      <description> &lt;p&gt;&lt;p&gt;South Carolina's merry-go-round at quarterback may finally have stopped.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Sophomore Chris Smelley asserted his claim in a big way Saturday, leading the Gamecocks to a desperately-needed SEC win at Ole Miss. In the 31-24 victory, Smelley displayed arm strength, elusiveness and good decision-making.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In short, he did most of the things coach Steve Spurrier was looking for.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;"He made some good throws, and he missed some guys, too," Spurrier said. "I still think Chris can really play. I really think he can play. I expect him to play better. I think he can play better than this, I really do."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Smelley didn't find out he was starting until Thursday. He proceeded to throw for 327 yards, with three touchdowns and one interception.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Now the Gamecocks (4-2, 1-2) head...</description>
