The Colorado Rapids announced the acquisition of Ecuador international defender Diego Calderon on Thursday. The 26-year-old joins from Liga de Quito in his native country, with whom he won three league titles, the 2008 Copa Libertadores, the 2009 Copa Sudamericana, and the 2009 and 2010 Recopa Sudamericana trophies. Calderon came through at hometown La Liga from the youth side in 2005, and went to make over 250 appearances in all competitions. He made his Eduador national team debut in 2005.
"Diego is a versatile, talented defender who will come in and compete for a spot in our back line," Rapids technical director Paul Bravo said. "He can play in the middle or on the left, and has extensive experience, having won league and continental titles and been a part of his national team throughout World Cup qualifying. We’re excited to bring him into the group."
Calderon has been a part of the match-day roster for each of his team’s nine World Cup Qualifying matches so far.
