In the 31-24 victory, Smelley displayed arm strength, elusiveness and good decision-making.</p> <p>In short, he did most of the things coach Steve Spurrier was looking for.</p> <p>"He made some good throws, and he missed some guys, too," Spurrier said. "I still think Chris can really play. I really think he can play. I expect him to play better. I think he can play better than this, I really do."</p> <p>Smelley didn't find out he was starting until Thursday. Stephen Garcia was 13-for-20 for 131 yards and ran for 86 more in the first significant action of his career, giving South Carolina's offense enough of a kick to beat UAB 26-13 on Saturday night. Garcia, a heralded recruit who has had a hard time staying out of trouble off the field during his two years at South Carolina, came in on the second possession for the Gamecocks (3-2).
