock in training on Saturday, and an MRI scan conducted at a hospital in La Manga confirmed the extent of the damage on Tuesday.
Felipe Santana is the most likely candidate to fill the Subotic's place in the heart of BVB's defense. Subotic is most likely to miss out on his side's first competitive fixture of the new year, a Bundesliga clash versus Werder Bremen at the Weserstadion on Jan. 19. If Subotic must miss the full six weeks, then he would miss out on Dortmund's UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first-leg bout against Shakhtar Donetsk in addition to five league games.
Just two days ago, Subotic signed an extension with Dortmund through 2016.
