Former Strikeforce/Dream/K-1 heavyweight champion, Alistair Overeem, has kept his eye on current light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones' progression, and he feels it's only a matter of time before they square up inside the Octagon.
Overeem -- who also started off his MMA career as a light-heavyweight -- feels Jones won't be able to make the cut to 205 pounds for much longer.
"He will end up in the heavyweight [division] because he has the frame." Overeem said during a conversation with MMAInterviews.tv. "That's just a matter of time and I'm definitely looking forward to fighting him. … I'm already very excited about the prospect of fighting someone like him. He's dominant in the light-heavyweight division. For me, I like challenges. That's where my biggest, greatest, and unexpected wins came from. I'm definitely looking forward to fighting Jon Jones."
Jones has already indicated his desire to move up to the heavyweight division on numerous occasions, so it's not surprising Overeem expects him to eventually make the jump.
Overeem was just as lanky as Jones earlier in his career, but the Dutchman transformed his body when he moved up to the heavyweight division. He morphed into one of the most imposing physical specimens in MMA, attributing his gains to his "horse meat" diet.
Who knows, maybe Jones will get bulking-up advice from "The Reem."
After destroying Brock Lesnar in his UFC debut, Alistair was set to challenge Junior dos Santos for the heavyweight strap at UFC 146, but their fight was cancelled when he ended up failing a surprise drug test. Overeem's sample indicated elevated testosterone levels; something many hardcore MMA fans always presumed was a staple of his diet.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission punished Overeem by denying his MMA license application for a nine-month period. Alistair will be able to apply for another license in December.
Overeem remains the number one contender in the Ultimate Fighting Championship's heavyweight division, and he'll get to fight the winner of the dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez UFC 155 matchup.
Alistair expects Velasquez to emerge victorious.
