Wednesday is Hockey Fights Cancer night at Wells Fargo Center as the Philadelphia Flyers host the Detroit Red Wings. Fans in attendance received lavender shirts upon entry, and players and staff members filled out “I Fight For” signs with names of loved ones who have battled the disease.

The night was also a special one for play-by-play man Mike Emrick, who was broadcasting the game for NBCSN. Back in 1991, he underwent a radical prostatectomy after a prostate cancer diagnosis, and after a two-week hospital stay was in the clear.

Before Wednesday’s Red Wings-Flyers game, Emrick recalled his battle:

Here’s an extended version of Emrick’s story from 2014 for Ed Randall’s Fans for the Cure:

The Flyers were the 14th NHL team to hold a Hockey Fights Cancer night this month. The initiative began in 1998 and according to the league has raised more than $16 million to support the cancer programs of national and local cancer research institutions, children’s hospitals, player charities and local charities.
