Cam Talbot allowed a soft goal from center ice in his team’s Sunday game against the Buffalo Sabres.

The shot came from Sabres forward Ryan O’Reilly at the 3:53 mark of the second period. The puck was bouncing, which may have confused Talbot to a degree, but overall such a play is tough to excuse. Judging by the video, he just whiffed on it.

The goal was the second for O’Reilly on the season. Coming into the game, Talbot had allowed seven goals in two contests, though the Oilers had won both of those.

Earlier in the game, Talbot made a big save on a 3-on-1 to keep his team in the contest at that moment.

Even though he has gotten off to a rough start this year, Talbot was one of the Oilers’ defensive bright spots from last season when he held a 2.55 goal-against average and .917 save percentage in 56 games played. Edmonton gave him a three-year, $12.5 million contract extension as a reward.

The Sabres won 6-2 which meant Talbot has allowed 13 goals in two-plus games so far this year. Talbot was yanked after the fourth goal against him but returned after backup Jonas Gustavsson left with an injury.
